All of this controversy over cat food and the reason it is not advisable to use it is the carbs not the protein. Some cat foods are okay but some do have high carbs and therefore translate to higher sugars.
BTW - I have found that many ferret teeth problems were associated with feeding mazuri as it is so hard it strips the enamel. Only acceptable for those who brush the ferrets teeth.
@Moparkatt There's no worry of carbos with GRAIN FREE cat food which is what I am talking about. I never said just feed any crappy cat food from the grocery store.
is there a way to keep them from stinking? would love to have one, but have heard too many horror stories about the stench. i know they can have the glands removed, but they still smell terrible, dont they?
@LeadSlinger89 No, they don't. If the owner doesn't scoop the litter, feeds them crappy food made with fish and/or uses small animal bedding in the cage then yes - they will smell but that's not their fault. Buy the book Ferrets for Dummies and read it COVER TO COVER to educate yourself about them long before getting one. That's one of the most common - and idiotic - stereotypes ferrets have so clearly you don't have a clue about them.
@Ferretocious well, in that you are correct, i dont have a clue about them. but at least im willing to take steps to learn. i have the book on the way now, and i would love to know what food you recomend to reduce the odor. i know they will always have some of the musky odor, but from what i understand from web searches, thats the glands under the eyes, right? i can deal with some odor, but i remember when i was younger friends had them and they were PUTRID. (parents cleaned the cages) Thanks!
@LeadSlinger89 Probably because the ferrets weren't descented. These days most are before you buy them. And glands under the eyes????? Um, no such thing.
@LeadSlinger89 I already mentioned about the food. Far too many people feed food with fish in it - usually Herring Meal - and this makes the poops - and the ferrets - smell horrible. Stick with a food with at least 35% meat protein and grain free - and made with real chicken and/or turkey.
@Ferretocious right, i follow you. i was just asking if there was a specific brand that is per say better for the ferrets than others for one reason or another. example, we feed Pro Plan to our cats due to the fact that it makes the coats shine (and softer) than most other brands, also has less fillers. helps control weight better than the others as well. (though you counldnt tell by looking at my wife's cat...lol) thanks for youre time, i greatly appreciate all the information.
@LeadSlinger89 Mine eat Blue Buffalo Wilderness which is grain free, 40% meat protein and since it's a cat food, the same food I feed my cats. I buy the bigger bags so it's not that expensive to feed everyone one of the best foods on the market.
@Ferretocious ah, ok. that WOULD make life alot easier! hey, thanks for the help, i greatly appreciate it! i'll quit buggin you now. lol
as i said earlier, i have the ferrets for dummies on the way, so ill be sure to read it fully before i go any further in considering bringing one of these guys home.
ok, i lied, last question. does male or female matter in personality? like cats, the males tend to me more affectionate, females seem to be more reclusive. or are males and females the same?
"That's one of the most common - and idiotic - stereotypes ferrets have so clearly you don't have a clue about them." - You. It is reprehensible that you snark your viewership and then recommend that they feed ferrets cat food - that recommendation is out of date. Go ahead and google it if you don't believe me. While high end cat food is acceptable if there is no alternative - I fed mine Evo Ferret and it had noticeable positive effect on their overall health.
@nowevilivewon Please show me the difference INGREDIENT WISE in Evo Ferret and Evo Cat. There IS NONE. It's only SMALLER piece sizes with the exact same ingredients. Mine actually eat a mix of Evo CAT and Blue Buffalo Wilderness. So please - stop being such an ass. I've had ferrets for over 15 years and serve on the board of a shelter and have twice been in Ferrets Magazine - you?
just wanted to be clear, i really like these little guys, and would love to have one, but i refuse to be another uneducated owner who doesnt have a clue what im getting myself into. i want to make sure that its something that i can deal with and enjoy. not worried about the responsibility, between me an my wife, i think we can handle it. youre not dealing with the kids you probably usually deal with on here. lol you just have alot of knowlege on these and seem like a great person to ask. thanks
You know.. I had a ferret that acted exactly as you described in the video description... unfortunately my parents waited too long to take her in to the vet... I still feel guilty to this day :(
I commented 10 months ago about my ferrets needing dentals - it went really well and was about $500 for both of them, one had a few teeth pulled. Turns out genetically some need dentals every year, I'm going back in tomorrow to do it all over again, one of my guys has an ulcer in his gum. :(
I have 7. one came with adrenal desease. I give Syndley two melotonin tabs, squirt of ferritone, flomax for his prostrate trouble every day. I feed them Blue Buffalo brand kitten chow for wild cats. It has a linx on the package. It has no grains and anti toxins in it. IT is the best. Mine all have good coats except Syndley, I have had them for about 5 months now. 3 belong to another I am setting for. It can be costly when they develop conditions. I think what you feed them makes a difference.
@inspire734 Not sure of the point of your post. It's spelled Lynx and I feed the same food - Blue Buffalo Wilderness - and probably know far more about ferrets than you do. You've had ferrets five months? I've had them for over 15 years. This particular ferret had bad teeth due to his prior owner feeding him crappy cat food for the first year of his life. Bad teeth can also be genetic.
@RYAND548 Go die in a fire. Ferrets are intelligent animals with just as much- let me scratch that MORE of a right to live than you. Ferreting was banned mainly because of economical damage with polecat/ferret hybrids. But there was the other party wanting it banned so there not uncared for as wonderful animals from people like you. Also even though it was only the vet bill that was $600 there are $600 ferrets but that because there usually bred to be safe. healthy and wonderfully loved. sicko.
It's amazing how they are still so physco even after surgury Last year my albino ate string and had to get it removed from his tummy, when we got home he was already wanting to be let out of the cage to play!
im sooooo sorry to hear about little Puck ! I have 4 ferrets and i call them my fuzzy children. You shouldnt really bother with @RYAND548, a 14 year old has no clue about money and responsibility. I bet his parents pay for all his ferrets supplies. I also have 2 kids, a 4 yr old and 11 yr old and my 11 yr old loves our ferrets, but probably much to my dismay would grieve shortly, then want another ferret. Thats just todays youth sadly
@scaryhogmandog "true ferret lovers will do anything for their little fluffies..."
I agree. My little girl required surgery when she was about 1. It cost me $1200 but I would not have done it differently. She is now about 5 and I love every minute with her! I never take a single day for granted with these wonderful little creatures.
@Tummyboxx No clue as I'm not a vet, I have no idea what vets charge near you and don't have a clue what your ferrets need. Get them is ASAP. Ferrets can go VERY quickly downhill and DIE if you do nothing.
True ferret lovers will do anything for their little fluffies. We had three ferrets die in one year. We spent a lot of money on medications, but they had tumors. One died, and I wanted another one cause I missed having more ferrets, so I got one. He died a week later after I got him.... :(
@scaryhogmandog They're such fragile little critters :( I lost Puck on Sep 30th. He was fine one day and the next lethargic and not eating. Vet said it was most likely lymphoma. Then two weeks after that I lost my two eldest - Sassy and Roxy - who'd both been on treatment for Adrenal and Adrenal/Insulinoma.
@Ferretocious That's so upsetting. Poor little ferrets... But, if you get ferrets you've got to expect that they might get some disease. I wish ferrets weren't so prone to diseases. RIP little furries.
We spent a shitload of money on our first ferret when it had a tumor, and it didnt help, and then our next ferret got a tumor and we couldnt afford the surgery that would only let him live a few months longer so we had to put him down :'(
i agree you shouldn't get rid of him just because he needs medical treatment and by the way thats WAY TO MUCH for a ferret i would buy it just to save it but i dont have that much money!
I think he deserves a badass story like he fought a bear and the bear tried to eat his leg so hes got a bandage or maybe he was cruzin the town late at night and got in a bar fight, from what i hear it was intense but man you should see the other guy ;)

