  • Tovey would have been a bad choice for me..too wimpy looking for a start and way too young like matt smith. I always thought eddie izzard may have made a good who as he has a lot of energy and is eccentric without being overly so. Im not really impressed with smith from the prgrammes ive seen him in and the live clips of filming where you can hear dialogue. we'll see but im not hopeful

  • After listening to THGTG this week I think Stephen Mangan would make a good Doctor. He would bring a quirkiness to his perform that would definitely be his own. Matt is still a better choice though :)

  • Thanks so much - I did'nt catch that - I think Matt is great & hopefully he will be around for the length of his

    contract to prove it:)

  • It's still on for another week and you could catch up on iplayer, but it only really got good last night there were some really good moments in it though.

  • Hey - thanks so much for the info:)

  • i find it interesting that RTD would express a different decision regarding the 11th Doctor WHO, Matt Smith. Why would RTD throw Matt under the bus thay way. Like Tennant he should be given a chance a season or two too see what he'll uniquely bring to the role. For me the casting of course will always be controversial but the writing/storyline is by far the foundation to a strong series. Can't wait all the best to Matt Smith.

  • Thanks so much - The show will always live & die by the strength of scripts and quality of production. I raised this subject really because of some criticism of Matt (unfair), and how RTD would have dealt with the fact that David was going:)

  • I have been looking at Steven Moffat's Wiki page he is doing a modern version of Sherlock Holmes with Mark Gartiss and Tintin for the Cinema. However, I feel none of the actors that are doing these could pull of the Dr. There are some good actors but Matt just seem to be the Doctor in the same why Troughton and Baker just are.

  • Thanks - I tend not to use Wikipedia, its so unreliable - But Steven is a great writer, i feel he could pull off an effective Holmes tribute:)

  • Over here in US we are frequently so far behind with the series. Even BBCAmerica is well inadequate for news and televising of the series over here :( but why is it that it seems in UK that youth is considered a negative in respect playing Doc Who. i remember early on when David T. took over that he was said to be too young the same was said about Peter D. i must admit the varied way the Doctor has appeared in series should be embraced. Although i don't ever want to see him as a woman.

  • Thanks so much - I agree, we are all too concerned about age, old or young. If you are good enough is what we should focus on:)

  • Personally I think he would have chosen David Morrissey. David M. played brilliantly in "The Next Doctor", and it quite capable of portraying manic energy or a darker brooding side - whichever would be called for.

  • Thanks so much Misti - David was wonderful in The Next Doctor but i don't think he was ever a serious contender. I stated at the time he would have beeen great but it was not to be:)

  • I really don't know how RTD's mind works at all, so I can't really say who he would pick. I mean, I would think he would have considered Matt Smith, but his final choice, I just can't imagine who he would have ended up with.

However, my problem for actually picking someone is that I don't get to watch tons of British shows or plays. I just have BBC America, PBS, and what I can find on the Net.

If I could morph time, I would make Johnathan Price young again, and cast him.

  • Wow - A young Jonathan Pryce - very good actor & underrated too:)

  • I've seen Brazil 10 times (my favorite movie of all time, and my favorite director too), and Baron Munchhausen about 5 times, so I know how great of an actor he is. :)

Plus, he did a great job as the Master opposite Rowan Atkinson in Steven Moffat's The Curse of Fatal Death.

  • I have always wanted Ewan McGreggor as the doctor and still do.

  • Thanks so much - It would be an amazing choice but Ewan probably now has his eyes on major Hollywood productions:)

  • If RTD was still producer....

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGH!

    Ahem.

RTD went one for two on casting the Doctor, and the time he got it right, I think it was a combination of dumb luck and the fact that David was a fan, and it showed in his performance.

Now, what if RealArcalian was in charge, and he could pick any actor he wanted, and not have them turn him down?

    Ewan McGregor.

  • Ahem, are you ok now, lol, but seriously Ewan would be marvellous, if only he was'nt an international superstar now:)

  • i would have liked to see patterson joseph i think hes a marvellous actor , especially in survivors

  • I agree, Patterson is wonderful in Survivors & if we base it simply on the colour of the guys skin, then thats wrong:)

  • Hugh Grant, RTD has said that Hugh Grant played the doctor well in Moffat's curse of the fatal death and I for one would tolerate the female population swooning over the doctor if he was actually played by an old man such as Hugh. I think Gatiss or Briggs should have a chance to play a canonical doctor.

  • Thanks so much - Gatiss would have been my choice but RTD has stated he has high regard for Tovey, & he would have made a good Doctor:)

  • Truthfully have no idea. I would have liked to have seen an older actor possible to play the role. Someone like Robert Lindsay or James Nesbitt. I think James would make a great master after seeing him in Jekyll. However, I really feel Matt will make a great Dr. Seen some spoiler pics from the mail Karren Gillian is 5ft 11. She is taller than me. Not on lol. God she is a hot assistant.

  • Thanks so much - I think RTD knew he would'nt have to make this decision but it was a tough one & Moffatt has got it bang on. Karen was a model, at 5 ft 11, she is one of the tallest companions & i agree she is lovely:)

  • Can't imagine Russell Tovey being the Doctor, maybe good as a companion role!! I think RTD would have picked Paterson Joseph but I personally would've liked Chris Barrie!! x

  • Thanks Phoe - Patterson would have been a good choice, he's a fine actor but Chris Barrie would have been mad:)

  • Hmm.

I think Russell Tovey would have possibly become the Doctor - but; I think he may have seen all the actors who Steven Moffat saw and would have found him there (Matt Smith) cos if he is excellent then I don't think Davies would have missed him.

This is an impossible question! But considering it's a parrallel universe - I suppose it would have been me! :)

  • No, i want the job - but seriously, i don't think Matt was even on RTD's radar, the decision came from left field:)

  • Sparky, can I just point out that you put: DDoctor Who.

    Just pointing it out :-)

    Great video SG!

  • Huh!!!?? - Thanks:)
