  • great song.. playing it at Schuylerville this year.

  • I play oboe in my Wind Ensemble, and this piece is amazing!!! I absolutely love it.

  • Is the low reed instrument thats accompanying the flute solo around the middle of the song a Bass Clairnet?

  • @leask8r yepp! I play bass clarinet :D

  • Played this my senior year for contest. I had the euphonium solo, such an awesome piece. Oh and we also had Charles R. Young come to my high school and give us a clinic on this song! The story behind this song is amazing!

  • @Cona1026

The words "song" and "piece" are not interchangeable. Songs, by definition, are written with the intention of principally featuring vocals. Although pieces may also contain vocals, instruments are overall the primary means of expressing the composition.

  • @Lithoxene

I was not aware of that, learn something new everyday I guess.. Thanks for the clarification :)

  • This was our opener my freshman year of marching band. We consider it a legendary show :D

  • Yeah, get some 'boners!!!

  • two people don't like music

  • i played this my junior year in highschool so last year lol and i LOVED it lol

  • This is a pretty bad ass song for a metallic alloy

  • @sean555551 Ahhhhh nerd jokes.....(:

  • Aww we played this song my senior year :) I miss band :(

  • playing this in my college. I swear the first time i heard tempered steel it sounded like it should be part of the musical Sweeny Todd or at least in the move. it fits soo well

  • the glockenspiel is completely overpowering the awesome b.ass clarinets!

  • Oh, wow, this song makes me miss high school band. We played "Tempered Steel" my sophomore and junior years. It's not an easy piece, but when it's done well, it's amazing. Go trumpets!

  • loved all the random time changes. :)

  • I play timpani, u guyz b jelly

  • @marschke77 Virgin.

  • @JorshesAborshes

    awww :(

  • MY sister played this for a high school band competition! they took home state!

  • needs more cowbell

  • This song needs a bassoon solo :P

  • The composer (charles young) lives about an hour and 1/2 away from me, and I got his input on my school's performance...lemme tell you, there is nothing more amazing than hearing the composer's input, especially when he thinks its amazing.

  • The Tuba part for me is harder than the 3rd Trumpet part

Never thought I would ever say that.

  • @buttzila1 3rd trumpet part is pretty easy

  • @GuardianofValhaven I rocked 1st trumpet (plus the 2nd trumpet solo part .. with first trumpet solo part) last year in my concert band! It was so much fun. Graduated now. :(

  • I'm pretty sure that this is performed by the University of North Texas Wind Symphony.

  • @ThinkMooInc yeah it is.

  • Friggin' sweet.

  • Who recorded this?

  • playing this for Marching Band.... this memorizing wise could take awile...

  • @Bacon0100 Haha, you're playing an arranged version, don't worry.

  • ahh i remember this song, none of us clarinets could tongue fast enough :(

  • i played this my freshman year in high school. it was EPIC

  • @mrmandude24 same here!!!

  • I love the flute solos in this song, it was so fun to play~ I'll miss playing this song with my band T.T

  • I will never forget this piece. Not because of the music -- although I do like it -- but for the elaborate story written on the tenor sax piece that featured an ostrich and a mouse.

  • Comment removed

  • It sounds like Warhawk.

  • my school's wind symphony played this for the winter concert at school..it was hard to get through the slow section being the only bass clarinet!!! lol

  • @mikeja008 that is TOO FUNNY my middle school band is playing it to, and our first chair tenors name is Michael, WEIRD. But he is always complaining about the second tenor who like, never plays, so it cant be you

  • Oh sweet repetition.

  • We're playing this for Honor Band next year with Molly on the Shore. I'm excited :D Haha

  • @EEcupcake94 Molly on the Shore was one of my favorite pieces back in high school. I played it my senior year for our first concert of the year. I'm a trumpet player, so it wasn't all too exciting for me personally, but it was an awesome song. Tempered Steel and Raging Machines were much more fun to play for me :D

  • i get nervous just listening to it. lol

  • I'm a tenor sax and my director is ordering this piece :o are there any solos for it? :D

  • @pietdepsi michael you are teh nub ;p

  • @nickcane6 stfu nick :p

  • Played this my freshman year. 7 pages of pure genius!

