The Genesis port was decent, and game with the Genesis until Sonic came out.

And at Genesis launch there wasn't many good games out due to Nintendo's hold on 3rd parties until that was broken by the late 80's.

I think its a fun game in the same way Kung-Fu on the NES was great.

The difference between the two versions is not that significant - if anything the arcade version is better because of the graphics. I've played it through a number of times - once you've got used to the controls its quite fun; just as good as anything else out at the time.

This is a game I didn't get to play as a kid, and then when I played it a few years ago (thanks to emulation) I was wondering what all the hype of this game is all about.

Although, I will say this is probably better then Golden Axe. I loved Golden Axe as a kid, I went to pizza hut and played it there, but now I look back at Golden Axe and I see a game that's aged very poorly. A sega beat-em-up that has aged WELL is Streets of Rage 2, much better then both Altered Beast and Golden Axe.
