I live in Flanders. I had no idea that the "Ronde Van Vlaanderen" is also alive among riders on the other side of the ocean. Nice video. Loved the dramatic music. It goes so well with the feeling you get riding steep hills: drama... ;-)
Nice when I get out to Portland I'm gonna hit these! I'm riding my trek 520 across country and moving to Portland this summer! My SLX cassette would eat these hills, even with my bike fully loaded!
It's funny reading posts calling these guys "pussies" etc and laughing at their gear ratios. They might not be tour champs but they're out there, in the rain, on steep inclines, challenging their limits and having a great time with friends. If you criticize that then you're a fool. Nice movie too.
Those two climbs combined make a ski run, example the peel at crested butte,co. Holy shit id shove a hand tire pump up the guys ass whose idea that was for suggesting something like that, i mean i do pretty decent on hills but that no way in hell
Brynwood averages 22-23% with a pitch to about 27% where many people were zig zaging. Most of those riders were probably in a 34-27 and still they were pushing a slow cadence. One friend could hardly walk up because his road shoes were slipping so badly. My bike was wheelieing and I was on the nose of the saddle This ride takes you up the ten steepest hills in Portland. You climb 7200' in 21 miles.
you should try the lady hill it starts off flat then evey 150 yards in then becomes 10%,25%,45% then the last 500 yards it's 75% and to the guy who said they would bo it on a mouiatin bike I say no change.
North of England way there is Swiss Hill in Alderley Edge twenty percent with cobbles. Then Mow Cop near Stoke will get most riders zigzagging, if not gagging. The steepest I've encountered though is Gap of Mamore in County Donegal, Ireland. estimated over twentyfive percent in places. Dont know how the tarmac didn't rolloff down the hill when they laid it.
Yes, I walked, two steep hills, not far. Upon the decent from Council Crest, no lion was painted how to get back to Pryamid Brewing, added extra miles. Thanks to the local residence's for providing some goodies, very nice. Must have good brakes!!!
im not saying this little ride isnt hard, but really only 20%?
im 13 years old and im from pittsburgh, i ride hills like that, but a lot steeper. take the dirty dozen for example, 13 of the hardest hills in pittsburgh, canton ave is 38% grade. in other words its the steepest street in america. to top it off it is all cobblestone.
It's so funny to watch these powerful badass looking roadies reduced to nothing as they zig-zag all over the place and eventually get off and walk up the hill. Clearly none of these guys believe in using compact cranks! It's only cheating if you use a triple. Kidding aside, There is no shame in using a compact. I've got a compact on my Trek and don't miss the standard crank at all. I'm not racing, so who cares?? :)
looks like some tough hill climbing fun. If theres one thing I love most about cycling its hauling my arse up hills. I live in south west england though so not many lengthy hills but theres plenty of steep ones. Alot max out at 20-25% so respect to all the riders in this video who were able to ride the whole route. :)
with all do respect, climbing would be easier if they got rid of those stupid saddly bags they have have. its extra un-needed weight. not saying the climb without it is going to be significantly easier, but its less power you need to generate to move the bike you can save it for the next killer hill.
They are riding antique bikes with the wrong gearing. Did I see fenders and a rack on one of the bikes? Plus i don't see anyone who knows how to ride. Whats their cadence? 20?
@echprelude if you didn't notice it's raining and the roads are all wet. it's very common to use fenders when the roads are wet. besides who are you to criticize these riders? lets see you do it
accidentally, the one with racks are the ones with the proper eiding technique and er going pretty good uphill. I wonder how good of a biker you are because you seem to know it so well
We have a ride in pittsburgh,pa. every dec. called the dirty dozen, taking in 12 of the steepest in the city. We have a road at 38% in the ride, supposed to be the steepest improved road on the planet, and it's cobbled. It hurts sooo good!
well i hate how everyone always has to say something about Italy or Europe. who cares...this is as gnarly as it gets, when you get over 18% it really doesnt matter anymore, it all just sucks. Of course Europe has hard climbs, it has all the most presigous races in the world too. whether it is in Europe or not...its insane.
@HOPSING08 Well said. % + distance is what matters...not location. This is a well made video of what looks like a fun ride.....fun until its my ass in the saddle ;).
Very brave of you gents. Loved to watch the vid. I've seen it many times on tv but it never looked that steep. Thanks for your tribute to 'De ronde van Vlaanderen'.
sometimes when it's that wet it's best just to kill yourself sitting down rather than standing up and pedaling, that way you get better traction and either way you're suffering.
at 4:42 ou can see how to climb CORRECTLY. The guy with red jacket, whit very light multiplication (maybe with "megarange"). The other guys are injuring his lumbar disk.
Well done video, looked like a real sufferfest. There are hills with crushing gradients here is West Virginia, but I don't think it is as crazy as out your way!
Thanks for the compliment. I'm sure you have some gnarly hills as well judging from my memories cruising in the mountains of WV looking for rock climbs, kayaking and caving locations.
Steep climb + rain = back wheel spinning (when off the seat) for me anyway.
Good on them - they're tough climbs. The Angliru in Italy was removed from the Giro de Italia because it was so steep(at 23% I think) and Euro pros were putting on triples to ride it previously!!
E no primeiro colina no mola me peguei.
Yes, I tried riding both hills again recently, with a lighter bike and a compact crankset, just to try. There is no other reason to even be on these hills than just to try. And on the first hill, "the spring" got me again.
You can find out about the whole ride at my website flybynightpro com under /video/cycling.html . The complete route is on that page. The steep rides are rather short. Brynwood is 0.9 km and actually averages 22% with the steepest pitch 29% now that I have had time to make some repeated measurements. College Avenue is shorter about 0.4 km and a 18% grade. There were longer climbs such as the first climb up Saltzman Road which is about 6 km long.
This is seriously the best video I've seen on YouTube in the last few months. You guys have some serious guts taking on hills like that. I wouldn't last 2 seconds.

Alto de El Angliru was never part of the Giro (perhaps because it's located in the province of Asturias, Spain).
The Angliru has been used as a stage in 4 additions of the Vuelta a Espana.
espada9 3 years ago 4
As Espada9 noted, the Angliru is in Spain. The big steep climb in Italy it compares to is the Zoncolon.
In 2006 the Giro had planned on climbing up a dirt road that was over 25% gradient, but rain caused the course to be changed.
No triples, but compacts in the 34x25 range were fairly common.