  • Played this on Tenor Sax...fun as hell.

  • @mikeja008 Im a tenor too, im glad im not the only one who had trouble with the low note duplets

  • My school's band will be playing this when we go to China in the end of May!!! Its EPIC

  • My middle school band is playing this!

  • It sounds too calm and quiet maybe bc thats a recording but shit when I played this in high school we sounded like a 500 person band we def rocked the sox of this piece lol

  • Alright, so we played this last year... Let me tell you, I hate this but I love this. We played it with our million percussionists. But that bass part on baritone saxophone, it is amazing. :) And while we still refer to this as the hell peace, it is fun. :) BUT HELL.

  • My band is playing this... it reminds me of a song you would hear in the background at Disney World. would also be a GREAT marching band piece if you ask me. :D

  • @LhSmB95 OMG A: THAT IS ARE MARCHING BAND PIECE B: WERE GOING TO DISNEY FOR MARCHING BAND THIS YEAR

  • @Bacon0100 my band is going to disney too XD can't wait.

  • South Miami Senior High did this as there marching show :] it was pretty kool!

  • Played this last year at Texas State Wind Ensemble. My school got nationally recognized for it.

  • please guys please...it's all about euphoniums! (just kidding nobody cares about them, evidence: the half-ass solo compared to the solos everyone else gets).

  • GO BASS CLARINETS!!!!! YOU RAPED THIS SONG (in the good way)

  • @sexybassclarinetist is there a good way to rape something?

  • @sexybassclarinetist You just made my year man! I never would've thought I'd find another bass clarinetist on youtube! btw did you get a chance to see the contrabass part?

  • My bands Wind Ensemble is playing this next Friday at the Chaffey Festival.

  • @49ers166 no way man I was at that festival and saw you guys. Nice job.

  • dr.young is comeing too my school next week!!(:

  • our director tried to make us sightread this O_O UGHHHH lol it was horrible. cool song though!

  • We had to play this for sightreading O_O raped our minds lol

  • @concertbandland @LtChapa361 Another great one is Raging Machines.

  • I know Charles Young. I take composition lessons from him.

  • As a tuba player playing this song who started on trumpet, it's fun to get to use a little bit of that upper range

  • Bass Trombone All The Way

  • my schools highschool played this last year....i was in 8th grade so i didnt get to play it.....it sounds so fun, i wish i could've played it

  • @theps3kid101 the same thing happened to me. kinda. a few years ahead played it. the seniors wanted to but when i was a freshman we couldn't do it... :(

  • We were playing this in HS and the chimes broke in the middle of the song. The dude spent the rest of the piece jamming on the marimba

  • I love this song. I play clarinet

  • I know that I have to play those solo's. but I've got major stage fright. :/

  • Tympani all the way! This piece was so much fun to play!

  • I am the first chair horn and all of those horn solos, I've got to play.

  • @DSfan56 when i first played them i failed

  • @raina2224 So did i..our wind ensemble band just played this song today... it was hard..

  • Bari sax is the way to go on this piece.......finally we get something that actually requires practicing! this is by far my favorite concert band song I have ever played.

  • @saxchick2013 BEST BARI SAX PART EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR :) I play bari and it was crazy, but it was hard to get some of the low notes out constantly on my bari, but I still played it.

  • @westiepup369 yea i know, it must be even harder for you, but im a tenor and it was ridiculously hard to get those low notes out at that tempo

  • We're playing this song for festival in Wind Ensemble... I'm 1st F. Horn... the solo's are great but I keep freezing up. Its so humiliating, and I'm practicing every night. Does anyone have any suggestion of what I should do? I have the solo's down by memory... any advice would be helpful. :'(

  • this song is available on itunes. director Eugene Miglario of the North Texas Wind Symphony.

