3% annual growth equals to doubling every 25 years, and growth to 10 times bigger in every 78 years, 100 times bigger in 156 years, 1000 times in 234 years etc.
One has to be either economist or completely lunatic to believe that this is possible for fossil fuel or any other consumption.
i don't think that the powers that be are worried about the public not handling this idea- i think it is the business community lacks a vision on how to deal with this existential crisis... how do we continue to grow the economy, maintain stability, avoid a crisis, and massive questioning of the foundations of the very system that our prosperity is based upon....as well as the ideological blind spots of the "techno utopia" that grips the upper crust of the technocrats running the world.
Too many Americans are "believers" not thinkers, that's why they are in denial about peak oil and even evolution in spite of the overwhelming evidence.
What is it about a "fossil" fuel they can't understand?
It seems most Americans are rather ignorant and stupid.
"oil prices did not increase four-fold over the last five years for any reason other than a shortage of supply"
I started reading about peak oil in 2005. It is happening, in slow motion so far, but it is happening. Yet everyone continues to suck at the tit of escapism like there's no tomorrow.
This is the best, most succinct low drama discussion of peak oil I've seen yet. If people don't find this credible, then as another commenter wrote they really do have their head stuck in the oil-depleted sand.
these are major authorities in the industry. this is probably the most important video for peak oil propagation made to date... people don't judge theories by the facts involved, they follow leaders.
Hard to believe in this internet age the vast ignornance out there. Thanksgiving dinner talking to engineer brother in law. He never heard of Peak Oil. He's an industrial engineer and has never heard of Peak Oil. Then my conclusion is this story already has and ending. A bad ending.
We live in a complex world. It´s easier to sit down and push play and close your eyes. I have a degree in physical geography yet all I know about entropy is that it is a song by Bad Religion..
Perhaps big oil doesn't "come out" because all hell would break loose; including vast investment in alternatives to oil and gas; the less time we have to adapt, the more valuable what remains will be.
Weve hit the peak oil iceberg, now things have slowed down and were in the boat trying to make sense of it all. Meanwhile the sedative media band is playing in hopes of the ship returning to its robust vigor. While all passengers mingle, the distinction of class becomes faded. And then theres the one primarily responsible, the owner, trying to save his skin without anyone noticing. Sounds all too familiar.
What is so difficult about exponential growth?

They don't teach you in business school that economic growth is ultimately limited by the natural world and the gap keeps closing....
