Yes, a normally fuse doesn't works, you need a Black Powder Line or something that do much higher temperature, with NM it's easier to detonate it, than with Diesel.

thermite isnt the most effective because it is not as quick to react as gunpowder or ANFO is...You would need a large quantity of both booster and oxygen to make it expand fast enough to get an explostion...otherwise, the thermite and its 2000-4000 degrees C would just melt directly through your pipe.

no, it has a very low detonation velocity. It realy isnt worth it. If you want a good plasic explosive you can use ANNM and mix it with two other of the shelf chemicals. It will create a high explosive putty that is nearly as powerfull as C-4
I doubt you will ever pack AP to max density and achieve 5500m/s. Things like PETN will decrease dramatically in VOD as density falls below theoretical max of 1.6g/cc. Your PETN may only be going 5500-6000m/s if you are just packing powder without a binder.

Add 5weight% fine powdered activated carbon to fine powdered ammonium nitrate.
You can increase the trigger sensitivity of ANFO,
and you can detonate ANFO easier.

ANFO (Amoniumnitrate) and NM (Nitromethane).
Mix it like that example: 90-95% ANFO and 5-10% NM.
Instead of NM you can use regular Diesel, but detonate with Nitromethane it's much easier and better.

Stop asking how to blow something up! First, you have to purify it, like what Calv said, then add a fuel in a special ratio to achieve ANFO (the mixture to achieve full det) otherwise, pure NH4NO3 won't detonate completely because it's very insensitive.

damn thats cool. i made a 700gram explosive
(8% parafin wax 2% acetone peroxide 2% diesel and then 88 % amonium nitrate. it made much less smoke and a impreseive creater but thats only becuae i threw it into this rabit hole under a tree it blew up the botom ot the tree. it the fell after we kiked it. my primary cap was 0.3 grams acetone peroxode and booster was 5ml NG and 2 grames potasium nitrate.
its fun but materials can be costly (espesialy for me im 13 and to me 45$ is alot)

no, it has a very low detonation velocity. It realy isnt worth it. If you want a good plasic explosive you can use ANNM and mix it with two other of the shelf chemicals. It will create a high explosive putty that is nearly as powerfull as C-4

I doubt you will ever pack AP to max density and achieve 5500m/s. Things like PETN will decrease dramatically in VOD as density falls below theoretical max of 1.6g/cc. Your PETN may only be going 5500-6000m/s if you are just packing powder without a binder.
