  • Mean as hell on a tractor trailer truck..

  • You didnt bother to find one of the remaing RS5T's?

  • i think it

  • Is it me or does NS use the loudest and most intimidating horns that exist xD

  • How bout' Conrail?

  • hey can you do BNSF too???

  • Nice video! my favorite was the p135r24 on NS 9349

  • I remember when I lived in Florida along the FEC and when NS run-through locomotives were first introduced. You didn't have to be at the tracks to see the black locomotives to know NS was coming through town, you could hear those high pitch horns a couple miles away and already you know what was going to come through soon.

  • I WANT TO LIVE IN USA!!!!!!

  • @pedropp222 where u from?

  • I get to listen to this all day as i live near the NS ex WLR east of Elkhart, Ind. :-)

  • they sound very dramatic, are u sure they didnt use these in old hollywood movies?

  • You're kidding, right?

  • @CSXno601 no im not kidding, im taking about sound effects, not about the facts that old movies are full of these sounds...sounds abit like an old harmonika

  • I like the P5 even if some of them do sqeal.

  • Generally speaking, any Nathan P5 on NS is on an ex Southern Railway unit.

  • Second train is an undeniably ex Southern Railway Nathan P5 horn....love that sound.

  • ok i was wrong at 4:36.

now at 5:11 (forground horn) thats were its at!

  • I personally dislike K5LLA's, but I can understand that it's shrill/bold sound can be attractive.

  • @CSXno601 indeed it is. in the lehigh vally, PA (were i live) that kind of horn is most commen to us . unforchunitly we rarely ever see SD70ACe's but o'well, its more of the AC4400's and SD70mac's that we see espeshaly were i am in the lehigh vally.

we have seen some but not alot only a few SD70ACe's

  • the thoroughbred has some good horn stuff!- thanks for posting

  • love the P5 on the ns 3324!

  • at 4:36 thats were its at the beast of all horns

  • I thoroughly agree!

  • ah notin like NS horns

  • Comment removed

  • My grandma and grandpa live in the rural area not far from a NS railtrack I just love when it sound its horn in a far distance that u can hear the horn echo :)

  • do you work for ns

  • No.

  • now thats the kind of horn that means GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY!!!!

  • I've lived in Altoona, PA for all of my 20 years on this earth, and I still love listening to the train horns. I'm not a big railfan or anything, but Altoona has so much railroad related stuff it's ridiculous. The Juniata shops, Horseshoe Curve, the railroaders museum, the "boxcar graveyard", the Gallitzin tunnels, all the old historic infrastructure, etc.

I go shooting back in the woods near the curve, and there are HUGE man made waterfalls and tunnels dating back to the 1800s. Awesome stuff.

  • Altoona is a great area to catch trains! I'm currently typing this response to you from a computer in Dunlo, PA, which is up the hill from South Fork. It's a neat area, and the horns echoing off the mountains are magnificent. Thanks for your compliments!

  • @CSXno601

You know where else is an awesome ''spot''? It's not really official and known to everyone, but im Hamburg, New York, there is tons of CSX/NS action, and every once in a while, you get BNSF, UP, CN, CP, I've seen Conrail sd units too. I have a few vids at Rogers road, check 'em out!

  • I've been to the mainlines along Lake Erie tons upon tons of times, to many places including Hamburg. Trust me, I know how much of a nice spot it is.

  • @PossessedDonutz if your in new york how do you see BNSF and UP units?

  • I'm from Ohio, not New York, and have you ever heard of run-through power? We get it all the time on certain trains....

  • @CSXno601 no i havent but i just wasnt sure so i thought i whould ask

  • @Pyro4709 ever here of leased power or interchange trains

  • @Pyro4709 ever hear of leased units or interchange trains

  • @mrstonelight no i have heard of leased power but never run through power.

  • The third train sounds like the CSX that runs by my school everyday.

  • 4:54 doesn't sound like a K5LA.....maybe a bell is out?

  • When you say the sound clips match the pictures do you mean that said horn is from the engine pictured?

  • Yes.

  • @CSXno601 Nice train horn sounds. The first one sounds like a Amtrak train.

  • @CSXno601 i like the K5 on 2528

  • Not as haunting as those old N&W steamers.

There are people in the UK that are horn enthusiasts too. They love those two toners...But the new horns are way too loud and not so differant to each other like they were on the older trains before minimum standards came out.

  • NS has some good-looking power, too. I live close to the Mingo Junction-Conway, PA "River Line", and the black and white NS power sometimes reminds me of the Penn Central era-much better looking than Conrail blue.

