Wtihout Germany's help Finland would most probably have lost the Continuation war. But as soon as Finland signed the peace treaty with the Soviet Union, Stalin wanted the germans driven out of Finland. "Lapin sota" started and took place in northern Finland as you wrote.
@MadeInFinland44 uhhmm... russia had its aims - they were to gain some border territories between USSR and Finland. It never wanted to conquer Finland as modern propaganda says. And the USSR actually helped Finland in the Lapin Sota

Just realised that we are talking about russians, not soviets.
I don't think it is such a surprice that the soviets helped the finns with driving out the germans, since it happened on Soviet demand.
