cool, just saying i am only 20 :), but you know the new lp players like 1980 ones are they the next thing up from this?, just i love lp;s i own a pl-200x pioneer turntable my dad gave me and i just wanted to know :)
@rondahl18 If you are referring to LP's or 45 RPM records, the answer is NO, you would destroy these records by playing them on this early Talking Machine. These early machines were designed to play 78RPM records that were made from a combination of Shellac and powdered slate, and designed to play with a Steel Needle, which you were told to change after every record. The invention of the LP and 45 records was still some 30+ years away ! Hope this answers your question.
I bought my first portable mechanical gramophone and have feeling it plays better that electric record players from 50's or 60's. What do you think about it?
Where can I buy a gramophone like this? I don't want a vintage, super-expensive gramophone. I just want a beautiful unit (like this) that plays and sounds well. Anybody know please reply. Also does it play 7 inch vinyls?
@CubeableGame gramophones are expensive but you see some on ebay, most are reproductions. I reckon this one cost a lot too.
12" and 7" vinyls can't be used on gramophones as the modern records from the 60s-today run at 33 or 45 RPM as opposed to gramophone records that run at 78 RMP speed. Don't try and use them on these old machines not only because of the speed issue but also the tone arm and needle are to big and heavy and will destroy the fine grooves of modern records.
Thank you for the information. As for the Ebay, I live in Greece and not everyone is willing to send their items here. I'm just searching for a good reproduction gramophone and a few records (some ragtime and jazz mainly) to play.

This is one of my favorites that I do not have on shellac. Thank You for posting it! I have featured you on a Not My Victrola spot on True Blue Sam. Keep up the good work!
Thanks David, It is an honor to have this fantastic early Al Jolson classic as your weekend special on "True Blue Sam". I will do my best to put other great early shellac 78rpms on youtube that you can enjoy. Have you checked out my latest "Nat M. Wills" entry? Very bizarre but extremely entertaining.
Thank you for the comment. Yes, what a great song and title, and than Jolson singing it as well. It has so much going for it. The record is still out there and turns up occasionally on ebay, so keep watch, you might get lucky. Thanks again.