I LOVE all of your videos. I'm looking into adopting two ferrets when I graduate college in May. I have been studying about them for a few months. I'm visiting a ferret rescue tomorrow. I'm so excited. They ask me to volunteer there...help clip toenails, play, etc. It'll help me learn more about them before I take them into my own home.
Your little guys are absolutely hilarious...so full of energy and great personalities.
Also, your narrating is absolutely great. I love watching your vids
Only if you can afford the medical bills they'll end up with later in life. It's always better to space their ages out by at least six months - if not a year.
Excuse me? Scruffing a ferret is a completely safe way to hold one. And you'd know that if - like me - you've had ferrets for several years. I've had them for over 12, serve on the board of a shelter and have been interviewed by Ferrets Magazine three different times - you?
Yeah, I just recently got a job at Petco and I've fallen in love with the little guys. I've been saving half my checks and plan on doing it for a while to get a ferret, all its needs and have a reserve for vet things.
Good for you and yes a lucky pet. I had a rattie with a tooth problem too and they needed to be removed. Unfortunately she had infection in her jaw and cancer too and although we tried everything, we lost the battle. I think that was >$1,200.00. And I'd do it all over again. Their lives are in our hands, after all.
You didn't "find" it there that's how much they sell them for. Did you read "Ferrets for Dummies" cover to cover? If not - DO. Ferrets are a LOT of work and VERY expensive to care for. You should never impulsively get one.
im planing to get a ferret but im trying to get more money to buy the ferret and all it needs and i couldnt find a ferrets for dummies at all but i know how to take care of them i only said i found a ferret for $100.00 at petco. the found is ive benn to different places for the cheepest and 99.99 is the least
LOL gee, thanks for clarifying that. Of course they're ferrets. Ferret owners often call their ferrets "weasels" simply because they're members of the weasel family.
I also was laid off in Oct and just started my own biz so other than paltry unemployment payments I've had noooo income. So definitely bad timing for a pet to get sick :( But such is life. At least he's fine now - he's been bouncing around like a crazy monkey.
yes but an unmade bed is much more fun to burrow into for a ferret than a made bed any day. Glad to hear he is feeling so much better. Sorry to hear that it cost so much to get him feeling better.
Aww brave little soldier! It'll hit him later, waves of wide awake and ZzZzonk! Indie our 5 1/2yr old boy has a "sore" kidney, we're hoping it's an infection but if the antib's don't work he off for a scan/xray. He is bright as a button after anesthetic and passes out where he's standing 5 mins later!
This morning I gave him his pain meds and when I went to put everyone back in the cage after playtime Puck was already in there sound asleep and snoring LOL
All of this controversy over cat food and the reason it is not advisable to use it is the carbs not the protein. Some cat foods are okay but some do have high carbs and therefore translate to higher sugars.

If you are looking for the cheapest ferret, how will you pay the vet bills?
scrubjay93 2 years ago
Yeah no kidding. Don't get a ferret if money is an issue with you. They're VERY expensive to care for.

Thanks :) He's a young ferret - so it was either give him the care he needs or put him to sleep. Definitely an easy decision!

He's too cute. I love your ferrets and your videos! =]

why did you call them weasels? they are definitely ferrets?
sasukeissexy01 3 years ago
LOL gee, thanks for clarifying that. Of course they're ferrets. Ferret owners often call their ferrets "weasels" simply because they're members of the weasel family.

haha yeah thanks, i totally figured that out like after i posted that lol
