they made leaf green but not water blue because in japan blue was called green but when it came to america they changed it to blue. now with the new games they kept red the same but changed blue back to green. like the final fantasy games.

@KennethXEcker Well, see, it wasn't too big of a deal to change the name to "Pokemon Blue" bad in Gen 1, since there was barely any colour and sprite differences. If they changed it to "WaterBlue" or something of the sort, they'd have to make a new sprite and animation on the title screen. Also, they were able to obtain a drawing of Blastoise because they released a Blue version in Japan after Red and Green. This time, if they were to get a Blastoise for the boxart, they'd need to redraw it.

@aslietz actually, there was a pokemon blur version in japan. it's just that the originals were red and green, with blue being an upgraded remake that was the basis for the US red and blue versions

@aslietz Actually Blue version does exist in Japan. It was a remake of Green, but when they brought Red and Green to American they just made Green version Blue.
