  • love you bro. :)

  • 2/3 mnutes tf2 took me 27 hous and 36 minutes dont moan about 2/3 minutes lol

  • dude can you reuload tha fill!

  • This is still more effective than Steams local defrag by the way.

  • This video is from 2008, Steam does this automatically now. If you want to do it manually for whatever reason, you can right click the game in your library -> Properties - > Local files -> Defrag cache files.

Also, "don't worry about what it does, just download it" is horrible advice.

  • Do you really want to teach people to download and run .exe files without stopping to think what they do?

  • great tutorial...you went at the perfect speed for me to follow along and do what you were saying as you said it without really pausing and I don't know if it fixed my problem yet as it's still defragging but the tutorial itself was great thanks a lot!

  • Thanks man, I hope this fixes the hiccups/stutters in TF2

  • God you have a sexy voice. It's making me so hard right now.

  • anyone know if this works on mac?

  • "Don't worry about what it says, what it does, or how it works".

    Smug much?

  • @Armytoast

He's saying don't bother with the details. Normally this is VERY bad advice to follow, But in this case, it works perfectly.

  • thx bra

  • thanks, friend

  • Thanks for this , I was unable to defrag normally.

  • You are a very nice man, you know that?

  • tks great tutorial!! im using it right now lets see how it works...GJ!!! PS: the link you gave for the program is not working anymore (at least for me) i had to find it in other websites :) good luck

  • If you save it as all files, Windows will recognise the name after the period as a file extension. It's an extra step but I thought I'd just throw it out there.

  • what does this do?

  • Hey know what , ur a kind person , :D

  • uhmmm...how do you then get the games?

  • link not workinnng

  • About the "NO valid Win32 Application": you get this problem (I got it too^^) because you're using the 64-bit HLExtract program, and you don't have a 64-bit Operating System that can handle with it --> That's why you get the crash.

What is the solution? Don't use 64-bit program! ;)

How? Well, instead of copying the HLExtract.exe (and its library) from the x64 folder (64-bit --> "x64" huh), copy it from the x86 folder (and paste it to steamapps, etc.)

  • @yandros3000 Ah, forgot it: you must download the LATEST version of the program, bothe folders are located into the "bin" directory.

    PS: Nice video, pretty clear!

  • @yandros3000

hi ok if i have an x64 system win 7 but my steam is installed in x86 folder than what to use better? x64 or x84?

    sry 4 bad english ;D

  • @lamapukas hmmm, I think both should work (32-bit apps always work on 64-bit OS, and a 64-bit app should work on a 64-bit OS too, even if your program is located at an x86 folder (that is only a different name, your Operating System is in any folder a 64 bit operating Sytem ;) ). Thus x64 should be the best. If it doesn't work, then use x84 ;)

  • @yandros3000

ok ty but why the site is broken :(

  • i download the undead things i run it so i got all the game in my steam library but then when i install some like COD4 or 6 it says it's too busy so i try some other game like TF2 and it work but when i start the game when i want to connect it says Steam validation rejected. So then i try to download the things from GCF but it dont update the links so i dont know what to do i try to play one of those game untill a day but it still dont work can someone help me!!!!

  • excellent video, man helped me a lot, that wanted to download the grand theft auto 4 and could not, so I subscribe and I give my hand up, good video, you also subscribe to my channel pz

  • is there a way to alter the bat file to make it work with the ncf files that games like cod use?

  • @embeescm

From what I understand, the NCF files don't suffer the fragmentation that GCF's do. GCF's seem to fragment pretty badly when they are updated.

  • Hi. Thanks for the video, it seems to work fine on most of them. However, whilst it's defragmenting, it says some pf he files are 'closed' and doesn't defrag them. Just wondering why this happens and how I can fix this?

    Thank you!

  • You can also change the 'Save As type' to 'All Files' and it will keep your file extension without needing the quotation marks.

  • ya pa moyen tu met 1 dossier avec tou les GCF

  • doesn't Steam's own defragment tool do the same?

