AND THERE'S MORE!! Mitch and wayne were probably two repressed queers, if you ask me. I mean, read between the lines. Oh, now don't breathe a word of what i have just told yer. It is not nice to gossip! it ain't!
What does film noir mean to people of low intelligence? absolutely nothing, that's what! I mean, could YOU see a dopey hillbilly redneck jerkobator coming out of a cinema and saying, "Gee,w hat a wonnerful fillum norr that sure is"? No, and neither can anyone of average intelligence! God that? Good! Now, did you see that Wayne-Mitchum movie where Wayne approaches Mitch WITH A HAND ON HIS WAIST? A WRIST, TO BE CORRECT! La Cage Aux follies?
I DID NOT LIKE THAT ANTI-NATIVE-AMERICAN PIECE WHERE HUNTER AND WAYNE ILL-TREATED THAT NATIVE LADY. THE WORD, SQUAW, MEANS LADY IN NATIVE AMERICAN LINGO. THAT MOVIE SEEMED TO SAY RACISM IS FINE.
@squirell1952 I know JF apologised, but to cut out incidents were Wayne and Hunter ill treated the Indian girl would not be telling the story.Do we want people thinking that the wild west was one great hippee love in?.American Indians and the settlers lived in an age were life was cheap and pollitical correctness were unheard of.To cut out incidents that we are discussing, would do the movie industry and the story of the wild west a great dis-service.
@squirell1952: : You need to exercise a more critical eye - this movie is saying the exact opposite - Ethan, the ultimate racist, is left at the end as he appeared at the beginning - all alone, with only his hatred. No doubt you'd be a bit racist, too, if you had to live with the threat of attacks that left your loved ones dead. Both Ethan & Scar portray that point of view. It was not an easy or simple time or place to be alive. Read up on the history of the place and times.
@squirell1952 He may have apologized but he didn't mean it. They were portrayed poorly in the eyes of John Wayne in the film because John Waynes character isn't a good guy. The desert is portrayed as a crewel place and the first and last scene is him coming from the desert and leaving the desert. Learn some film noir.
Absolute best film John Wayne & John Ford ever made; Best western ever made also; the critics are never up to judging film like they ought to, this should also have won Oscars for BEST : ACTOR, DIRECTOR & film of 1956
The top directors of the 20th century ALL hail this as THE best, & that there was never a better part played by any actor in any movie
The critics judged Duke's politics, not his movies, & they were all left leaning PC pantywaists DUKE WAYNE was/ is the finest Actor we ever had
Not the best film with the duke in it, in my opinion, but still a worthy one. Found this in a pile of boxes on VCR the other day. I remember recording it at 6 years old, watching it and losing it for 7 years. Found it just yesterday. Cried with happiness at finding it.
Duke was great in this movie, but I believe his own favorite of all his movies was "The Quiet Man." My favorite of his Westerns was "The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance." In it, he doesn't seem to be doing a self-caricature, as he does in some.
I would argue that this is without doubt the greatest of American westerns. The layers of this film can be peeled like an onion. Ethan, the Confederate who likely entered Maximillian's service in Mexico, the brother who loves his brother's wife, the Indian-hating fanatic who determines to kill Debbie -- yet she is saved by his redeeming love (is she his daughter by Martha?). I first saw this film in 1956, and I could not let it go. John Ford's masterpiece.
A masterpiece of 20th century cinema. I personally rate this higher than Gone With The Wind. The acting and pacing of the movie is sheer perfection. The camerawork is spectacular. I first saw this when I was 9. Now 53 years later it still stirs up great emotion in me.
First time I sew this film was at a drivein Bolton's Landing Lake George NY, Sept 1961. This film made an impression on me...I was 10. I'm certain the deeper psychological elements made had little impact and so I'm left thinking it was Ford's visuals, Steiner's powerful music, and Wayne that left an indelible imprint. This film's complex themes of love, hatred, racism, sexism, love of family, duty and honor, and its cinematic excellence keep me coming back.
It is no longer politically correct for kids to play cowboys, cowgirls, & indians, unless, of course, the cowboys are finding their feminine side, the cowgirls are tough wagonmasters, and the indians are successful casino operators...

@rigbymauser do you really think this is the greatest western?? personally, it's not in the same league as "stagecoach" and "the shootist" but each to his/her own
So many great memories, I'm only 41 but thanks to my late dad, I was introduced to Mr John Wayne early in life. We wont have the likes of him ever again.
They cannot make movies like this any longer because there are no longer any men to make them, or believably act in them. How can you take seriously anyone lisping "Saddle Up!"
Maybe they will have to use women in the former male roles since women today seem to think they are men without penises.
Today's Hollywood would have to add lots of blood and guts. And the Duke would have to show his tender, feminine side. They would have a cowgirl take charge and slam beers. And, of course, there could be no moral
John Ford's masterpiece. John Wayne's greatest performance. And the score is almost as beautiful as the movie. "Lets Go Home, Debbie."

From 0:51 to 1:25 is the tune of the Confederate song "the Bonnie Blue Flag," perhaps in reference to Ethan's being a Confederate Veteran?

@noblefailure That and the clip from "Lorena" right before it -another song popular among Johnny Rebs.
