she is sooo full of herself. That interview was unprofessional, boring, stupid, and Mark looked completely bored, and un-interested. Remember "You have to ask a question" & "I didnt burn them, that is a lie" and she went to a crowd member to prove him wrong. What kind of uncomfertable bullshit was that.
"mistake for coming to a dev. conference"? wow! She'll never be at another tech/hacker con again. I'm a reporter, too, but on the off chance I would interview someone I knew personally I would disclose it and just try extra hard not to be too chummy and talk about inside stuff that listeners don't care about. It's really tough to do and this is why it is unwritten rule in journalism that it is sort of a conflict of interest to interview your friends. She should've passed on that interview.
Keynotes always suck. They're pissweak cock stroking excercises to get the whole room used to the idea that they spent several hundred dollars to be there.
One more thing, I created my comment in a harsh manner as a way of giving the audience some of their own medicine, showing themwhat cruel judgement is like. I will clarify my point next time for sure. Guess it worked after reading your comment. Oh and btw, I have experience the real world and I do realize their are other countries ,etc in this world. I never said otherwise. Take care and have a great day. I am off to experience the real world and read tech writing from other countries.
obviously Barrington you should read my comment more closely. I never claimed America is the only country writing on this. My comment was that she is one of the youngest successful tech writers. Just so you know. As for planning it, perhaps not the best choice of words but it is clear many walked in with a bad attitude. I am glad she states her mind. You do, are you denying her the same rights? Rampant sexism at its best.
I don't like her EVEN MORE now. If she was honest and humble about how poorly she interviewed I would have respected that. But her trying to blame the audience for how poorly she performed is bloody unacceptable.
Flirt less and ask real questions. We're really not interested in what YOU get constantly or what YOU think Mark talks about. Just ask the damn questions or leave your sit to someone else.
I doubt Zuck was really "upset" by anything other than her crap interviewing style. It's pretty bad when he has to explain to her that she has to ask questions in an interview.
The audience may have been unduly harsh in their reactions to her. But, like in the "Zuck" interview, she comes across as elitist and arrogant and implies the audience wanted the wrong information; which begs the question, for whom was she doing the interview?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Wow, you are the most bitter bunch of losers! They planned this because people don't like a young, smart, beautiful woman being successful. The old addage of no one likes the prettiest girl in the room. She is the most successful and youngest woman writing on tech and geeks are jealous of her and Mark. People hate smart, beautiful people. Quit hiding behind geeky blogs folks! Get out and experience life like the rest of us. You can still blog etc without being a tool like most of you!
'they planned this' ?? How to fuck would you know! People have a right to write comments on here thats the point duck fuck. This woman was clearly flirting in the interview and was most interested in the money surrounding facebook, nothing else. Also she is not the most successful woman wrtitnig on techs/geeks America is not the only country in the world u complete retard. U do know there are bigger countries? Or have you not gone out and experienced the 'real world'?
"Like... I'm one of the only women reporting on tech."
No, actually you aren't. Thankfully, reporters like Amber MacArthur, Veronica Belmont, and Molly Wood are there to keep it from looking completely hopeless for the female sex in tech reporting.
The reason why people were upset about her interview is that she just couldn't pull it together and ask anything that was interesting. The whole thing was just...so awkward to watch.
All the buddy buddy inside baseball stuff was uncalled for. The heckler voiced the frustration of the crowd. She was flirting and giggling like a school girl. For all the long winded pros, she asked nothing. Take some responsibility for this trainwreck of an interview.
group of people in the back? try the majority of the audience. it was meant to be an interview not a one on one flirt session to promote your book. you seriously write for business week?
She's on here giving a thumbs down to anyone talking shit on her. Pathetic.
It's really funny how she's trying to desperately save herself in this video, blaming it on the crowd, and of all people, Mark himself. This will not blow over Sarah, you'll forvever be known as the dumbass who blew the Zuckerberg interview
"Like, I'm one of the only women reporting on tech." - Sarah Lacy
So should we be more appreciative, or is it okay to call for someone less flighty and vapid? Tech geeks are a prickly bunch, but it's Lacy's fault she didn't grasp her audience. Especially bad form for her to heckle back and get defensive. Did Cosmo Kramer's blowup teach us nothing?
DENIAL DENIAL DENIAL. So many people think their shit doesn't stink, but we can all smell it. Businessweek should drop her and bill her for all the bad PR she continues to spew with her arrogant mouth.
During the interview and this interview you talk like a 14yo bimbo. What is this bitches skill or trade? Sucking dick? Shes certainly not a journalist, thats for sure.
She is in denial. I am a creative person and not a "developer" and watched the interview from the simulcast room at SXSW. Unfortunately, I left before the booing started, because she was so neauseating. I was so happy to hear about her misfortune later and that people spoke up. Sitting in that interview was a waste of time. I got NOTHING out of it. I wonder who these morons she is talking about who got a lot out of it. She is no "fall guy" as she meniotned. She is an idiot.
Not as easy as it looks? She would have been better off just bringing a list of questions that were user submitted. Epic fail. As soon as she said that at the keynote I was saying ok then open the mic up for questions.
What is BusinessWeek thinking??? Sarah Lacy's lack of professionalism and sense of self-importance is staggering. "One of the only women reporting on tech . . ." Is she kidding? I am embarrassed for her and BusinessWeek. This is a sad example of journalism.
Damn she's an idiot and I wish she would change professions! It's unfortunate most of all for BusinessWeek. Zuckerberg thought she was a complete moron.
BTW when you spend as much as we did to get into these interviews, workshops, etc, you bet the audience will be pissed if somone is giving a shitty interview that would be in a high school paper.
You may be able to blog lady, but your interview talents are lacking.
I am completely shocked at how she conducted her self. This is one of the worst interviews I have seen in my life. It was embarrassing watching her laugh uncontrollably and conduct herself inappropriately. Aside from the "rough interview", she then goes and uses profanity and attacks the audience in a clip from after the show. As a reader of Business Week, I am surprised that employees act in this manner.
ok answer me this please, if you discuss what questions your gonna ask beforehand, how can it possibly be a fair interview? i thought that was called censorship. try it next time without agreeing questions beforehand and get their real responses !!!!! be a journalist not a repeater !!!!!!!
She is a perfect example of why journalism shouldn't be considered a major in college. Her SNL meets journalism style doesn't work and is annoying. Go work at a corn dog shack Sarah.
she probably "gets this constantly" because she constantly sucks at what she does. sarah, get a clue: they're not criticizing your interview because you're female, they're flogging you because your interviewing skills SUCK.

