I firmly believe their is an error in the lyrics on the video and at his website where you can find all of the lyrics to all of his songs. Just goes to show you that the artist cannot always police every aspect of his business. It sounds like he clearly says: "Half asleep 'neath the stars with a small dog licking your face"...not, "near the stars" as written. Any thoughts?

Thank you for the upload! Magnificent song. So chilling in it's descriptions of the evil in the world disguised as friends, priests, presidents, prophets and saviors. Back when it was first released, I was trying to figure out who it was about. But I finally realized it is about many people. Bob must have gone through such suffering both his own and witnessing that of others, to feel compelled to write this piece.
