ha ha Katy Freeway, this freeway intrigues me too much because I drove thru it when it was a 6 main lane freeway-I trip out everytime-before construction
Katy fwy is the best looking freeway in houston, 59 where its dips down with the chrome overpasses is nice, 290 looks pretty good, 45 north & south need makeovers, i10 est needs a makeover too..
@willubhave Houston is twice the size of Chicago, almost double New York, and larger than Los Angeles we definitely have the space to accommodate millions of more people. so get busy..
@robins82 NW FREEWAY OR US-290 NW . is in the process of extensive reconstruction .. it will not look like the katy freeway ,as in lane counts . but us-290 will go from anywere 6-8 lanes . to a new mininum of 10 . in harris county . droping to 8 each way after the nw beltway .. also nw hempstead toll will be conctructed just a mile on the southern edges of us-290 . it will be the new nw transit , as they will remove all hov operations from us-290
@giloutoudou the highest speed limit in the city are on the toll roads 65mph , most freeways if not all are 60 mph , however most people dont drive that , i would guess it flows at a average speed of about 65 on this freeway during non congested hours
Albeit an impressive engineering feat, will the Texas government realise that widening freeways actually solves nothing? The addition of each lane is the addition of latent demand; it's been proven but nobody seems to notice. Solving congestion is more than adding lanes, it's about modal share changes, encouraging car-free development, and good planning habits. Just look at the congestion in the beginning of the video; the Katy Freeway will eventually reach capacityagain.
this is truly a superhighway, Houston is expected to be as big as Los Angeles by 2020. I wont be surprised if TXDOT decides to expand this freeway again
thanks .. well the interchange may not be as high .. but it very well surpasses ramp length .. thats wat i meant by it.. ( raped as in better or no longer as good . )
sweet vid, and nice wide angle! one of the selling points on the specific digicam i currently own was the fact it has pretty good wide-angle (28mm) as well as decent video modes. i've recently started filming some of atlanta's main in-town corridors/districts...
actually the old hov was elemanated from i-610 to tx-6 . after tx-6 there is a section of 4 hov lanes for about 3 miles then it drops to 2 , all the way to katy texas
There's been some controversy as to weather the high 5 in Dallas is a true 5 stack since the frontage roads aren't part of the interstate. Unless its the same in Houston?
...excuse my ignorance - I am Australian - but these lanes allow you to travel faster than the other lanes or is there something else going on - thanks and great vid - so clear...
these lanes and managed , so in another words you must pay to use them .the speed limit is the same 60mph on the whole freeway , so its not any faster than the i-10 freeway .. but in rush periods it is ..
Dude, this is seriously your best video! I watched it three times it was that good. Awesome job!
I drove this stretch this past summer and was amazed by the work TxDOT did on this amazing reconstruction. I wish that they would have put in a concrete barrier separating the HOT & general lanes instead of plastic poles. They did the same in Miami on 95, so that must be the way to go these days.
Yeah, folks cross left and right out of the lane at will, which really defeats the purpose of the lane. There are only four HOV-dedicated lanes in Atlanta, if memory serves, anyway.
True , But Enclosed HOV Lanes do have a major down side , i see it all the time .. on the inner city houston hov , i stalled vehicle can mean 5pm get home or 9 pm get home
Wide loads in every lane :D

...are you serious.
Katy went through all the trouble to make I-10 the widest road on the planet... and yet traffic is NOT MOVING?!
There better've been an accident at the end of that chaos at 1:46.

what was your speed then, 65? i've heard than you won't be pulled over by cops unless you drive above 85 on houston freeways

i guess 80 mph? more? less?

actually i disagree with the fact that widening doesnt solve anything .. in some rare cases it does if its big enough .
ScrewdUPClickV2 2 years ago
@bbukfan lol, traffic at the beginning was only because of the wreck or wht ever was happening... dont be a hater ;p

Loved the ride and loved the wide angle lens, nice editing too.
BUT!!!! I still think the High-Five is a better interchange than the "West Sam Stack".
Plus, how would one interchange rape another? talk about a game of twister?
Freewayjim 2 years ago
thanks .. well the interchange may not be as high .. but it very well surpasses ramp length .. thats wat i meant by it.. ( raped as in better or no longer as good . )
ScrewdUPClickV2 2 years ago
I've read that some ramps on the high five are roughly a mile long, I think it's a close contest there.
Freewayjim 2 years ago
yes at minimum 1 mile .. the hov flyover is that easy

Is Houston trying to rape Dallas again?

.. get raped as in owned ., or this is better

Ah I see. So thats what the first caption was for.
By the way awesome editing. I was never really sure the frontage roads in Dallas even counted anyways.
eluko79 2 years ago
This Is Houston .. What did you mean by frontage roads in Dallas
ScrewdUPClickV2 2 years ago
if im not wrong the frontage roads actually dive under the interchange at i-610 . there not visable in the video

I like how Texas does their HOV lanes. They're acutally separated with a physical barrier, not just double white lines, like in Georgia.
Bryant5493 2 years ago
I Honestly dont see how you can opperate i HOV or as here a managed lane without a barrier ..