    ( Steam client - Library/Games tab - right click on a game - Properties/Local Files tab - Defragment Cache Files )

  • @nagypocak2 yeah but whenever i do that it says "your files are do defragmented to defrag" pls help :(

  • Quick question: What exactly is it doing when it defrags the files?

  • @RMG4646 it seperates them so it knows where to find them.

  • Work Great! Thx for this.

  • Comment removed

  • Need help it only extracts hl2 :( rreally need help my games are extremely slow.

  • Mine went perfect! Garrys mod instantly!

  • Comment removed

  • it worked on my pc but does it work on a mac?

  • i cannot save bat file

  • Thanks for the video, very helpful stuff.

  • If i do this with CS.1.6 gcf file, it's working, and not say to it's not registered? (cd-key, and soory for my bad english)

  • this guys voice is australian, of course you'd think a sniper would have a good voice ^_^

  • thx dude

  • Thank you. Goddamn steam defragger defragments my files, and it goes from 7% to 10%

  • @TheStabbyBunny

If it goes from 7% to 10%, that would be fragmentation, not defragmentation.

  • codmw2 - binaries.ncf / content.ncf / english.ncf / mp binaries.ncf / resurgence pack.ncf / stimulus pack.ncf --- the only .gcf are sourceinit.gcf & winui.gcf

  • I dont see any .gcf's having to do with MW2 all the MW2 files are ncf's - load time is still 3minutes -

  • @Aeipox

GCF's are what Valve uses for most of their games. NCF's for newer games, and other developers. This won't defrag NCF files as they are set up differently than GCF's.

  • thanks bro, nice tutorial

  • Great!

  • lol h is not hache itis ache

  • sheit my tf2 usually takes 30 mins max but today it took 10 MINS THEN WHEN I GOT IN THE GAME IT LAGS AND THEN I DC -_-...

  • @lumpofpaper8

If it takes 10 minutes to load your computer either has serious prolems, or you are way, way under spec.

  • I closed steam, and when I ran the bat file it kept saying "C:\ect.ect.\steam\steamapps\hlcextract.exe is not a valid Win32 application"

please help, I cant figure out what i did wrong.

  • @nintendow1 try using the other version (inside the "bin" directory you should see both x64 and x86. i tried x64 (which didnt work) so i tried x86 and it did. GL!

  • @nintendow1 Has anyone figured out the "not valid Win32 application" problem yet?

  • @nintendow1 it's either corrupted, or you got a 64-bit version.

  • @nintendow1 Run as administrator.

  • lol this guys voice is hot

  • @ceznic007 ..........

  • @ceznic007 Uh.. Thanks.

  • @Bacender lol im not gay its just that for some reason i like hearing your voice

  • @Bacender I'm being serious here. I thought I made a TF2 Video years ago without my knowing. Your voice is eerily to mine, almost identical even. Where are you from? Anywhere near South-West England?

  • @ceznic007 i hope ur a girl lol

  • Your voice is clear and informative, its rare to find a good tutorialist(most likely not a word, my Firefox spellchecker certainly thinks so.. fuck it) on youtube.

  • Is there a way I can modify this .batch file to verify the GCFs instead of defragmenting them?

  • @LakeMonsterManiak Never mind. In order to make a .BAT file which validates all of one's GCFs, one simply puts this in the .BAT instead of the defrag script thingie:

    for %%F in (*.gcf) do HLExtract.exe -m -v -s -t root -p "%%F"

    pause

  • You have my automatic respect. You have "Stubbs the Zombie", enough said.

  • Thanks!!!

  • Thank you!

  • Thanks dude.im sure this made some diff but i don see any

  • @deyu96 LOL

  • Do we need to defrag every time the steam client updates or every time a game updates?

  • @RooneyCantona The game.

  • ty so much for this.been using this for years now for my steam. it does help cutting down load times in like half. hope u wont take the vid down.!

  • ty so much for this.been using this for years now for my steam. it does help cutting down load times in like half. hope u wont take the vid down.!