By the way, I love the looks of the high-nose EMD's, although they are kind of rare here.

  • Nice Shave and a Haircut at 5:38

  • love the horn at 0:46

  • ns has all shitty K5LA reversed chime horns...that suck.....leslie horns on the EMD units pwn.

  • I personally like the K5LA horns on NS. The K5LAR24's on CSX are nice too. I'll have to do a Leslie video in the future. I like the RS3L, and some RS5T's.

  • Here in TN, we rarely see or hear BNSF engines. Recently one was leading and I was surprised at how pretty the horn was. It sounded 'grand'. The unit number was 37-something.

  • I have worked in this industry 30 years. Run trains on UP, BNSF and several shortlines. I am constantly amazed you guys have a 'horn fetish' going on.

I'm not knocking it. I just find it interesting that outside of observing one is louder or shriller or sicker than another, to me it's just an instrument to make noise.

Of course my wife says that about my stratocaster so whom am I to rant.

Again, not knocking you guys. I just find it interesting.

  • Believe it or not, I am not even a horn fan. I just posted this video for the horn fans.

  • They're nice to see on the NS High Noses out in Fostoria. They're always something to look forward to.

  • As long as it's ex SR units, only. The P5's would get old after a while.

  • NS 9590 the K5LA sounded AMAZING!

  • The K5LA on 9085 sounded more like a CSX horn. I agree it's oddly tuned. Also, nice salute from 2770!

  • Lol you bet I heard a CSX horn like 9085 here in Hamburg a little. check it out on my channel

  • i dont like a lot of norfolk southern horns ,i like the lower pitched horns

  • Cool! NS and my railroad (FEC) both have good K5LLAs and RS3Ls!

  • Very hard core

  • NS does have a lot of beuatifal horns!! Like the P5,S3L,K5LA, and the S5T!! I'm surprised there aren't any Leslie horns in the video!

  • Leslie's just aren't my thing. Plus, I didn't have any good Leslie audio to put into the video. I would gladly put RS3L's in.

  • I see, your more of a Nathan fan like me!!

  • Most conrail units do have RS3L horns

  • Nice toots at 3:02

  • was NS 2690 saluting u?

  • Yes - at Alliance, OH

  • I agree, but is it me or is coal trains and double stack trains getting to DAM LONG.

  • When you live by highspeed mainlines where doublestacks do 70 MPH, like me, they can get longer and longer for all I care. I agree with you about the coal trains though.

  • u need conrail horn!

  • very nice I just saw NS 9884 down here outside Ft Worth Texas on a roarailer train there is a termanal here so I see these trains on the BNSF with usually all NS power

  • i see alot of csx trains pass in front of my house. alot people who i talk to on u tube, said' csx SUCKS . sometimes i might see a ns train, it very rare. because this a unionpacific line . even though ns has a line in new orleans, it is still very rare to see one. one time when i wasn't looking for atrain to pass by a VERY RARE CN train pass by VERY VERY FAST. i'm surrounded by diffrent lines. BUT I STILL SAY NS SOUND BETTER , NICE & LOUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Usually those that you talk to that say that CSX suck, are disgruntled employees, which wish they had better hours and pay. The others are railfans that have a beef with the railroad for no exact reason, except they try to agree with railroaders, or try to agree with their friends around them dislike CSX. I stay away from that. I know it is just a bunch of nonsense.

I have both CSX and NS mainlines around where I live.

  • I'd prefer NS though, because it seems theyre safer

  • Negative publicity. In all honesty, they are nearly the same in safety.

  • ah. but then i dont see why everyone labels CSX as so bad, but theyre cool guys, i know a engineer who works an aera near me in NJ, i get cab rdies n stuff O:

  • In the FRA 2005 and 2006 records, CSX came in third out of five class I railroads, in terms of safety, tie/track maintenance and derailments. UP, BNSF and KCS were worse than CSX. Kansas City Southern averaged 6.1 derailments every million miles. CSX only averaged about 2.8 - alot of people just spread crap. They don't know what they're talking about, so they join the choir and pick on CSX. They need to get their *insert here* straight.....

  • Nice Vid dude, but about the KCS being "worst" that CSX i dont thinks that true. I think they are safer than CSX.,and shoot there folks are a whole lot nicer about letting folks being in there yards. KCS is way safer than they use to be. Its been awhile since i've heard about KCS having and derailments. Sorry to rant but i had to protect my fav RR.

