So he let the homeworld artists paint on an original? That sounds fairly odd and unnecessary, considering the existence of photo copying technology, especially for a video game company.
Lovely art. The colors are some of my fave's Roger Dean really captures the game. The ladder --wonder why the choice for a song??? A million answers I am sure. Isn't imagination wonderful. : -) Thanks for posting. Love to see when an artist is creating a work of art like this one. Very thrilling.Peace and Love!
I believe I read somewhere an anecdote about the naming of "The Ladder", whereby it refers to a gallery display of one of Yoko Ono's pieces of art. Apparently, the art piece consisted of a step ladder, which upon climbing to the top and looking straight above on the ceiling, one could read the simple, solitary word, "yes".
Don't know whether that is true, but it's the story I've heard, suggesting that piece of art as the inspiration for the name.
@stellarpod *****Hello and Happy New Year to you. Thanks for the reply, and bringing me to this lovely art work once again. It is so calming listening to Roger Dean talk as he touchs up on this beautiful painting. I needed the calmness of the scene. I am trying to connect bridges and dots to what is going on in this magnificent world, so very fitting that this should be sent my way. I thank you for the STORY you learned about "The Ladder." I know I love his work of art. Peace+ Love :-)
@stellarpod The story is correct. And the only reason that we know about this show of Yoko's is that was the night that Lennon met her for the first time. One more thing, there was a magnifying glass at the top of the ladder. You had to use it to read the very small "yes".
I actually have the packaging for the game Homeworld by Sierra and Relic, and even just now looked up Moby Games' cover art gallery for the game, and honestly see no sign of this painting anywhere. I think maybe the artist's pulling our legs, unless the painting was used for promotional artwork (as he said in the video).. besides the Yes album's cover, that is.
Regardless, the description on the right is inaccurate in saying it was used for the cover of the game.
If you liked that then I highly recomend picking up Views and Dragon's Dream! These books capture a lot of his work, from the earliest days to just recently. And your right, The Ladder is a great song!
The Ladder is a song? I thought it was an Album- the song that was inspired by the game is named after the game, if that's the song to which you refer. Though I do notice the track lists for The Ladder album do have 'The Ladder' in parentheses after that track's name of 'Homeworld', so I guess both apply...
I guess so, I'm not sure if the YES album "The Ladder" is the unoffical Homeworld soundtrack or what. The first song is titled Homeworld (The Ladder) and you can see all the clan symbols from the Homeworld game on the hinge side of the CD case so......
If it is, it's quite a modest way to do that. Hard to believe that was all 10 years ago, where has the time gone?
It's not, really. Just the one song was featured in the game, used during the end credits. That is rather neat that the Kiith emblems were featured on the album materials, though.
Hope I wasn't too troublesome with my wording- I was looking things up and amending to the comment as I went. I usually think of the song as 'Homeworld', so at first I had the reaction as with my first sentence...
I didn't play the game all the way through but I figured there were more Yes songs through out the game, silly me! Not much else is said of Homeworld in the CD pamphlet/poster but the CD is enhanced with a demo of the game.
I have tried to find what Mr. Dean is talking about, I never found any promotional image of this painting with spaceships in it. It might have been something done in the UK and real briefly.
BlueKyne: Indeed, I can't believe it's been a decade since Homeworld, too. And the graphics of the game are still cool (just imagine in 1999 trying to say that without smirking about some 8-bit Nintendo game in '89 lol)!
Doesn't like spaceships in his paintings... blasphemy.
