This song moves back and forth from anger and despair like none other I have ever heard. My favorite part is when it fleetingly moves back to love ("Who's gonna love you....") before finally falling back into despair. God damnit i love this song.
At 4:26, all I can envision is him sitting in that desolate cabin, recording this song and just breaking the dead silence of the woods with that wolf cry. Simply amazing.
I think the live performance by Bon Iver and Birdy's cover are pretty close as far as intensity goes. If I had to pick I'd say justin Vernon wins out.
@bezmolvie Unfortunately, you come off as a 13 yr old in your comments and you don't even realize it. Maybe keep your insults to yourself next time. That was a great performance.
@archifiable well i am sorry if that hurt you so badly. but i see no insult in the word "overrated". it does not mean his music is bad, it just means that i think that there are artists who are way better than him, yet they are not as much "talked about", because "gray's anatomy" did not use their song. plus i simply stated my opinion, and i see no reason for you to try to prove to me i am wrong. again, i am sorry if that offended you.
@DenisLD@bezmolvie I guess asking someone if they are a 13 yr old is a compliment these days. You never insulted me or even offended me by expressing your opinion. You belittled your own intelligence with an immature comment.
@Chrisinti no no! i know the lyrics, i'm not that stupid. look at his chest, when the camera moves upwards, he has a tattoo... unless it's hair or some shit.
I love this version with the introduction by Jools, because it's so fun to see how they all have no clue about the bomb that Justin was about to drop on them. you don't get over a performance like this. it's one of those performances they teach about in music classes and people tell their grandkids about.
@jszczepaniak Much as I love the Bon Iver album, I can't help but feel your comment is just a little disingenuous. Jools might come across as he does, but he's a genuine muso and has played on pieces just as poignant in their own way. His talent is bringing non-mainstream artists (such as Bon Iver) to the mainstream audience - audience members such as Roland Revron are there to show that you don't have to be elitest to enoy (or be introduced to) great music.
@meercatuk I love Jools Holland! He's not only talented at bringing new, good music, but he's an excellent musician in his own right. Trust me, I mean no offense toward him or his guests. It's just that they're going along with their witty, light banter, and then Justin drops this heavy performance. I watch Later... alot, and many of the performances (even the good ones) are pretty light and pleasant.

There will be no other performance that will ever top this on Jools. Emotionally, lyrically, musically. It has everything.

its so funny whenever he pauses in the song the audience is so rivieted. You can tell they were blown away and not expecting him to be so damn good.
