@EllTarrant quite a lot of olympic athletes are only around 6 mins and under, the smaller ones anyway, nearly all are 5:50-6:00, the ergs are the easy bit, thats just fitness, which nearly everyone at the top level has equal, olympic standard means nearly always technique and mental ability, the 2009 german world champ 8 only had average erg score of just under 6 mins for god sake!
seriously... last january (2010) i pulled 6:40 2k and i was 14... keeping 1:29 isnt that great... oh and to all those NZ out there.... AUSSIE PRIDE!!!!!!!!!!
I laugh so hard at these people saying "Oh yeah..when I was 14 I could pull 5.45"...Lol we all know you cant manage 8.00 and you're all 110 pounds and live in your mother's attic so STFU.
@kedo38 your so good at rowing. holy shit. 14?! i wish i was as good as you, but at least im not as insecure as you are. that would be pretty bad. haha.
lol yea i did use concept2 erg. and if you don't believe me then you need to look up NZ secondary schools under 15 4 sweep, quad sculls and the 8 winners. I'm 4 seat in the 8 and 2 seat in the other boats. 3 golds at nationals...
come to nz its common place i did 6:58 when i was 14 and lightweight. The NZ record for 14 year olds is 6:32. You cant make a NZ crew with a 6:35, most of our juniors are pulling around 6:20 with some in the low 6min i did 6:17 at my junior trial and i didnt make it. My pb mow is 6:12
i beleive you man im from NZ i know where your coming from i did 6:58 when in was 14 and lightweight and i could get down to 1:14. Are you hbhs? Go hard man you got potential
SubSprinter is thinking of Matthias Siejkowski, a huge German who holds the 2500m erg WR. Rob set the 2k WR back in 2000 at 5.38.3 (WR for 19-29), but Mathias came back and broke it, lowering it 5.37 in 2001.
Rob lowered it again in 2007, to 5.36.6: Not bad for someone who'd been out of a boat for 6 years!
afaik, they're the only two people who have ever gone under 5.40
I rowed against him once in a 500m erg race. He did 1.17 (I did 1.23) and he didn't look like he was even trying :-)
yea rob was actually out of it for 8 years and there has been one other person who went sub 5:40 but he only makes E finals in the single at world champs
No, I did two races that day; a 500 and a 2000. I improved on both of them this year: I think my 500 was 1:25.5, and I also recall the 500 preceded the 2000 this year, which helped. I'm not a rower (obviously) but I do enjoy erging for a few weeks each year in the winter, and being able to compete in it.
"(and minutes before the 500, where I placed 2nd in the 30-39yr age group with a 1:29.2)"
I'm pretty sure he's talking about his 500m split, plus quadruple Olympic gold medal winning Matthew Pinsent had an ergo of 5:42 (I think, and also a British record I think) which would if I'm not a mistaken be 1:25.5 split :o.

Haha, if he did that 2k the right way, his ass should be on the floor.
I barely have energy to unstrap my feet after a 2k.
My best time is 7:33.3. that was my freshmen year.
Im a sophomore next year.

I actually think the Record is in the High 5:30's by a euro dude who doesn't actually row in a boat, just an erg fiend.
bhcdarkness 3 years ago
5:39 by a guy named wadell from new zealand
conray57 3 years ago
I think the world record 2000m erg (5:36.6) is held by Rob Waddell, who's an olympic single scull gold medalist. So he does row in a boat.

wouldn't Steve Redgrave have a better ergo? coz he was the bigger man of the pair with Pinsent. hmmm....
9kervi 3 years ago
Redgrave was about 6'5, but Pinsent was about 6'6 (and heavier) I believe
Guy3105 2 years ago
but in his book he talked about how redgrave pulled him round in a game they did in the pair...strange....hmm

I think that was when Pinsent had just left the junior team and was having his first outing with Redgrave

6:21, i think. but thats on the water, where people are a lot slower. The record 2k erg time is 5:36.

That's the WR for the 8s (it's now 5.19.85, set at the 2004 Olympics).
I think the singles is a better comparison for this. The current WR for single is 6.35.4. Set by a kiwi, of course :-)
smoog 2 years ago
that would be 6.33.35 now..
but still a kiwi :)
