The brain is an organ and it can get sick just like any other organ. The problem is that it's more complicated than any other organ and it's a lot harder to study. Only in the last few decades have scientists even had a reliable way of looking at a living brain, let alone understanding it. So making a list of all the mistakes that were made in the "history" of psychology doesn't mean that we should chuck science itself out the door and start blaming all our problems on MAGIC ALIEN GHOSTS!

Nevertheless, you're decades behind the curve if you think psychoanalysis is the only thing psychologists do. Chemical analysis as well as MRI imaging are regularly used in the diagnosis of mental illnesses.

I agree that anti depressants don't deal with the root of the problem, but people who are in a deep depression are sometimes not able to deal with LIFE, never mind getting to the root of the problem. Anti depressants can be instrumental in getting people to the point where they are able to deal with problems.

Normal people think that these diseases can be cured by strong minds and exercise, and I used to think so too when I did not understand fully or see up close the effect it has on people, and how medication/treatment is necessary. Psychiatry is absolutely a science and has saved many families from complete destruction.

I have two family members with bipolar 1 and 2, and had it not been for anti depressant and anti psychotic meds, they would both have been living in mental institutions full time.

I don't know much about Tom's theory about the history of psychiatry but it seems obvious to me that here he is talking about electroshock "therapies" of the past. Well, i just came off of an anti-depressant that was giving me electric shocks IN MY BRAIN. He is right - these drugs are bad things in general. They should only be given to people for the most extreme reasons as protection. As soon as they do their job, they should be discontinued.

The brain is an organ and it can get sick just like any other organ. The problem is that it's more complicated than any other organ and it's a lot harder to study. Only in the last few decades have scientists even had a reliable way of looking at a living brain, let alone understanding it. So making a list of all the mistakes that were made in the "history" of psychology doesn't mean that we should chuck science itself out the door and start blaming all our problems on MAGIC ALIEN GHOSTS!

If a doctor diagnoses you with cancer, he would show you a scientific test to prove that, but a psychiatrist can never do that.

@Ayatollah7800 There was a time when cancer couldn't be tested for either. Nor even observed, in most cases. Its presence could only be determined through analysis of symptoms weighed against theory. This made diagnosis less accurate than it is today, but not pseudoscientific.
Nevertheless, you're decades behind the curve if you think psychoanalysis is the only thing psychologists do. Chemical analysis as well as MRI imaging are regularly used in the diagnosis of mental illnesses.

I think too many people rely on medication to fix everything then actually trying to cope with it or finding a natural way to cure themselves or to cope, also I'd have to disagree in not using them at all, because sometimes there just isn't a natural way to fix certain problems, that require medication. I think it's a hard subject to discuss, unless you're a doctor or academic in scientology, I would love to see a debate, between a person from each walk of life.

Normal people think that these diseases can be cured by strong minds and exercise, and I used to think so too when I did not understand fully or see up close the effect it has on people, and how medication/treatment is necessary. Psychiatry is absolutely a science and has saved many families from complete destruction.

while I do not believe or agree with Scientology, even I oppose it. But I think Tom is right about anti-depressents and anxiety pills. You can treat anxiety/depressant using CBT, NLP and meditation. Taking drugs in long term can harm you. i have treated people using nlp and cbt and drugs are used during therepy but I avoid them.
