  • Drug and creativity.

  • this version is soo much better

  • why everybody wants to destroy the good one .. I am so fare a way from neil's young musick and I can see there is value ,,

  • Anybody read the book yet?!

  • what key is the harmonica in?

  • On here again just to tell people to shut up

  • Can somebody tell me the chords to this song? It would much appreciated.

  • neil wasn't even into drugs. He went through phases but never did heroin and barely did cocaine. He did some pills, smoked some weed, and drank alcohol. . shit basically what half the fucking people in this world do. He has bad genes; that's why his kids have cerebral palsy. Neil survived polio for Christ's sake at a time before it was absolutely curable. And he has had diabetes his whole life. Unfortunately, some things just can't be controlled.

  • @rocklegends4ever , nothing wrong with Neil .. its people who kill the god !! there is people just after the second war , who destroyed the value of good people ... what ever there belongs to them like a musick or any thing , they are destroyer and of course they can destroy Neil Young to , as they did desrtoyed the whole planet

so what if he was on drugs >> todays prime minesters and presidents are in drugs and they are killing

    kids and women ..

  • top class song from a top class performer

  • Listening to this song in progressive grounds cafe, bernal heights in SF, CA. Fully manifesting.

  • When was this recorded?

  • Get over the drug references and appreciate the beauty of the word and music everyone knows that drugs are nowhere or in Neil's words everyone knows this is nowhere. Cant believe how good he is and how he just keeps getting better and better a rarity in the world of rock and roll good on you Neil denise

  • What's the date on this?

  • All you assholes celebrating the fucking drug reference lyrics!! Why do you think neil has a fucked up kid? Drugs are good for ya dude and they do wonders for your chromosomes!!

  • @Haskanawa72 Neil doesn't have a fucked up kid. He does have two kids with cerebral palsy.

  • @Haskanawa72 you realy are a muppet

  • @Haskanawa72

Yeah...to bad it did´t work for you...

  • @Haskanawa72

now i found what i said to upset you and i stick by it

    your a fucking muppet

  • Devolution12, chill out and go smoke through a pen. Loser. I'm so glad you can point out Neil's lyrics for all of us. Now genius boy tell us the meaning of the song please. Cause I'm sure you've read the 786 page book about Neil Young wrote by Jimmy McDonough. Dumb ass

  • thanks for posting this

  • i'd like to pick him up hitching and take him home to play, some nielistic songs with him and be in his band like an inca in peru. then i'd sing like in harmony like one of the chosen fue, i'd be in hellven like the hawks last stand or an elephant man in two

  • "smoked through a pen"....fuckin meth heads. Listen to the damn lyrics

  • @Villain187187 man ur an idiot get ur head out of your ass then turn up ur speakers and listen to the song its smoked threw a pen and ill do it again

  • It's "smoked some then, and I'd do it again" you retards

  • @Villain187187 Are you fucking deaf?

    1:14-1:16

"smoked through a pen"...as a lot of hash used to be smoked...btw.

  • is it smoke threw a pen and ill do it again or is it smoke some then and ill do it again ?

  • @devolution12 i posted the lyrics from hyperrust...i do think it is smoked through a pen and 'i'd do it again

  • Comment removed

  • @devolution12 ur right he says through a pen and i'll do it again at least in this version

  • @devolution12 probably the last.... that's what i should do....

  • "smoked it through a pen and I'll do it again..."

  • It's hard to top the "original", this is a great version for sure...As far as the LeNoise version, I think it misses the mark. I saw Neil do this a few months back on his solo tour. I had been listening to a good copy of the show and I think it was done so much better than what's on the album...not just this song either.

  • excellent post ..thanks much for sharing ..one of music's best gifts..

  • what the fuck, we got everything in essex, temple ball from manali being a highlight.

and yes this is so better acoustic, that tone of voice and martin 6 string is the soundtrack to so many of our youths, fuck progress lets have love xxxxxxx

  • Funny ain't it? Several years ago there was Hash from Afghanistan, Lebanon, Morocco and Turkey. Then it became all Coke and Meth. Note how society changed

around this time. The 80's. Hash production was once an art May it be so again.

  • Now that I've heard the new version of this song on Le Noise, I think I like the acoustic version better.

  • compare the revised closing phrase on the new album la noise watch?v=39v3qAqI7qQ

what a great man. what a nice declaration of love.