  • Most fun I ever had playing bari sax was with this song. :D

  • @idontknowkayla I play Bari too! We are playing this song for Solo's and Ensemble's. I'm get myself a new Bari cause the school ones suck (there is 3, all messed up). I can't get anything below a G out and anything higher then a high D. I'm gonna get the new one when the snow clears up here. XP But I totally love this song, I own a Alto so i practice on it at home. So much fun!!!!!! XD

  • @hannibaltheundeadcat at least the b flats are short and spread far throughout the piece, and they're no too bad once you get into the music

  • extremely tiring on the lips especially when its last in the lineup for a concert, but nevertheless its an incredible piece

  • This is one mother of a piece, I've played it in band, 1st trombone part looks like a freaking novel

  • @tophertbone the endless high b flats kill me.

  • @tophertbone 1st trumpet is 6 pages for me. So difficult and challenging and yet so, so fun. It really pushes you to get better. It's great.

  • Love it. Wish we would play it. Go Clarinet!

  • What recording is this?

  • I've met Dr. Charles Younge before. In fact our HS Wind Ensemble just proofed his latest peice. It's not published yet, but it's a blast. It will be making its world premier in January!

  • my directors hate thispiece so much its hilarious

  • @scubareece Do you know why?

  • Well my band could never play it. We screwed up our entrances so much, the director threw the score to the ground, stomped into his office, and slammed the door.

  • Played this two years ago, had the trombone solo too. This was a very fun piece.

  • Played this last year, my junior year, at this tempo. It took so much time to pull together & it was quite tiring on the lips but you feel accomplished after tackling a piece this challenging. (:

  • we're playing this right now in honor band at my school! i love playing piccolo for it but its soo high and i really want to play the flute solo in the dream sequence it's so cool!

  • I was a senior and our band attempted to play this, most defiantly not at this tempo, haha; awesome song, but you'd need dedicated players if you want to preform a concert or something. cause half our class could have cared less about doing anything. :P

  • played this high school! it was the ultimate work out on our lips!! :)

  • i know a high school that plays this for their marching band show.

  • @compow45 goleman?

  • @Bassoonater yes yet there theme doesn't really make sense

  • @compow45 they always bring wind ensemble music to their marching band season, I believe they once did firebird or was it the planets...

  • @Bassoonater well they got all superiors except colorguard at FBA so.. they pull it off just well lol

  • Were playing this on high school I love the tenor part

  • @drthv8rcevenson minnesota my school went there last year

  • we played this 2 years ago and i played triangle but my band teacher told me to learn the whole marimba part in 1 day or he'd kick me out of band. and i learned it and played it all with 0 notes missed.

  • my high school band is going to Steven's Point to play a concert with Charles Young this spring

  • when can you EVER hear the tambourine over the rest of the entire band like that?

  • I'm lucky to have this guy be my theory/ aural skills etc..professor at UWSP.

  • My High School band might play it for our fall concert, its such a fun piece

  • Can't wait until my band plays this later this year! :D

  • we played this my senior year of high school, I had the Euphonium solo, it was one of my favorites. My band also had the honor and privalage of having Charles R. Young come out and do a clinic with us on this song. The story behind the song is truly inspiring and powerful.

  • @Cona1026

Where could I find this truly inspiring and powerful story?

  • Playing this song this year, sophomore year of high school(: It's really fun!

  • Comment removed

  • I was only a freshman in high school when we played this and it sounded just the same. :)

  • We are playing this as our marching show this year! Except it sounds different! Lol!

  • haha gay

  • if anyone is interested in seeing a marching band interpretation of this, there's one of my profile. The show is entitled "Heavy Metal"; the opener of the show features this piece.

  • In our band, we played this song at concert festival. We are a brand new band at a new school. We made perfect scores and the judges were very impressed. It made me so proud of us! I was the trumpet soloist.

  • The Chesnee High SChool is MArching this this year! our theme was metal!

  • This sort of reminds me of Equus by Eric Whitacre
