Read the book "Cobb" by Al Stump. It's seriously the most comprehensive book ever written on Cobb. It's got everything. He killed a man once in 1912 who tried to mug him on the street, but pistol-whipping the man until there was nothing left of his face. He played later that day. Many found him to be charming, generous, and kind-hearted. He was especially generous of his time with children.

The Claude Lueker quotes are accurate (the fan that Cobb went after in the stands at Hilltop Park). Most of the others are fiction. The movie "Cobb" is very inaccurate. Tommy Lee Jones is terrible in it. By most accounts, Cobb was moody, but not a loud mouth like Jones presented. In mixed company, he was said to be even a little shy. Cobb was also very very smart. Jones portrays a buffoon. It's basically a continuation of the one-dimensional image that has persisted for over 70 years.

The story of Cobb's mother is speculative. A lot was never proved and there was a lot of rumor to muddy the waters. Cobb was also very generous in his later years and supported a number of ex-players who had hit on hard times (and did it anonymously), as well as setting up a college scholarship fund and founded a hospital in his home town. Many found him to be charming, generous, and kind-hearted. He was especially generous of his time with children.
Like everyone, he had many sides to him.

Well, a lot of the bad stuff is true, but a lot is not. Over the years, he's been painted as a monster without a single redeeming characteristic. Most of this is PC driven. I recently saw Ernie Harwell being interviewed by Bob Costas and the subject came around to Cobb. Harwell knew Cobb and described him as a true gentleman. He acknowledged the fact that Cobb did do a lot of the violent and nasty things, but also that Cobb wrote some kind, giving and even quite literary letters to people.

They are still wrong, Cobb may have been an addict of pain killers but that was in the late 50's till he died. He was prescribed pain meds because of the cancer in his back. so they only tell half the story in order to falsely influence their small sect of juvenile, unitelligent audience. and for those ppl this is their only form of info, it is their bible. how sad.

The Claude Lueker quotes are accurate (the fan that Cobb went after in the stands at Hilltop Park). Most of the others are fiction. The movie "Cobb" is very inaccurate. Tommy Lee Jones is terrible in it. By most accounts, Cobb was moody, but not a loud mouth like Jones presented. In mixed company, he was said to be even a little shy. Cobb was also very very smart. Jones portrays a buffoon. It's basically a continuation of the one-dimensional image that has persisted for over 70 years.

There are a few decent ones. I recommend "Ty Cobb" by Charles Alexander. Also, Cobb's autobiography: "My Life In Baseball: The True Record" is a window into the era that he played by the best source ever. A new one: "Ty and the Babe" is very good too. I'd start with the Alexander book.