  • thank you 1 after909

  • Da Vinci, Mozart, Picasso, Young.

  • @rocklegends4ever and Dylan. Neil would agree.

  • Cool

  • here in california it is sold in all the medical marijuana clinics

  • When I was a kid in Detroit hash was fairly common, but I haven't heard of anyone having it for many years now ...

  • i still smoke it

  • for me an impotant post!

    Thank you a lot

  • Check out Neil's live solo electric version of this from the 2010 Farm Aid Show. It' on YouTube - WOW!

  • @latucciart ...amazing!!!

  • I´m an English teacher, so I should watch my language a little. I usually do as well and try to avoid using swear words. They are no good for our youth and deprave their innocent minds! Nevertheless every once in a while I am tempted to make an exception: Neil Young is a fucking genius!

  • Hi man, could you please send me an e-mail with the image of the dentist that's inside the mouth? It's great. Thanks.

  • The just released version is available in HD here on YouTube...complete with Daniel Lanois' unique sonic adjustments

  • Everything Neil does is amazing.

  • Hitchhiker is on the track list of the new album

  • @WyldStallyynn a great electric verssion and an extra updated verse at the end

  • Awsome song. neil keeps getting stronger and stronger

  • a superb song ..n y ..is just one of the best songwriters and singers off all time

  • It sounds like Hitchhiker may be lined up for release shortly - I think it's gonna be on his next album "Le Noise" which is due out at the end of September.

  • @neilyoungatheart : his new electric version that he is playing on his current tour is amazing!!!

  • @1after909 : That's the truth.

  • @1after909

but it's lame compared to this version.

  • @opiumrebel yeah this one has more feel....

  • @1after909

it's a good version, but the/this acoustic version outshines it by a century.

  • @opiumrebel i won't argue with with you...i tend to prefer his acoustic versions overall

  • Saw this tour at a small venue he played the electric version of this, it was absolutely haunting. Neil is a GOD!

  • I am glad I got to see Neil Young in Minneapolis last week doing his solo concert. I wish I could of seen him live in the 60's when he was at his rawest form.

  • @Vill1988 he's playing an unbelievable electric version of this song on his new tour..hopefully it will be on the new album

  • Lova and only Love (Ragged Glory) is a Total rip of this tune and there's a little "Like an Inca" bridged in too. Got cha Neil'er.

  • @HOAXANDCHAINS

It's all just one song brother.

  • Not every genius wants to be discovered.

  • no album. just great in the moment

  • awesome song!!...I've heard of it but never heard it before. Haven't seen NY in over 25 yrs. When did he 1st do this song? Thanks for posting this!!

  • @martin6stringer Debut was 6-23-92 Lenox, Ma. I caught the 1st 5 Hitchhikers

  • if i only had some cash hahaaha

  • Anyone know if this song is on any released album?

  • True.. brutally honest. That's the word

  • amazing song!

  • This is haunting and harrowing and Neil shows he can expose himself to us.. but the lyrics don't compare to most of his best songs.

  • This song sends shivers down my spine.

  • Great , great song

  • the art of the dark acoustic epic....

  • I was told this was

  • Amazing, one of his absolute best and so obscure..

  • also neil young eine ROCKLEGENDE, aber des dumme is so viele in deutschland wissen des :-(

  • The best performer of the last century; Neil has written as many great songs as the Beatles. I don't know about this song though .. but I know 60 others I will never forget how they shook me and haunted me and maybe saved me.

  • how can you compare him with the beatles?!"?!?!?!

neil would fuck them over any day. hahahah

  • Rorboo - OK,I believe Neil was much better than the Beatles. So So much better than mediocre Paul and even great John Lennon.

  • aww yess dude!!! your so right there haha

  • Rorboo - I looked at your Neil Young stash and you are pretty young and you've to hear him write and sing with Buffalo Springfield, got to get to know his first album, Everybody knows this Nowhere (Cowgirl in the Sand), After the Goldrun (when you dance ..), Harvest, time fades away, Rust never sleeps, Tonights the Night, and so much more - Do you know his stuff> Cause this song is not great Neil.

  • neil is a musical artist, not a hit machine. he writes catchy songs but he also writes folk songs that rearrange your soul. so just be educated, dude.