She was patronizing & condescending twds Z & seemed to think SHE was the star of the show: THE JOURNALIST who gets to interview THE FACE of FB. At the end, she continued the train by acting on visibly hurt feelings w/ more immature behavior - refusing ppl Qs b/c they heckled. The best course of actn might've been to apologize for whatever reason we were displeased, dropped it & continued w/ Q&A WITHOUT incessant saracstic comments on her 'awful interview' & 'poor journalist has hard job' angle.
whereas men get showered with accolades, titles, promotions and money for being full of themselves and self-promotional, when a woman does it the crowd just can't fucking wait to hate on her
Lacy lacks all understanding of why her interview was a trainwreck. She was grotesquely unprofessional in attempting to appear "chummy" w/ Z. She was too caught up trying to be "cool" to the hip Tech crowd & underestimated the level of respect & professionalism we expected. She opened w/ a story on how nervous he was when they 1st met & called him out on sweaty pit stains. She flirted, twirled hair, giggled like a schoolgirl - her body lang. was like she was at a bar picking up MrHotYoungThang.
It's also a mystery why she would attend a developer conference and yet on Twitter she admits her lack of interest in the subject matter.
Here's a direct quote: "apparently I just don't get excited enough abt api's" Then don't go to these conferences and act like you know what you're talking about!
As a reporter she should have at least prepare questions and familiarize herself with the culture, the audience, and the whole point of the venue before opening her mouth. A WTF moment.
Sarah Lacy is what the industry calls a poseur, a scene whore, or a media whore. She has a huge lack of technical interest but tries to be a part of a scene and get attention -delusional & self-absorbed notwithstanding.
Hard to believe that one who claims to be a journalist/writer/reporter could lack analytical skills and any ability to read an audience. I witnessed Lacy's utter lack of professionalism. The audience grew increasingly irritated as Sarah put herself at the center of the interview with a frequency that paralleled the flapping of a hummingbird's wings. Can't imagine reading her new book after she proved to have no understanding of Web2.0, her audience or SXSW.
Who the hell is this woman? She's really full of herself. I missed the terrible interview but caught it here on youtube and am sooo glad I missed it now! Wow, what a colossal failure. That interview was not interesting at all. Talk about a snooze fest. zzzzzzzz
nah she talks but she only seems inquisitive because she has no idea to begin with, and if you replace assertive with self obsessed you would be closer. She acts like some spoilt Schoolgirl not an adult in a job that requires professionalism.
Spinning. It's because it is a "Developer" crowd. "Some one like Mark doesn't talk about API's" (coding wasn't the focus of the crowd) "I'm the fall guy" "I'm one of the only women reporting...I get this all the time"
"It's the price of being high profile" "Main stream press respects you"
"The people that publicly attack someone don't realize how it hurts someone" (She attacked the audience during and after!?!)
With this...why would you trust Sarah Lacy's book to be truthful?
wow, career suicide.. ill find it surprising if this narcissistic attention mongor's amazon ranking proceeds.. at least take blame when you're at fault
Shocking. I thought maybe people had overreacted a little, but alas, no!
The self-promotion, the hair twirling, then swaying of her legs, the drawing of circles on the arm of the chair with her index finger. Fuck, I was expecting her to start rubbing herself off at any moment.
Inept doesn't even begin to describe her incompetence. She was clearly plugging her book and trying to show some strange personal relationship with Mark. He was clearly uncomfortable in the "interview". She needs to learn that doing her job well will raise her profile and gratuitous self-promotion makes for reactions like the one she received.
