There are a seemingly infinite number of versions of this tune that are vastly superior than this pretentious Barbara Streisand rendition. Diana Krall, Ella Fitzgerald, Julie London, the list goes on and on - Joe Cocker does a better job than Babs.
@meg28781 And we are all entitled to our opinion. Afterall, there were a large number of Indianapolis fans who were livid when the Colts drafted Peyton Manning instead of Ryan Leaf.
This version of Cry Me a River is nothing compared to Susan Boyle's 1999 version. Don't get me wrong, I like Barbara Streisand's music too but her version of Cry Me a River does nothing for me.
If you think about her interpretation its a 3 act play. The first act is the buildup. The second act is the conflict and the third act is the resolution .Barbra does this with a lot of her songs. Maybe that is why she is great!
I saw her sing this live on Johnny Carson's show one night and almost had a heart attack. From then to now I never saw such a SHOCKINGLY good live performance by anybody doing anything on TV!
Still fantastic 47 years later. Over the top Shmover the top. Great performance. Great orchestration. Streisand and Matz working from the Peter Daniels foundation....magic. First heard this in my teens. Still listening. This is test of time stuff. Overdramatic. Yes, but I agree with hunterunc. Her anger and humor and yearning were the hallmark of the sixties Streisand.
todo el mundo te imita pero nadie puedo igualarte ni menos superarte, ni siquiera se acercan a tu interpretación, tremenda voz, impecables bajos y agudos, con sentimientos incluídos en cada tema. INIGUALABLE
When Barbra was young, there was no touching her. She was fearless, and it showed in her music. If only I could have seen her live peforming in "Funny Girl" or in concert in the '60s. Just a generation before my time.
Thank you for this- the very first song on her first solo album. I used to use the word "plebian" from this song to rattle people's cages. It worked. That was 31+ years ago.
I remembered the song. I heard the song when I was growing up over 30 years ago. Thank you for putting it on YouTube. I have always loved Barbara Strisand classics.
Duh, of course this is over the top. That's the point of the performance. She is vengeful and bitter. It's called giving a performance as opposed to just singing the lyrics. You have to remember when this was recorded. Most (white) "girl singers" at the time were soulless--except for Garland of course. Barbra broke new ground here, as she does with everything she touches. Susan Boyle? Please.

I still can't get over how friggin' horrible this version is, hard to believe that even contemporary one hit wonders could molest and mutilate Cry Me a River as thoroughly as Streisand did with this piece of oral diarrhea.
Please don't mix Susan Boyle with Barbra streisand. Matchfyre you're perfectly right. There's not comparison between them: Boyle has her vibrato out of control, and the voice cannot reach the top that Barbra reach. And, gosh, here we hear feelings, while listening to Boyle we hear someone singing.
this sounds like community theater. but at least the voice is excellent.......... watch the vids of her singing it Live - those versions are even more over the top.

She may have
Boyle beat..... No,... Striesand used voice madness to get the point across . Boyle did it with sheer vocal music , way more convincing. Boyle kicked ass on this song!!!
Ok..heard Susan Boyles version..i do like Susan..nice voive.
however,,her version of cry me a river sounds like a plain song sung nicely, where Striesands version..u feel it..it moves u and she sings it with way more passion :)

Neither Barbara, Ella Fitzgerald, Leslie Gore, Diana Krall, Alison Moyet, Lulu, or any of the others who have recorded this song (and esp. Joe Cocker), can compare with Susan Boyle! Some people are just blessed by being at the right place at the right time. Hopefully, Susan's time has finally come by being on BGT. She certainly deserves to finally have her unmatchable talent recognized and honored. (God bless you, Susan, wherever you are, now and always!)
I prefer Barbra Streisand's version. I like Susan Boyle's version, but for me Barbra's controlled anger and pain in her rendition reach a depth I do not find any any other version. Barbra is a true actress and it comes across in her singing. God bless Barbra, Susan, and all of us.
Why always compare artists§ she is absolutly amazing and he rinterpretation is such powerfull. But I like Bayle also very much...Do we really need to choose between these two great artists? ART is not competition. (sorry for my terrible english)
Wow funny almost all of the comments are disabled for the various versions of Babs singing this. Hope it is her fans and not the artist herself. I prefer Boyle's version but doubt she could ever do Evergreen. Babs is way to angry here, but she was 21, a woman and the year was 1968 so maybe the anger fit.
Barbra Streisand was born in 1942 - this song is from her first album and I think I am right it was 1963 (but she was 21)...she said she had somebody in mind when she sang it and although she never said who, I would make an academic guess that it was Barry Dennen...I love this version, it is very 'dramatic' and I don't care what anybody says, Susan Boyle will NEVER come close to this kind of singing. Julie London's version is also excellent.
Barbara Streisand is soooooo big for me! She is toooo good! Outstanding! What the chance of Susan is, is that she is not so much improvising, listen to her version of "cry me a river" - it goes directly into the heart. Barbara is the bigger artist and nobody will frighten her singing ever - but again: we will also like the new version of Susan! Why: because her (Susan's) existing record of 1999 is already sooooo good as well, more natural with outstanding charming and voice! So charming!
Streisand, Darling! You are as stunning as always! Your heart means a river to all of us. Look us up the next time you visit to SLO Town. "...San Luis Obispo is a very magical place..." Melanie Griffith
