@eventhorizonbm The new SD900 or TM900 or HS900 would be the preferred option as it's newer and has a couple of better features, although video quality is identical in normal to good light.
@eventhorizonbm Both the HS700 & HS900 shoot in 1080/50p which will gives high quality for faster moving objects at opposed to the 'standard' PAL 25p modes.
@OnlineVideoExpert Aside from the 3D, is there anything the 900 series of camcorders offer that the 700 do not? ie - if I don't care for 3D, is there any reason from me to buy a 900 over a 700? Thanks! :)
@wonderpookie My understanding is that the 900 is 'better' (not sure how much) low light performance and a slightly bigger LCD screen, otherwise very similar, so if the 700 is considerably cheaper, it will be a good camcorder to go for.
@aftereffects The HS900 has been announced and should be available shortly, so you should be able to find the HS700 or the cheaper TM700 (same video quality) available cheaper. You might be lucky enough to find a TM700 for £500...
@tiotedTV HS700 has some great features that the Lumix GH2 does not. Get the HS700, unless your subject is sitting still and you don't have to move yourself - then you could use a Lumix GH2.
@kalambalikis Yes in a sense. It records 50i, which when converted is actually 25p. Check Wikipedia for explanations on Interlaced vs Progressive formats.
@kalambalikis I used to use Final Cut Pro & now use Premiere CS5, and I would import the 'standard' footage (shot at 1080 50i) and output at 1080 25p, since 50i basically equals 25p.
The 'top' quality mode shoots 1080 50p natively which is nice and can be used for slow motion effects if exported at 25p, although the 50p mode uses quite a bit of disk space!
I'm very happy with the camcorder, particularly the manual controls for tricky lighting conditions if I have the time to set it up correctly.
Hi, sorry to bug you, but could you please tell me if the low resolution LCD causes problems when trying to see if something is in focus...oh and how is the autofocus on the camera? I currently own the Sony HDR-SR12 and that seems to have a dody focus indoor (even with daylight bulbs) see my videos to see what I mean
@otherjaytube The LCD shows focus quite well, uses blues outlines to show what is in focus in manual mode, and auto focus works well, although can be problematic against white walls on projector screens where there is nothing to 'lock on' to if yo know what I mean.
I was thinking "what's wrong with this bloke's lens and setup???" then I realised you were shooting from the top deck of a London bus. Do you feel that the optical qualities of London bus windows might possibly affect the picture, or the ambient illumination on the top deck possibly affect white balance or other aspects of video exposure? You call yourself a video expert? Well I think you are exposing yourself as a eejit... Respectfully, a notFan ;-)
@BigEric42 Thanks for the feedback. This was a quick 'in the moment' clip because of the interesting lighting of Piccadilly Circus, and uploaded the same night as the camera was brand new at that stage, so I was looking to get some footage up quickly. Always great to get feedback from a fellow expert ;-)
Anyone who calls themselves "expert" in a high tech field such as this deserves a slap. That said, your unedited video footage is breathtakingly impressive in its performance and I confess I was being somewhat irascible. Good Luck in your endeavours and remember that good video is like a good anecdote: People feel better for having witnessed it, want to see and hear more and remember with affection both the punchline and the storyteller. True pros never release their unretouched work.
@Hex72 Well, when you say "I bet you're a very lonely and opinionated person" all I can say is that I am sorry to have misled you. But thanks to you I now know that it isn't only the truth that hurts.
@heartborne No I was not using the MKE-400 just the built in mic for this video, and not concentrating much on it, so not a good test of speech using built-in sound quality in this video. I have not actually used the Rode Videomic with this model and from the photos, it will not be the easiest to use with the HS700 as the shoe is recessed, however it should not present a problem when using the TM700.
Can you tell me if this was shot in full auto mode or did you select manual?
I have a problem with my TM700 in auto mode in low light, when the light changes brighter or darker it keeps switching between auto slow shutter and back again. Problem is with Auto slow Shutter it make it look like the camera is filming in cinema progressive mode cos everything blurs when you pan fast and the picture isnt as clear.
You can see its entered this mode from the display which shows a candle top left.
@modularsolutions Yes, this was shot it full auto. I have noticed that in pretty dark scenes it will switch to Low Light AKA 'Candle' mode, which as you say is essentially a slow shutter mode which does blur any movement. It may be good to test it along side another TM700 to see if that's a fault or 'normal'. By the way I'm sure you already know but only the 1080p 50 is the only mode that shoots progressive, all other modes are recorded in 1080i (interlaced).
@OnlineVideoExpert Yes I understand that the only mode to shoot progressive is 1080p/50. I think that it is ashame it switches so often from slow shutter back to normal again. I will upload you an example later so you can see what I mean. You cant see it as much on a pc screen but if you look on a TV (CRT is worse) you can clearly see it keep switching
@olivermask You have to convert native 1080p60 footage using something like VoltaicHD or Toast Titanium to ProRes for Final Cut Pro, or as mentioned Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 will edit the 60p footage natively straight away.
@olivermask Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 will edit AVCHD natively on PC and Mac, and Final Cut Pro will import and transcode (ideally) to ProRes for editing.
@jpmaximus1 Camera is great, I primarily use it for shooting events or people indoors and always use the manual settings to retain control and consistency. If I'm outdoors and want a quick shot, Auto mode works well, but it does alter settings sometimes seemingly moment to moment, which is why I prefer manual when I have the time to set it up.
Looks like a great piece of kit. Hope to get one later in the year, when prices fall. Problem is .... I've still got 2 standard-def digital video cameras - a Sony DVD403E camcorder, and a Canon XL1S which I've hardly ever used. Where's the best place to sell them? Thanks
Great footage! Can you tell me your settings? Iris, shutter, white balance etc.? Thx ;)

Hi, very informative videos.
Should I wait for the HDC-SD900(the hard drive version, I'm not sure which one it is) or should I go with the 700 like you have? Thanks in advance

@OnlineVideoExpert That's very good to hear, because i use Premiere too. So i guess i won't have trouble doing the conversion. Thank you very much.

@kalambalikis Yes, Premiere Pro CS5 allows direct import of AVCHD media, so no transcoding required, then only a single encode on export, I love it!