I have seen Mark Zuckerberg getting interviewed by his own venture capitalist, and even that produced a much more interesting conversation and more "breaking news" than what she did (or rather claims). Learn to moderate an audience and keep the upper hand in interviewing people before labeling yourself good at it and say that "it went great" out of the blue when in reality it was a disaster.
can somebody tell me what the fuck she did? i don't want to sit down and listen to the whole interview especially when everyone is labeling it as disaster. was she supposed to ask "tough" caught-you-in-the-headlight type question fromt he Facebook founder or she was just whoring herself to get him off easy?
ok....ay. at first, when I read the trail of negative comments, I thought to myself, here we go with these paid corporate monkeys hammering an interviewer who is seeking to expose Facebook's hidden agenda... Boy was I wrong -- not a few ft wrong but a whole galaxy off. 3 minutes into this flirtatious mindless rambling and I am about to punch my monitor. Is she playing in a bad sitcom eps. or just ridding on her self-induced egotistical 15-min high? This was just down right atrocious.
I am not a developer and none of the people around me were. We were all disgusted by her not Zuck. She made herself the interview and seemed to be denigrating him throughout it while talking herself up. She lost the crowd within 10 minutes -- and everyone got more frustrated as it went on. She was clueless and by 48 minutes they exploded but it wasn't developers and it wasn't just Americans. I was surrounded by people from Europe and Canada and they were in disbelief about how poor she did.
She has as much of a clue of what was going on in the audience as she had on the stage. However, she did Mark a favor - because let's face it - he wasn't brilliant either but no one is talking about that. And I can't say as I blame them.
"someone like Mark doesn't talk about APIs, he talks about company strategy"
Uh... The room was full of all the people who use those APIs? And I'm pretty sure the moderator doesn't get to decide what the billionaire creator of the biggest social networking platform has to say.
The interview had so much potential. It's too bad she's a shameless self-promoter that turned the focus on herself rather than initiate informative discussion. She continually brought up his age seemingly in an effort to make him feel uncomfortable and she picked apart his mannerisms. If I were Facebook's VP of Comm., I would be furious that Zuckerberg was put in that position by an interviewer that clearly had her own agenda. And she says that this is the result of being "high profile"?
The audience turned on her because she hi-jacked the interview and made it about herself. Watch the video when it's posted and see for yourself. SXSW has had big names as keynote speakers for years -- it's just that in those sessions, the interviewer focused on the person being interviewed .. not themselves.
You should have just admitted you fucked up and left it at that but you don't. You instead try and put the blame on everyone else except yourself.. the crowed, mark, hecklers. You even get a second chance to explain and clarify and you shoot yourself in the foot. Nice!
[Continued] Instead you told stories about how Mark gets all nervous and sweaty and can't say more than three words in an interview. That's why it sucked Big Fat Donkey Balls. That's why the audience got a little bit rude and a whole lot pissy. We wanted some meat to the interview -- not a fluffernutter sandwich.
No dear. SXSW has had Malcolm Gladwell, Dan Rather, and Henry Rollins as keynote speakers. 'High-profile' was not the issue.
The issue was that you weren't asking real and serious questions about things like Beacon. You didn't ask about Facebook's repeated privacy fuck-ups. Or the Facebook backlash and community revolts. Or their broad licensing terms on member content.
I was there -- we weren't laughing with her and Mark at the beginning, we were laughing AT them. They both sucked, they were both awful and frankly, if other quote unquote, high profile individuals, don't want to come at SXSW in the future because Zuckerberg had his feelings hurt - frankly, fuck them.
She's the kind of woman who ends up in ditches with matted hair and a missing sock, just for being an irritating bitch.

