hi is talking about phenom as even the spider platform has been test to be way under qx series cpu's. I was looking at phenom but after all poor reviews im leaving it but if someone can convince me otherwise please post your findings thanks. oh why does the modder not use laser milling is so dirty, messy
Ok about a week ago i put together my new system using the following : AMDPhenom9600 2.30GHz , GIGABYTE® "6 Quad" 790FX+SB600 Chipset ,4GB Transcend DDR2 1066 , 4X Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD3870 512MB.... for testing purposes i 1st only installed 2 GFX cards to test against my boss's "on par" intel/nvidia based machine. And even though th intel performed slightly better in most tests (hammering my AMD in some) it doesnt justify the huge price difference... Bang for your buck? then AMD still rules
what case did u use for the pc?does a regular one work?and also did 4 3870's fit on the 790fx?it seemed to me like it couldn't fit 4 dual slot video cards(planning on making a spider platform and in need for answers)
I used the Thermaltake Armor+, and no... dual slot cards doesn't fit on the board. I replaced the stock cooling with gigabyte blue eye watercooling parts.
You benchmarked a machine with 2 3870 cards ($350) and a ($200) quad core to an intel machine that had a 'huge price difference' and it was 'on par'?
Well your boss must have an overpriced 'XPS' system because $200 can get you a q6600/E8400 with change, and $350 will easily get you a G92 8800GTS with 50 dollars change. Both of which will not only out perform your system, but will have lower power consumption and heat as well. FYI, for a 3870 to match a 8800GTS (G92) you must OC it to 1ghz core
By 'on par' i meant , the intel/nvidia parts that my hardware would be compared with in reviews and benchmarks. I also made it clear that his system out performed mine in almost all tests. And at the time there was a R1800 price difference here in SA (around $225). i will also add that im dissapointed in the 4 card performance , which just isnt worth the xtra money. Stick with 2 cards 4 now ppl.
neowindotnet, Why would anybody want a Multi Chip Module (Intel) when they can have a true quad core processor from AMD? Intel has been regurgitating the 8086 for 31 years! (since 1977)
Does it really matter how its made? Intel chips run cooler, (E8200 consumes 2.5 watts on idle) performs better, and have no quad-core overclocking problems.
I agree! Remember when Apple made he switch to Intel CPU's? A lot of people said that the G5 and G4 processors have the better architecture compared to Intel's lineup but Intel still performed much better and that's what matters!
thats a pretty amazing green spec for a desktop chip! I aslo saw it on Xbitlabs , BUT how do we know thats an accurate wattage spec, what if its embellished low wattage data just so that intel sells the chip more... ?
review sites give lots of inconsistent reviews at times, ive seen the E6300 rated @ 25w idle on xbitlabs then i saw it rated at 13w idle on toms hardware, and lets face it who pays these people to rate pc products all day long? the product markers themselves! u think theyd do it 4 free!? heh
i just cheked the intel site for thermal specs and the E8200 is rated at 65 watts and will do 8 watts in extended halt mode, and thats it! smaller forms factor does not absolutely determine efficient wattage, old pentium 2s and 3s are not small form and consume under 15 watts. xbitlabs tests results were probably done while they were smoking crack or somehing.
And with a server with about 20 players, as soon as I really see action I start pulling 30 - 50 FPS, To some people that's not a problem or much to windge about, but with the money I spent on the system, It should do 200FPS on max res. Not happy, I am going for a e8400/e8500, Great overclocking abilities, and great FSB and core cache. Quad cores are damn usuless from Intel and AMD simply because no games and programs are utilized for 4 cores, simple, Same goes with SLi, particularily 4 cards...
All I hear is AM2 socket; witch the Phenom is on, has a slow FSB, therefor can't utilize newer games. I am running an AMD 5600+ It's sucks, well I thinks so, the rest of my specs. are decent, it all points to my CPU, I am told to buy new CPU & motherboard.
If you are on XP and are having troubles running games, you need to install the AMD dual core optimizer, and also the microsoft AMD dual core hot fix if you are on XP.
I personally am still running an S939 Athlon64 4200+ X2 with 2gb of DDR400 RAM, and an 8800GTX 768mb video card, and I am able to run all the latest games at maximum detail with no slowdowns at all..
You've done something wrong with your system. You mention all the "upgrades" you've done, but it still holds to reason that MANY people out there have achieved perfectly smooth operation on CS:S with far lower specs. A 4600+ AM2 (2.4Ghz stock), 1GB Corsair DDR2-800 RAM and a 256MB 7600GT got me running CS:Source on mid-high settings smooth as butter. You've messed up somewhere, and it's not your CPU (assuming you're telling the truth).