  • Putdown - Dude, I am educated and I have a fundamental constitutional right to free speech. I understand Neil writes catchy and also very deep songs (I can interpret them for you if you want) . I wasn't asking him to be commercial .. I just thought he put out some bad records; a couple records just to get out of a contract with Reprise and many people wasted their money. But Neil if my favorite artist of all time and I fully understand his independence, courage and sometimes stubbornness.

  • I be a new Fan , I have yet to hear a Neil Young song that was not outstanding.

He had a major difference with two of the three csn , didn't he?

    Lift Up Dudes and Douddettes.

  • huckelb- That's fine you can love all of Neil Young songs .. as it OK if I love just some? I don't know if he had such major differences with CSN as he still tours with them sometimes, but Neil likes to be creative and more raw on his on. He has made many solo records where one or all of CSN are on his records.

  • here, here brother!

  • Comment removed

  • yeah dude

i have nearly all of his albums i only favourite his more obscure stuff on youtube haha

  • That's cool but Everybody's Alone is unreleased and obscure and my favorite obscure Neil Young song. Try it - promise it sounds nothing like the Beatles and all Neil. Try "Will to Live" from Stars and Bars for obscure.

  • yeah will to live is class i have that album

he plays all the instruments on that track haha

have you ever heard hold back the tears? (Its one of his lol)

  • Sorry I don't like "hold back the tears" but Don't cry no more tears is great. Do you like Hey Hey My My? .. haven't heard it in almost 30 years but I did like that song.

  • ahh yeah its good

i prefare the acoustic tbh haha

the "cortez the killer" on live rust is probably my fav song of his haha

  • You prefer the acoustic of what hey hey (cause that is acoustic).. just a joke? Sure Cortez is one of my favorites too - not just the killer but the song too. The women all were beautiful - that's the part I like. Just the stuff about the women. I am not deep enough to understanding most of Neil's songs. My mommy tries to explain them to me but gets nowhere. My mom sings about me: "everyone knows your mind is nowhere la de la la de la"

"A mind is a terrible thing", she says.

  • yeah.. sweet..?

  • i have a problem with his polotics but hes such a good singer O_o.. best thing to come outa canada sense maple syrup.

  • Anyone know the origins of this song?

  • great song, deep, billy jackish

  • Truly Neil Young, one of the most influential artists EVER. Tks for the posting.

  • love this artist, expressing all his point of views in life.

  • fuckin class.cant stop listening to this since i came across it,thank u!!

  • Brutal! Honest!

  • Wow. Powerful stuff and yes thank you for uploading this.

  • that's life!!!

    pain,suffering,

    Human weakness

I recognized myself in this song!!

     neil is legend!

  • its definitely "smoked through a pen" thanks so much for sharing

  • just would like to thank 1after909 for all the Neil you have posted.. it's rare to find someone who wants to share these neil gems.. i appreciate and thank you for the hours and hours of joy you have brought to me by the power of neil.

    peace & love

  • and thank you...i've been an avid collector of NY boots for awhile now...i'm a firm believer in sharing the music...I think neil would approve...

  • i think so too!

these NY boots just blow my mind.. they make me feel like nothing's alright but everything will be ok.

    Thanks again

  • Thanks 4 post.....is this song the "B-side" of Big Time single? I heard it in 98 and I just remember was an acoustic song...

  • No... that was 'Interstate' you're thinking of.

  • Yes, thanks, I heard the original version of Interstate after this last night and I recognize it.....a masterpiece.

  • ...i can't imagine this song EXIST now...thank you so much for postin' it...

  • this is a great song, never heard it before, thx for posting!!

  • Amazing, in which album can I find this song?

  • it's an unreleased song , it's not on any of his albums

  • And unfortunately we'll have to wait 'till Archives-Vol. 3 to hear this shining gem. Thanks for postin' it .

  • My god I love this song, thank you.

  • Neil the best one in the world ever!

  • Thanks man!

  • That was the day. A dream ,a hope a disillusion. gawd dammit : word to the prez and the feds Legalize reefer now. not tomorrow.the working class need relief w/o harassment.

  • I feel very lucky to have grown up in the time of Dylan, Neil Young, and so many others. I don't think there will ever be a time like the 60's and 70's with so much pure raw talent. Of course Neil, and Bob live through their music which is why they both managed to survive the awful 80's and 90's (90's were a little better), true musical legends and geniuses the like of which we will never see again.

  • In an interview with Neil on tv the other night, he thought that the 80`s were the best time of all.