she said "like" more than any journalist should be allowed to

Who the hell is this woman? She's really full of herself. I missed the terrible interview but caught it here on youtube and am sooo glad I missed it now! Wow, what a colossal failure. That interview was not interesting at all. Talk about a snooze fest. zzzzzzzz
candy69200201 3 years ago
lol - you may hate her, and find her annoying...
but you have to admit, she's an inquisitve - assertive reporter. and that's good
itsbusinessbaby 3 years ago
nah she talks but she only seems inquisitive because she has no idea to begin with, and if you replace assertive with self obsessed you would be closer.

Shocking. I thought maybe people had overreacted a little, but alas, no!
The self-promotion, the hair twirling, then swaying of her legs, the drawing of circles on the arm of the chair with her index finger. Fuck, I was expecting her to start rubbing herself off at any moment.

She is clearly incompetent. Maybe she should have interviewed Paris Hilton...???
kozsak 3 years ago 2
Inept doesn't even begin to describe her incompetence. She was clearly plugging her book and trying to show some strange personal relationship with Mark. He was clearly uncomfortable in the "interview". She needs to learn that doing her job well will raise her profile and gratuitous self-promotion makes for reactions like the one she received.
rpetty 3 years ago

Absolutroy 3 years ago 5
She has as much of a clue of what was going on in the audience as she had on the stage. However, she did Mark a favor - because let's face it - he wasn't brilliant either but no one is talking about that. And I can't say as I blame them.
whe73 3 years ago
She gives competent female journalists a bad name...and I guess the profanity was supposed to make her hip and edgy. She is neither.
rcireland 3 years ago 8
"someone like Mark doesn't talk about APIs, he talks about company strategy"
Uh... The room was full of all the people who use those APIs? And I'm pretty sure the moderator doesn't get to decide what the billionaire creator of the biggest social networking platform has to say.

Who the hell is Sarah Lacy?
ShyzerDOTcom 3 years ago 7
The interview had so much potential. It's too bad she's a shameless self-promoter that turned the focus on herself rather than initiate informative discussion. She continually brought up his age seemingly in an effort to make him feel uncomfortable and she picked apart his mannerisms. If I were Facebook's VP of Comm., I would be furious that Zuckerberg was put in that position by an interviewer that clearly had her own agenda. And she says that this is the result of being "high profile"?
rblnick 3 years ago 7
Trying to portray yourself as a victim because you happen to be a woman is BS, and offensive towards women.
MisterRedlegs 3 years ago 12
I agree. She says how ever blog rips her and she gets this all the time. Well, maybe its because she stink ALL THE TIME!
Sara, please, try to lose the valley girl talk. Its like nails on a chalkboard.
mikeycav 3 years ago 2
The audience turned on her because she hi-jacked the interview and made it about herself. Watch the video when it's posted and see for yourself. SXSW has had big names as keynote speakers for years -- it's just that in those sessions, the interviewer focused on the person being interviewed .. not themselves.

RedStarr2121 3 years ago 3
You should have just admitted you fucked up and left it at that but you don't. You instead try and put the blame on everyone else except yourself.. the crowed, mark, hecklers. You even get a second chance to explain and clarify and you shoot yourself in the foot. Nice!
@Khunipie
Sexy? She's an opinionative, know it all little witch.
RedStarr2121 3 years ago 7
[Continued] Instead you told stories about how Mark gets all nervous and sweaty and can't say more than three words in an interview. That's why it sucked Big Fat Donkey Balls. That's why the audience got a little bit rude and a whole lot pissy. We wanted some meat to the interview -- not a fluffernutter sandwich.
tiffanybbrown 3 years ago 5
Or their broad licensing terms on member content.
tiffanybbrown 3 years ago 9
As a journalist, she probably shouldn't curse in a post-interview. And its nice she can interpret MZ's feelings.
