Lovely ... but I'm a little bothered by sound being "off" from the visual, because it makes me question whether what I'm seeing is in fact what I'm hearing.
I have a L&C viola and play it regularly in orchestra pits. I generally like it a lot, though sometimes I struggle on the upper strings when vibrato and the instrument's natural vibration sometimes interfere with each other ... you just have to learn how to manage this.
Reviews of the violin weren't good 5 years ago ... did it change?
Okay, I am seriously considering buying one, I was just a little undecided because they seem to market their cellos and violas more than the violins..
well, it sounds good, and i don´t think 5k is too much for something like this... of course iw ould not buy it because wood is much more beautiful and warm. I play violin and I bought a viola only because it was so beautiful...
sooooooo expensive? who are you kidding? I've never found a violin with a sound I liked (other than this one, of course!) for under $7,500. Considering this violin's amazing sound, it's quite a bargain.
Definitely. This violin has such a fantastic sound, and is completely tough and strong to whatever life can throw at it. Every other violin I play just does not fill me with joy like the bright and volumous tone of the Luis and Clark Violin. I will post my recording of this soon!
i own the luis and clark viola ... and it's absolutely brilliant : )
i've had several instruments, but this is the only one that i can't wait to play every day. as for the money, when you consider the crazy prices some workshops are asking, $5,500 seems quite reasonable. the sound is incredible, plus you can play in the rain! haha
@roseinthepages you must be kidding about playing in the rain...I can't imagine how even a carbon fiber with natural horse hair can be played when it's wet..
@nhimcool haha, yeah, just kidding. i wouldn't want to play any string instrument in heavy weather. but i think a luis and clark can take a bit more of a beating than a traditional. the main body piece won't swell and warp with moisture. (which is great in the humidity! no tuning issues, for the most part.)
There is no comparison to my last violin, which was not all that great, and was wood, but I have played nice violins before, and this instrument has all the qualities that those had and more, namely the fact that it's impervious to the weather, and is pretty resistant to physical abuse.

5000 dollars is next to nothing for a decent violin. My teacher remortgaged her house to buy her violin...