AMD Quad-cores, I hear nothing but negative talk about them, Apparently the front-side-bus witch the Phenoms run on (2000mhz) is too slow to utilize games, compared to Intel. I am running an AMD 5600+ (dual-core), 4GB DD2 RAM @800MHz, 8800GTS (640mb), and still get lag on simpler and oler games such as Counter-Strike: Source. I need to put the resolution down, remove AA/AF aliasing, to recieve a decent FPS (atleast smooth) I have removed every thing generic in my PC, yet still have problems..
I hear nothing but bad stuff about the Phenom CPUs, apparently they can't utilize the newer games out, due to the slower front side bus rates... That's to do with the AM2 socket thought right? I am running a Dual Core AMD 5600+. I still lag badly on basic games such as Counter-Striek Source online. I am running an nVidia 8800GTS (640mb) and have to put AA/AF on 0 to get a smooth/stable FPS, Also lower my resolution.
My point is, I would've guessed for this "super PC" a Intel Quad...
sykisK, I seriously doubt you have that kind of equipment in your rig unless you've horribly mucked it up somehow. My older system ran CS:S perfectly (high settings) with an AM2 4600+ X2, 1GB or Corsair XMS2 RAM and a 256MB 7600GT. That being said, you're either lying through your teeth and you're just an Intel fanboy hating on AMD, or something is terribly wrong with your system. BTW, the FSB (HT) on the Spider platform is 3600Mhz (AM2+), not 2000Mhz (AM2).
I have always been into the AMD CPUs, but now the truth is undeniable, Intel just smashes AMD, (at this point) Quad cores are damn useless and AM2 has no CPU out with more then 1MB chache on eatch core. For the newer games you need more, simply can't cut it.
Yes I do have a AMD 5600+ Good for Windows XP use, but for the games, usless, I run CSS on a 22" ASUS LCD monitor, and I have to take AA/AF off and drop the res to 1440x900 to get any smooth movements.
sykisK...I've sold systems with specs that are FAR LOWER than the ones you describe inside your rig and they averaged 70+ fps on CS:S.
You've done something wrong...deal with it...it's not your CPU.
Read over the specs of my old system. That one blew away the performance you're posting with your current hardware, but it uses sub-par components. Therefore, the only conclusion is that you've got bad drivers, bad power management, or you don't actually have that system.
Dont mess up the case it's awesome enough as it is!!!!
I know it won't change anything, too bad it looks great the way it came. And over clocking individual cores inside windows> thats too cool. I wish I didn't have to wait a year
Fan Grills will be arriving this week. Dave had also asked that he was contacted in advance before they were cut so he could record it for our next video installment. They neglected to do that, but Dave working on something else to share

Totally digging your guys work, the combination of design, engineering, execution and presentation is A grade. Except maybe broomstick cam, not sure if I liked that ;-) The bike was effn awesome, bring that attribute to case design will only raise the bar, top stuff!
There's no AM2 Phenoms. The Phenom 64 is compatible with AM2 as long as the motherboard manufactors for the specific motherboard is launching BIOS to fully support Phenom, but without 790FX you won't be able to kick up the HP3 or Overdrive along with better thermal condition on the 790FX and powersaving utilities. But this case looks interesting. Too bad the current Phenoms has a bug that makes it incapable of reaching 2,7ghz but the Black Edition will be awesome next month.
I think it could be a very good casemod, i just dont understand the whole motorcycle thing in the begining i feel like im watching a wannabe orange county video at that point but the rest was good. I have no idea why anyone would waste money on 4 video cards when even in crossfire or sli the performacve difference is pretty much a zero compared to a single or dual card setup and with the added heat in the system it would realy decrease the overall performace even if its all watercooled.
I recorded the bike, because people had asked to see Craig's CNC milling work. All of those parts were milled, including the rims on that same cnc mill. OCC doesn't machine their own bike parts.
In that case nice job on the bike and the pc, thanks for explaining it for me. When and what is the next mod going to be, not much info being updated on you guys website.

The only thing bad, that I can see, with the fan grill is the way it's designed.
The design looks great, but we always gotta go function/form.
Looks like a lot of air will be restricted mainly because of the parts between the holes.
Can't explain it but it seems a lot of the grill has a portion that will restrict airflow.