  • He probably was in his sarcastic mode. He was quite unsuccessful from 1980-1987.

  • Aside from David Geffen being an asshole to him, Neil Young really does seem to have had a great time in the 80s. The albums and gigs with the International Harvesters are excellent, I feel, "Trans" is one of his most underrated experimental albums, the music video for "Touch the Night" is one of the best of the decade, as is "This Note's for You" and "Freedom" is a brilliant close to the decade. 1995-1998 and 2004-2008 weren't good periods I feel, but overall his career has been extraordinary.

  • depends what you were on 8)

  • @aultshark I think perhaps you are just unaware of the bands in the 80's that were good. And there were many. I like the 90s better 2 though ^^ Peace and love :p

  • @aultshark could not agree more Whats happened to music old tried tested we need new fresh Not covers and other bollocks

  • Neil Young = soul and integrity

  • Hitchhiking now days is kinda crazy, but the song definitely seems geared more towards the younger crowd, free to roam and experience new things.

I was at this concert and don't remember a thing LOL.

Now that I'm 36 years old I have too much responsibility, 5 teenage kids, three adopted.

Now I keep them from doing anything that resembled half the stupid crap I did when I was their age.

That's life, but one cool thing about Neil is that you don't need drugs to feel high just listening.

  • Where and when was this concert?

  • The doctor gave me valium

But I still couldn't close my eyes

I still couldn't close my eyes.

i so now what he means by this

  • Awesome tune/not great recording/nothing special video...Favorite!

  • ''smokin grass an....'' whooopp whooo. peace neil man your ma niggah

  • This is an honest song about "True" human emotions. Please don't kill what you don't understand.

  • I don't know how "smoked through a pen" sounds anything like "smoked some then"?

I've got 3 live performances of this song. Neil sings "smoked through a pen" each time.

  • yeah sound like through a pen.. that just made this tune even better.. only neil can pull that off

  • It seems to me that the wordies are, "smoke THROUGH a pen and I'd do it again..."

  • yep :/

  • Amazing song and video !

There is the true Neil's spirit

  • Thanks for uploading these! Great stuff!

    5*z for sure ~cg5

  • free the weed then every thingelse let the people choose jmcnab son of nab dundee

  • Wow great song

  • "It's all one song"

  • I love how i he threw in the chorus of 'like an inca' and used as a verse in this song.

  • Neil has always had that feel for the "open road", and what always happens upon that road. When he puts it into words and music, it's TRUELY magic......... Thanks Neil.....

  • Neil kicks ass!

  • Hitching was safe in the 70's.

I met some interesting people, along south I-75, to Florida.

Learned a few things about people too.

Still, may be worth a thought or two, as you get older.

Not necessarilly because of gas prices, but the possibility of still having some interesting conversation.

I write all of this, as a positive dream, or opportunity, for one last look around, before it, "Comes A Time," to convince one's self to settle down.

  • this sonbg sounds amazing on and offf drugs, truly a beautifyl piece. Much respect for neil young .

  • how is he is always so good . even great

  • love this song. diff version. tasty. real

  • Pick up the hitchhiker along the way, brother.

  • please...

  • Definitely, a brilliant "Shakey," production.

    Timeless.

  • Thank you.... One of his best... takes me to a place that few songs can...

  • Thanx 909, read about this in Shakey, just takes you somewhere outa here...

  • anyone know where i can get an mp3 of this, or how i can rip the sound from this vid??

  • Google Media Pirate. Copy and paste the youtube URL and click "grab it." You will get an FLV file. There is a program called Riva FLV encoder. Use the Riva FLV converter to conver the FLV to an MP3.

  • Thanks

  • the way this began I thought you wanted to score some hash ...

  • Haha, ahhh us neil young fans, the stereotype lives on.

  • this song leaves me with the same kinda feeling as Natural Beauty off of Harvest Moon does...I've been waiting for another song like this..superb!

  • Neil young, i beg you to come to Norway!!!!!!! i will be at front row!

  • Fucking great man... Love it. It's his drug history. Is from his solo acoustic tour 1999? I saw him on that tour. Great show! Im going to see him again in a few weeks (Dec 7th!!) at the same venue.Neil Show # 13 for me. Like an Inca from peru. Chrome Dreams II is really a good Album. His best in a few years. Neil sent it to everyone who bought tickets on this tour Buy it. Neil is the man!