  • And I also like CSX and there K5HR24s,and NS with there K5LAR24s

    My Favs

    1.Kansas City Southern

    2.Norfolk Southern

    3.CSX

  • Believe what you wish, but I don't think the FRA would "lie" on Public Safety Records. This is all available to the public if you do some digging around.

Also, just because you don't "hear" about things on KCS, doesn't mean that they don't happen. Derailments, problems, injuries happen all of the time in railroad yards - but that hardly ever makes the newspaper, because it doesn't concern the public. It concerns the yardmaster, road foreman, the railroad, RJ Corman and the Hospital.

  • Continuing - as for them being "friendly", that doesn't matter to the FRA. In fact, they probably wouldn't like that, if anything. That is causing a bigger liability issue for the railroad, that could be avoided if individuals were kept off of railroad property.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, or anything, but in Safety, Derailments per 1 million Miles, track / tie replacement and signal replacement, CSX outdid them in all. Don't put CSX down, just because you like KCS better. I like KCS too.

  • Being "safer" ultimately means kicking railfans out of your yards. While I hate doing it, for safety reasons I always "Kick fans out of my yard".

Now, if they are nearby on public property I'll wave and if I have time answer questions.

Currently KCS is having some significant financial issues. Safety aside. My guess...they're gone in 3 years as a stand alone railroad.

    But, I've been wrong before.

  • I railroad out west, but I have to tell you that you're dead on.

Most of the railfans posting comments about safety or profitibility or track maintenance are just uninformed.

There are individuals on YT who trash UP management constantly but ignore the financials that prove them the most profitible railroad in NA in 2008.

It's ok to "root" for your favorite team. But it's amusing to watch railfans "join the choir of the uninformed".

  • I strongly agree with this! Especially like the person who responded to my last comment, defending KCS. Whether he believes me or not, doesn't matter, the Federal Railroad Administration has records and financials to show that CSX is in a safer / more reliable / profitable state than KCS.

  • Ha, I love diesel locomotive horns, they're always some funny collection of notes. The one at 0:52 is a half-diminished seventh chord on D.

  • It is somewhat fascinating. I, myself, and hardly knowledgeable at all about airhorns, but I know that there are some horn fans on here, so I made these. I may do a collection of Leslie horns in the future.

  • Awesome!!! Thanks

  • Whats the difference between a NS train horn and others i believe the 2nd horn sounds like what we have going by our house I have heard the k5la but this sounds much louder any help?CR304Wheelers see my vid!

  • I LOVE THAT NATHAN P135R24!!!!

  • S-Y-N-P-H-O-N-I-C. Dig the Dopppler shift.

  • i love the second one

  • do tribute to the buity of conrail quality horns

  • I may some day.

  • YAY!

  • Right now I don't think I have enough Leslie RS3L audio to make one. Down the road I might. I started a BNSF one, but never finished.

  • uhh ok

  • who you think sound the best, csx or ns ??????????? i personally like ns, they are really loud .

  • The Nathan K5LAR24 horns that CSX uses on their AC4400CW series might be my favorite horns. This followed by the Nathan K5LA used on Norfolk Southern C40-9W's.

  • I wonder if that oddly tuned K5LA on that 9085 unit might have been a former Conrail unit or just very badly out of tune

  • The Dash 9's were ordered by NS in the 1990's. The only GE widecabs that Conrail had were the C40-8W's, which on NS, are in the 8300-8400 number series. It must just be off tune.

  • yeno, I am a diehard BNSF fan, but i absolutely love NS's horns. Who couldnt?

  • Love the "odd" K5LA @ 3:15

  • NS 9085. I loved it. Overblowing 4A bell

  • 3:00-the death of a P5 horn lol

  • Great job, Rich... Man, there is no doubt NS rosters some damn good looking motors with some of the best sounding horns on rails. Well done.

  • Nice horns! it´s music to my hears. The Nathan K5LA is my favourite. Unforntunelly, I can't hear those sounds in Europe.

  • Nathan P135R24 has the best sound ever! Hands down! Older IC engines ran with those same horns. I think all the SD70's with the Spartan Cabs (1000 series)had them.

  • They still do have them! Awesome sound too!

  • Oh yeah, if they are smart, they will keep them and not put the Canadian tuned horns on them. You can't beat those P5's

  • at 0:48-1:02 is an older horn off one of the smaller engines its sounds more sick than good i know cause i live right next to the Norfolk Southern railway

  • Crazy Comment!!!!!

  • Great horn and metal sounds symphony! It was an awesome soundtrack.

