I think Max Brooks did it right. From the outbreak starting somewhere in China/East Asia (the worst possible place to try and contain a zombie outbreak [lots of people per square mile/kilometer/foot, illegal trade, etc]) to the low key initial gov't responses to the pull backs and 'reinventing' of the wheel to take the fight to 'Zack'. Plus, I like how it went on to show mankind taking back the initiative. Most Z-fiction is end of the world and everyone dies at the end eventually. Nice change.
