He is one of the few drummers that can make his solo groove, as you can tell by the bobbing of heads. He doesn't just hit a million notes, he treats his solos like a song, something modern drummers don't do.
Tommy's dad Sonny Igoe was also a fine drummer who recorded an amazing solo 'New Golden Wedding' with Woody Herman's orchestra back in the 1950s.
Tommy manages to combine his jazz roots with modern sensibilities and a
technique honed by a life time growing up with drums. He swings, he can play and he can inspire. An eloquent ambassador for the art of drumming me thinks.
Just because he travels around a lot as an educator and shows himself close to amateurs, he is really underrated. If Tommy Igoe acted like all the other great drummers and barely talked to people and acted all Cool, then he would be way much more in the spotlight and more famous.
That solo reminded me of a touch of a number of the greats. Smart players learn from the others then find their own voice as he obviously done. Each one deserves their own kudos. To say this guy or that guy sucks shows you to be narrow minded.
I'm obsessed with track 2 on the Vic Firth Artist CD.. Now, Knowing who the drummer is on that song.. I am very impressed, "Tommy" .. Keep Up The Good Work, Man :)
Great Drummer,Great Band,Great Jazz Club,Great City,Great Country!! 1st thing I do when I book my holiday to New York i book a reservation to Hear This Band!!!
@t4math I understand what you're saying, but I said he COULD be ONE of the best. Not he IS the best. There are many other drummers who are on his level .
@TheTorontoMusician There are only few drummers in this world at his level. Who can play all styles on such high levels and flexibility? I mean I'm aware of all the great drummers in the world, and I used to think Buddy Rich was the best of all, but as I acquired more musicianship I realized the greatness of Tommy Igoe's playings and variations of style. Its not even an exaggeration to call him the BEST. But, one thing for sure is that this guy is one of the best drummers of all time.
@TheTorontoMusician I would substitute drummer with musician. The man is such a musical player which is a total breath of fresh air amongst the army of heavy hitters and rudiment bombing drummers around haha
@drumsforpete.....you are an idiot. You don't know good drumming if your life depended on it. You just want to get on this site and bash people. So, I'll return the favor and tell you with a bashing that you probably like drummers like Bill Stewart and that's fine...he's great alright, but for you to knock a great guy like Tommy tells me you are a narcissistic person who probably voted for Obama and you love yourself to be a critical person of other people's work. Go away!
@savooli this IS a video of Tommy. What's the matter? You didn't understand the message I was trying to portray to the critic drumsforpete? He was bashing Tommy and his great solo. I called him a narcissist (which is a power driven individual who thinks he's in charge of being right all the time and has an attitude with a chip on his shoulder). I was defending Tommy by letting this guy know that you don't come on here thinking you are better than him without proving it behind the drums yourself.
@drumsforpete...Please,this solo is great. Period. Not your cup of tea? Fine, but don't make it sound like this is bad drumming cuz you just look a common clueless youtube hater.
If you like Bill Stewart, fine, he's a great player.Tommy's band is a modern, aggressive big band; why compare apples and oranges? They play completely different! Maybe if you heard the entire composition the solo would make more sense to you. It seems like you're just trying to validate your own tastes by bashing others.
Sorry, his playing leaves me flat... All standard cold chops/technique (and very out dated sounding, like a 1940's rudimental Jazz book or something an old man force fed a student to sound like) which though well executed, has absolutely zero originality or soul. I could care less how hard he's trying to seem groovy or what kind of facial expressions he's making... It's soul-less. It's as boring as white bread and Campbell's soup. People like Bill Stewart make this guy sound like a poseur chump.
@drumsforpete .... This setting is sort of a 40`s jazz / big band setting ... maybe you would prefer him to be playing some Marco Minnimen ostinato`s or Thomas Pridgeon type flams between his kick and snare .... i dont know man , it seems like Tommy plays what is needed .... I really like him a lot .
Tommy is such a nice guy....met him at PASIC and he was a real fine genuine guy.
He can teach and PLAY! I wish he was my instructor. I love how you can see the passion when he plays. He is incredible. For those that don't have it yet.....go out and try to get his books-------Groove Essentials 1 and 2--------you'll be glad you did.
When are you coming to San Antonio Texas? If you do let me know, please.
he is what keeps my inspiration for drumming going...though listening to some of his stuff reminds me of Buddy Rich....which of course was another absolutely amazing drummer..
Very refined. My drum teacher always taught me if at all possible to make it a point to play the high hat on beat with your drums to help keep sync. That is why I never adopted the double bass or cared for it because I am so much about snare, hi hat and rhythm and being melodic. Tommy is so awesome to watch and I really appreciate him. He really shows appreciate for the music in his performance.
I'm a huge fan of tommy igoe. Incredible teacher as well as fabulous player.
