The score should have been 3-1 because one german goal was disallowed as a offside even though gerd muller was onside and I wouldn't call a 3-1 victory "a little bit lucky". The 1974 dutch team was the best the dutch have ever fielded but they were unlucky since the germans had their second best team of all time (in my opinion).
for everyone saying germans penalty was a dive (what is hard to judge really): the dutch "penalty" was clearly out of the box and a regular goal for germany wasn't given in 2nd half, so stop whining dutch fans and accept the defeat

The score should have been 3-1 because one german goal was disallowed as a offside even though gerd muller was onside and I wouldn't call a 3-1 victory "a little bit lucky". The 1974 dutch team was the best the dutch have ever fielded but they were unlucky since the germans had their second best team of all time (in my opinion).

for everyone saying germans penalty was a dive (what is hard to judge really): the dutch "penalty" was clearly out of the box and a regular goal for germany wasn't given in 2nd half, so stop whining dutch fans and accept the defeat

actually i am german living in austria. i don't ridicule dutch football, they certainly always have good players, but whats the use when they can't win a worldcup ;) and still, if you call germans penalty a dive, call it out of the box aswell, and don't forget the not given goal. and if you try to talk german to me, learn it first

Second: your football is not much, you need players like Robben, Ribery, etc, etc to be able to have a decent competition and yet still you can´t win a champions league! Third: it is a FACT that the German penalty IS a dive, and Cruyff is CLEARLY tackled INSIDE the box! YES Muller scored a clear goal, but 3-1? It would not have even been 1-1 then LOL DIVERSS

This was football at its finest. Yes, Holland's total football was ahead of its time but West Germany's tactics would influence many national sides to come.

basically Michels is saying that Cruyff had an off day and no one but Mueller would have scored that goal. Have to disagree there - Rensenbrink was injured during the first half and didn't really figure. Michels should have played Piet Keizer - he played VD Kerkhof who didn't have Keizer's skills. Also the Dutch were over-confident and needlessly tried to humiliate the Germans, which is a basic mistake obviously. But a much better team-performance than in S Africa: football of the highest sort