Great pictures, but I think that a real movie can be a real good alternative to the beautiful music.

  • I have plenty where those came from. Check some of my train videos out sometime. :)

  • what kind of tarin horn is that at 0:48-1:02?

  • It is a Nathan P135R24.

  • what is wrong with Norfolk Southern

  • They could use a hint of color sometimes. :)

  • whats wrong with the current color scheme

  • every thing

  • you dont like the black and white color scheme

  • I will add my input by saying that the black/white gets majorly boring after a while. It's been to the point I have decided not to videotape or photograph them before. :)

  • ok now I understand

  • hey im askin if you could do a bnsf horn tribute

  • amen

  • Sorry for the late reply.

I was close to doing a UP and BNSF tribute, but I don't have enough footage of their horns to do a very successful video.

  • i like the horse design dont get me wrong but seeing black and white like alot it can get boring after a while ya know what im sayin

  • I agree who do you think has the best color scheme on their locomotives CSX Canadian Pacific BNSF NYSW Canadian National Kansas City Southern Union Pacfic I can tell you that CSX color scheme is eye catching

  • The KCS Southern Belle is nice. So is CP's Golden Beaver, and the CSX AC6000CW paint scheme.

  • the three you mentioned have great color schemes

  • i like csx dark future

  • csx no question and amtrak fase 5

  • I like the CSX colors

  • you left out the RS3L:( but good vid still.

  • NS has great sounding horns on their trains

  • yeah the prolly the loudest ones lol. my favorites are NS

  • they geat your attention

  • no they dont conrail did and bnsf andcsxdo

  • yeah so they all get your attention

  • pretty much but i hate norfolk southern

  • Pengapop - you'd get along GREAT with my engineer friend that works for the NS. :)

  • Great video!

  • I love the P135R24 horn and the P5LA horn on the SD-70 (60?)!

  • NS units 2501-2580 are EMD SD70 units. 6550-6716 are EMD SD60 units. I agree, I like the Nathan K5LA horns used on the SD70 series. They sound kind of strange, but I like them.

  • Impressive and beautiful, 5*. I wish BNSF and UP would use more of these horns.

  • I may do tributes to the UP and BNSF horns later on this year, once I get more audio of them.

  • I live the P135R24!!

  • straight music!! 5 stars!

  • at :53, whered u get the ppicture of the train?.....

  • I took it, just like all of the others. Only one in here (NS 9174) was taken by someone else - my friend Tim Sullivan. :)

  • noo i mean what state u take it in, looks awfully like where i go sometimes.

  • That is at North East, PA at the Cemetary Rd grade crossing looking west in the mid-afternoon.

  • I love P5A horns, didnt get those tell the take over 9 years ago

  • Why does the D9-40CW at 00:54 have a P5A horn???? I thought they had K5LA horns.

  • Some do, when the Nathan K5LA was out of stock.

  • those suck no leslies good audio though rare no 940cs

  • I happen to like Nathans better, and also, I had no good Leslie horn blows to put up on here. They were either "going away" or were distant, none really 'action-packed,' so to speak.

  • Love those types of horns.

  • I love the K5LA horns of the D9-40CW's and GP60's. They always put me to sleep.

  • Love NS horns,I love to hear them when I go to Inman Yard

  • very nice.

  • the most beautiful horns ive ever heard... GOD BLESS AMERICA AND ITS TRAINS

  • i see fostoria pics!

  • Yes you do! ;)

  • Man i love fostoria!! We go there as summer vacation and amn do we love it!

  • For train action, it isn't that bad, but for photo locations, it isn't the best. All in all, it is an average spot. I will be going there at the end of June 2008 with the Akron Railroad Club.

  • end of JUne sound liek around time i might be heading out thier...sometime this summer ill be going ... can't wait!

  • CSX doesn't have to many K5LA's anymore. But I caught one about 2 weeks ago with a K5LA. NS has more K5LA's than CSX. Great video.

  • You gotta admit that NS has the best horns of all the eastern roads; you've got Leslie S5Ts on ex-N&W, Nathan P5s on ex-SOU, Leslie RS-3Ls on ex-Conrail, and Nathan K5LAs on all their new power. Now that's variety!

  • I love the CSX Nathan K5LAR24 horns echoing through the mountains on slow, heavy coal drags.

  • man i dont know who to pull for, csx or norfolk southern, its such a big decision, but im gonna have to make it sometime soon!

  • Depends on how you look at it. :)

  • love the old n&w horn