  • Thank you

  • How do i extract modern warfare 2 NCF files?

  • You are a great person! I downloaded the newest version of that HLLIB program and used common sense to figure out what to do with the newer version. Your video helped a LOT. The description and step-by-step easy instructions make you one of the BEST Youtube Computer Program Tutor on the web! Thanks again!

  • The files in the rapidshare link are out of date, make sure you google for HLlib. The first result is the creators website. You will download a larger archive with a bunch of other tools, but the HLExtract has a separate folder with x86 and x64 sub folders that contain the .exe and .dll.

  • @coojoe89 Updated the link.

  • @Bacender Awesome, great post. TF2 took especially long to defrag and I noticed a generally smoother/faster game after defrag. Thanks again.

  • @coojoe89 i am running windows 7 32bit should i use x64???

  • Comment removed

  • @coojoe89 I'm using Windows XP 32bit. I'm assuming I want to use the files from the x86?

  • @Narratorway Yes. Use the x86.

  • My defrag is going incredibly slow..it may just be Age Of Chivalry, i'll see how the next game goes but thanks anyway, hopefully i wont have to wait 2 minutes to load gmod servers

  • Great clear guide, favourited

  • Thanks man, this was a big help. This fixed my lag in CZ.

  • @meilenwerk5 No, impossible.

  • it dont defrag .ncf files ?

  • @42bigboss NCF is a newer filesystem from valve that supposedly does not suffer from internal fragmentation, ergo, doesn't need to be defragged.

  • Is this process different than the built-in Steam feature?

Right click the game you're having problems with, select "Properties," then the "Local Files" tab, and then "defragment cache files".

Try this method before you do the one above, as it's very simple and takes little time.. Especially try it if you're told that the server you're playing on can't connect to Steam (for a TF2 loadout for example). In reality it's just you.

  • Very nice, thanks man.

  • Cool.

  • Thank you it is very god

  • Well don't that beat all!

  • I didn't use the quotations and t still worked just fine for me...

  • @sandmaster666 Also, as I was going through the whole process, I lost a good... 15GB of space on HD and I'm short on space already... Is that supposed to happen?

  • @sandmaster666 Sounds like something else is causing the issue. External fragmentation can sometimes cause files to bloat, however since this is internal fragmentation of a filesystem, you shouldn't experience anything like that. Not sure what it could be, but it's definitely not this.

  • @sandmaster666 You must be special.

  • @Bacender Same for me :D

    it worked without teh quotations!

  • great video good job

  • THANK YOU im gonna see if Gmod has a difrence

  • wat bout GMOD! (the time to load kills me)!

  • Awesome, and good english aswell :D

  • thanks mate!

  • Thank you very much! I knew and used this defrag, but got a new computer, so I needed new instructions! Thank you for this, very clear!

  • This is quite nice....

I shall give this a try. Nice explanation as well.

  • I tried creating the Defrag.bat file without success. I'm currently running on windows 7. When I try to open it, windows says that it cannot open this type of file, Can anyone help me please?

  • @theroux929 do u use the quotation marks?

i'm using windows 7 too and works fine ^^

  • @theroux929 Have you tried right clicking .bat and selecting "Run as administrator"?

  • i cant download from rapidshare, do u have any other link to any other website other than rapidshare or megaupload?

  • @MrDEVIL344 search google for hllib210.zip

  • defragmenting now! this is an awesome video :D

  • is the steam intergrated defrag less good ?

  • Thank you, this has helped me a lot, much appreciated!

  • Can you do this for whole gamefolders? i've heard it might help loss and choke problems oddly enough

  • Thanks that really helped me with the loading time of my Half Life 2!

  • how do i do .dll file 3.02 dont works to do *defrag.but*

  • how do i do .dll file 3.02 dont works to do *defrag.but*

  • god im an idiot.. can some1 please tell me what defragging games is and what it does and how it effects my games. thank you!

