  • Gould and Mehunin are astonishing!!

  • I love this piece, even though it's atypical of Bach. I wish I could plwy it half as well!

  • Yeah, Menuhin is awesome, but the pianist, Gould, doesn't suck at all either.

  • FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!

  • awesome !

  • JS Bach must be very proud!!!! :'(

  • Finally, a recording of this sonata where the violin doesn't drown out the keyboard part completely. Hands down the best version in my opinion, full of personality. But then Gould is on the piano and Menuhin the violin

  • Menuhin is not so good this time.

  • @baloghendre

I think menuhin is kind of shitty overall.

  • @wangpenis You are a foulmouthed fool! You could not be more wrong!

Not only was Menuhun one of the greatest violinists, but he was renowned for his interpretations of Bach, from quite an early age.

  • Hello,

I found the music on CD a few years ago by EMI, I think I ordered it from Amazon, the CD contains other music by bach.

There is also an out of print book I bought by Hans T. David, it discusses every phase of this great work.

I have the original vinyl record which I also purchased recently, the liner notes describe (in laymans terms) how the puzzles were created, I can email the notes to you if you are interested. Too many characters for this format..

  • Menuhin is just great. If you haven't heard it listen to "The Musical Offering" by JS Bach played by Menuhin. Fantastic! Its a group of canons and fugues written as a mathematical puzzles created for Frederick the Great of Prussia.

For example: 2 violins begin simultaneously, the 2nd violin playing the same music as the 1st but backwards from the end. The whole is then repeated with the voices changing places. Bach was a true genius!

  • i dare say, i haven't heard Menuhin perform The Musical Offering, and of course i can not locate it on Youtube, so perhaps you may know where on the Internet one may have the pleasure of hearing this Treasure?

    Pax tecum,

    Gustav

  • @6lbhead555 thanks, I did not know of "The Musical Offerings" and I am listening to it now after reading your post. it's unbelievable...

  • Does anyone know when was it recorded?

  • Hi,

it was recorded at october the 26th, 1965. Because of the fact that Menuhin had very less time, they had only one day to exercise this sonata, Schoenberg's Fanatsie op. 47 and Beethoven's Sonate Op. 96.

  • BRAVO

  • Two fantastic artists linked by a genius: J.S. Bach!!!!

  • Decir Gould y Menuhin,es decirlo todo.¡Hasta Bach calla para oírlos.!

  • Thank you VERY much for this posting. Magnificent musicians. Great minds and hearts. Both unique talents. The world is so much richer for their having lived and shared their gifts.

  • Spoken like a true asshole. You should stick to death metal.

  • Right. So, because i'm not some predictable, conformist who likes the classical artists that i'm supposed to like, i'm an asshole? I don't like death metal.

  • An asswhole is defined as the whole in an ass.

    So yeas, yeas it would.

  • Viruosic - two great musicians meets Bach. Amazing how they played so wonderful. What a pleasure to hear them play......

  • both must have been guided by some higher spirit:) i am glad.

  • I like Gould's uncompromising tempo and playing. Sometimes in playing a chamber work, people intend to compromise their plying with their partners, it sounds sometimes ugly. Gould knows that ugliness and I feel he intended to avoid it in his playing.

  • @wohltemperierte that's true. he does not just follows the violin part, but actively participates.

  • Yes gould is genuine but i prefer when it's played whith harpsichord.

  • There's no comparaison, it's violin and piano.

  • You are right.I phrased my meaning badly,as you so aptly and gently pointed out.I do love them both dearly-as I do that glorious rendition.

  • Norbeone, you are partially correct.Menuhin's playing is fine, but Gould's is incomparable. He simply overshadows him,as he would ALMOST anyone. One of the truly greats of the 20Th..century.

  • menuhinonlyfinehereRIGHT!

  • Once again, I don't see the big deal with Menuhin. His performance just doesn't sound sensitive or in tune (not in an intonation sense) with Gould's magnificent playing. Just an opinion, though maybe i'm not alone?

  • thank you very much for sharing this video.
