thank u for the information. People may get confused with choke as an amateur horse owner may think symptoms sound like strangles. anyone that has any fluid suppurperating from the nasal cavity, not eating, difficulty swallowing should contact a vet straight away.
it's strange to see this. I don't know a single person that has not vaccinated for tetnus and strangles. It's not expensive to vaccinate against it and its very easy to avoid strangles (as with many contageous infections/diseases). I've never seen a real case. Thanks for the vid.
there's a straggles outbreak from where i live, my friend's horses caught it, now i can't do anything but wait it out and get my horses vaccinated. this is one issue with boarding horses
But I would warn people not to have their horses vaccinated if there is an immediate threat of the disease.
If the horse contracts strangles before full immunity has developed, up to six weeks after vaccine is given, it may be clinically more ill and serious complication take place.
That was a great video morkel Pienaar. I really enjoyed it. I really needed ALL of the information for my Pony Club project. I liked the visual and the titles. Thanks again, and good job
Speaking of the Guttural Pouches, what are their purposes, if any?
Most articles I have read state an unknown reason for their existance. Would this correct?
This video is very informative. The only thing missing that should be mentioned is the fact that humans can contract the disease themselves from an infective animal, so ive read. So be cautious.
The function of the G,P. are thought to be:1-Help in equalization of the preassure between both sides of the ear drum.2-It is filled with air so it cools the arterial blood flowing to the brain through the neighbouring Internal Carotid artery.
as soon as we get the all clear we are moving her off the yard without touching anything she is in compleat isolation poor thing been in for a month so pls if your horse has had strangles or any sighns or come incontact with a horse who has had strangles even months ago get them tested. if we all work together we can irradicate this horrible disease.
my horse came incontact with a carrier on the yard she is kept at and became a carrier herself and we have had her treated waiting for the results at the mo. vet said all the horses on the yard need to be blood tested to she who are the carriers but are people going to no they are not.

what is strangles?

Vaccine will only protect 75% of horses that are given it. (Source manufacturers own publications)
(About 75% of horses that have had the disease also develop full immunity.)
It follows that even with 100% of horses having vaccination a busy yard will not still not be fully protected from the disease.
I have heard that Intravet have withdrawn the UK vaccine from the market.
Strangles awareness and good hygene standards are more effective than vaccination.

In humans, doctors tap on sinuses to see if it causes pain - possibly that's it?
