May I humbly ask, exactly what do these pedals do? If it's called the Octavia, is it playing the same note an octave above or below? I like your phrase blooming of the notes...I imagine a fulltone supra trem with the octavia would be a nice mix..but my question still stands...
@sclogse1 when the signal hitting the pedal is a perfect sine wave it will take it up one octave, which is mostly noticeable around the twelfth fret playing on the neck pickup. Playing multiple notes together will get you crazy harmonic overtones that sound kind of sub-octavey. Its not really a pitch shifter per say but it can give you octave up and down depending on how you play it.
For which song? If you're talking about what you hear in the second solo of Belief or I don't need no doctor, he said somewhere that hes actually using a ehx microsynth's octave up feature. I've seen him use a POG before but not for that sound for the solos.
This guy does a good demo,he makes them both sound good, but they are not faithful reproductions.Dont be fooled by hype, and clever advertising,The chicago iron looks the part, but at the side of a real tycobrahe octavia it sounds shit, and in a completely different league.when I start doing demos, you can see what i mean.dont get me wrong the mayer and ch iron are ok pedals, just not in the same league as the real deal....
The guitar playing in this vid really does it justice. This pedal does a great job for getting those old time Hendrix tones for those Hendrix cats out there. I pair mine with a good octavia octave up pedal. Tried the Roger Mayer octavia but was disappointed. The 'Fillmore Thunder' by Elite Tone is awesome the octave notes ring out clear undistorted. It rocks a groovy BC108 Fuzz in the same box. Mine was $177 I think. Well worth it!
this IS the dividing line between two camps....players who think it is possible to get a "good" sound out of a breadboard and a few microchips....and those of us who know that copper wrapped around iron and vacum sealed tubes is the ONLY place a "good" tone comes from.
The Mayer (toy) sounds like a line6 pitch shifter with some DOD circuit induced "gain" added....and the ChiCago iRun sounds like the real deal...which most kids just hate because is sounds gritty and real...not processed.
Mayer Octavia sounds much better , sounds right. Octavian have very muddy sound , and that is not usable with band or when you recording...probably have not output buffer...Roger Mayer is a real deal , and Vision Octavia is even better
@stewie9793 actually I'm pretty sure the univibe was what was supposed to sound like it was underwater, which makes sense, cause that's what it sounds like haha
well yes it does sound that way, but jimi apparently had a dream he was under water and the octavio produced the sound he heard...it really doesnt matter, he was prolly on an acid trip lol
Thanks for doing the comparison. I just picked up an Octavian as a trade leveler and didn't get what all the fuss was about, even with a '57 CS Strat through three different amps, but after hearing you play yours, am willing to put some more effort into working with it. Really like your Hendrix type riffs.
Thanks to you I figured out what was wrong with my Octavian - as the battery weakens, so does the octave generator and it just becomes a muddy fuzz pedal. I plugged it into a 9v transformer and the sucker came alive - awesome pedal.
You like what into what?? You telling me you have all these original gears and did a comparison?! purleezz, stop pretending you know what your talking about when all the experience with these gears are on youtube.
Dude, Let us hear them both on at the same time! Would it go 2 octaves up? or just sound completely wacky and noisy? or not sound all that different from one octavia?
The Roger Mayer has more personality. I already owned the Octavian. After seeing this, I immediately bought the Roger Mayer. So much more musical. Yes, the Chicago Iron is cleaner and more 'contained' sounding, but the Mayer has way more vibe to my ears. It screams!
Yes I agree. For me, its the harmonics on the RM Octavia that appeals to me. On Jimi's BOG "Who Knows" lead, you can hear this example at it's finest. Roger is still alive & well & is hand making a much improved version of the Octavia for around $500. I was looking for a demo of it when I came across this one...
The Mayer sounds more primal, more rock with fuzz on. The Chicago Iron has a more polished tone. Pedals are flavors, or opinions, everyone has different taste. I believe that chirppin' Mayer hitting the front of a wide open Marshall would be the shiznit.
thanks. If you dont mind me asking how do you afford all that stuuff? Some of those effects are like 300+ which im sure you know. Is the roger mayer what Kenny wayne uses on blue on black?
I also heard the octavia at the Chicago Iron site and Im considering on buying the 2008 model which has the 60's & 70's mode & a couple of other features. I'm playing thru a rocktron piranha stereo tube amp into a carvin power tube amp and slaming the front end of the pre with a Keely time machine boost pedal to get the Yngwie/Eric Johnson tone and sustain. Now I need the smooth & slim from Ayan :) I want to add the best Octave fx I can get for my rig. I'll post my vid soon! :)
Thanks so much for this. I just happened upon the Chicago Iron site, and on hearing the Lance Keltner demos... well, on hearing "Octavian Bridge Boogie" I felt like I was 5, my mom had been living in another country since my birth, and she'd just walked in to tell me that the world is good, after all. Which is pretty good for an effects pedal... anyway, thanks much.
The rm octavia needs to be set to a sweet spot before it really comes alive, and only really performs on a strat neck pickup. but then it really kicks ass
Thanks for the video. We need more user reviews like this. Too bad you didn't have an original "Tyco" Octavia to compare, or one of the prototypes that Jimi Hendrix named "Octavio." One of them is in the Hendrix museum in Seattle.
Roger Mayer did not invent the device, as he has claimed. The prototype was designed by Jimi's guitar tech, Jim Morris.
Hi JimiRay; I can see that you love your RM Octavia, so I won't comment about its sound, but I can tell you that the Tycobrahe Octavia was named that in 1972. None of the later clones, including Roger's, were as good as Tyco's, which were an improved version of the orginal Octavio that Noel Redding gave to Keith Relf after Jimi died. As someone noted below, Chicago Iron's Octavia is probably the best one currently made.
thanks for this, it's nice to see a pedal versus/demo that is comprehensive and done by someone who knows the ins and outs. I'm looking for a good octave pedal that does 1 octave up & 1 down, with seperate controls... any suggestions? Cheers.
techrenegade, check out the Foxrox Octron. An excellent pedal that offers octave up & down, with a direct channel too. Should be a video somewhere on youtube, well worth checking out.
I thought the best sound was the Roger Mayer and and the Analogman together. 2:17.