  • defragging is like having a suitcase full of random sheets of paper all ruffled up and stuff. when the person asks you for something in it it takes longer to find it. defragging is like taking everything out and organizing it so you know where to find anything. same with computer ;)

  • Mr.Lumpy xD : D 1:30

  • I need to know how to put model files into gcf files! Can someone help me? PLEASE! :(

  • ok i done everything now il start the full defrag of the steamapps....(damn 50 gb of data)

  • I already knew how to do this but this is a great tutorial for people who want to get the best performance out of their games. 5 stars.

  • I did this. Now Steam is corrupted and won't start. It says files aren't found. Not blaming anyone of anything but I really don't want to ave wasted upwards of $200.

Does uninstalling Steam remove the games as well?

  • Your games aren't gone anywhere, you can re-download them all again. All steam games are linked to your account. If anything has happened, just delete steam, and all folders and games, and re-download it all. Time consuming but no damage done.

  • Try verifying game cache, uninstalling and reinstalling, or uninstall steam and the games from the Uninstall program area on the control panel.

  • I told ya don't touch that darn thing ;)

Yeah, redownload the files, verify cache, blah de blah de blah

  • Of course not.

  • no it doesnt you just need the account data to have them :)

  • @Drouge87

You can uninstall steam and reinstall but I would recommend backing up the hole steamapps folder before doing so, then after installing steam put the folder back, overriding everything.

With steam you can always re-download the game, even multiple times to different computers, the games are linked to your account, you have them forever.

  • Thanks everyone, but actually, I didn't need this.

Turns out that All I needed to do was reinstall Steam in a different location, then delete it...I don't pretend to know how it works.

Anyway, Steam is still slow...but I think I'll stick to the Steam defrag now...

  • Best thing you can do is save the steamapps folder. If the corruption is within the games themselves, either find them or re-dowload. You can download any games that you own on steam indefinitely.

  • megaupload is WAAAAAY better.

  • Rapidshare error.

    I despise rapidshare.

  • Yes steam does defrag them too but only ione game at a time this way it will do all gcf's in your steamapps folder makign the process much quicker.

  • Thanks man your a beast. Haven't ran it completely, but hopefully it helps (getting super slow load times for any hl2 games).

  • is this only for tf2 ??

  • Urh fucking rapid share being a cunt ! i need this now !!

  • dude cant you just go to properties and click defrag the game cache files?

  • @MariosGuy This whole point of this is that it's MUCH more effective then the standard defrag that comes with steam. Use it ;)

  • 2:45 why have to be so hard save file to *.bat or anything else (example *.mp3)?

Select "All files" to drop panel, below save-file-text line...

  • Good tutorial.

  • good tutorial

  • lol Thanks (Again i used this one time) but i started it 2 times(not Extra i just clicked it sometimes because my Computer laaaGEd!) then i became blue screen ^^

  • Im using windows 7, and i tried this. It worked to an extent......

It defragged all the files for all my games, when it got to TF2 however it did Team Fortress 2 Client fine, closed it, but when it gets to Team Fortress 2 Content,

Red letters say No error reported, and it dosn't finish defragging that file, then skips onto the next file, I've reinstalled TF2 2 times now, PLEASE HELP!

  • What happens is my game takes forever to load,

    Im using Windows 7,

    2.9 AMD dual core,

Asus 9600 GSO 512 mb gpu,

    500 gb(465 gb) HDD,

2 gigs DDR2 Ram(Can't remember speed off the top of my head).

  • where i can download gcfs??

  • Dude that is an epic fail.. just epic fail

  • Devvo

  • Comment removed

  • DUDE I'm so happy I finally found a solution! My TF2 was starting to take like 5 mins just to launch :(

  • thanks man :]

i recently transferred my steam apps to my new laptop and then steam only told me once to defrag my games. but it never came back up D: so this helped :D

  • Hey, I go to the forums website but I cannot seem to find the link to your website nemisis. Whats the direct URL link? PLEASE!!!

  • 10+ on this one friend. Good job. Havent played tf2 in a while due to the excessive load up time. thank you~!
