The UFC couldn't just sign JZ, Ishida or Melendez to come in and fight for the title. Signing fighers isn't that simple. And why would they get a shot at a UFC title never having fought in the UFC?
Florian would have made some sense. But then again, did he really earn the shot against Sherk? All he did was beat Sam Stout. Did Stevenson even deserve a title shot? All he was beat Kurt Pellegrino. At least BJ beat a former champ to get his shot.
That doesn't change the fact that they can't just come into the UFC and get an automatic title shot. I realize that's what BJ did at UFC 46, but at least he had fought in the UFC before.
I'm a huge BJ Penn fan and I agree with you when you are talking about how he is getting title shot out of thin air. I love watching his fights... but he really didn't fight anyone for this title and it would be nice to watch him beat up more people before a title. I think this is a UFC admin issue. They must give him a break casue he fights in two weight category and he's bags-o-money in the public eye. Either way I'M WATCHING THAT FIGHT!!!
the whole partying thing isnt relevant as when does BJ Penn ever show injuries? its like a mark hunt fight he can get owned and still be fine its a great ability if u got it
Why is everyone bitching about PENN's title shots?.. i got a good idea. Why not put BJ Penn and GSP in another fight and wait for the outcome. It's a fucking business.
Part 2. Ask your self this... this is going to be Brock Lesnar 2nd main cards! why? what has he ever done??? well Because the UFC is trying to bring the WWE Wrestling fans to the UFC! the UFC is just a business that will very soon come to an end! with all of this other new organisations out there that are wiling to pay the fighters real money. don't get me wrong i think BJ has the potential to take a tittle on any giving day and they know that! that's why he gets a shot at the big fish.
There is a few reasons...His accomplishments in Jiu-Jitsu World Championships! many people Todd that he beat GSP! in the fight with Hughes Penn was up 2 rounds and if not for the injury to the rib the Belt would have been BJs! fought at 185, Machida 205 and did good on that fight. i got the fight on tape. the most decorated BJJ in the US and the fastest non brazilian to get the black belt in the world! know one thing. MMA is bigger than the UFC. what has Jon fitch done world wide?
..because bj is a well over accomplished fighter in the UFC n around the world..n if that other fighter won, it would be so big for him n a victory that not many other top notch n great fighters could ever achieve..u might question why he is always getting the first shot/chance for the big fights??..its because he is the only fighter that was will take on fighters in three or four weight classes above him.
The reason "BJ Penn" always gets the big fights n the title shots are because he is that dam good..they know that bj can beat who ever it is or who ever is the champion at that time..he doesnt need to be on a win streak to earn a shot..you go n ask the fighter he is fighting if they would rather fight bj or the person that he was suppose to fight..they will say bj..
Being a Penn fan, I actually agree with you. Penn should have had more fights before getting his shots. There's a couple a fighters that should have fought more to get their shots. Like Randy and Sherk. But I get it's the UFC who decides what fights are going to happen. good video
it also sounds like your hating on bj penn to me, and i think he got a title shot because he was dropping weight classes. hes still the top in his class. you gotta pay your dues at ufc. thats just how it goes.have you watched any of the bj penn fights recently. he basically dismantles people.
well bj penn is the champ no one has been able to beat him now. hes a different fighter now. yes hes in a lower weight class but dont you think fighters go through progression?
why put up the fighters that you know aren't going to sell the tickets? why go through the BS small fish fights when you can go with the big ticket fights?
I wouldn't do it, I would put up fighters that I knew had a fan base that I knew excited fans and that I knew will sell tickets and PPV, it just how it goes.
the ufc can sell tickets on any fight, evans/bisping still did a lot of buys even without a title or even proven fighters, the only main events that seem not to really sell are tim sylvia main events which are always for the title
I don't think so, excitement is the key of all matches, even UFC 80 rapid fire was considered by some to be a boring card.
take BJ record, he was consider the best in the light weight before it was removed from the UFC, which made him move up in weight class, his name reck gave Dana the chance to pair him against Hughes, it's not like there was a serious proving system to get Hughes back then. Penn won, then leaves the UFC and continues to win his fights, losing only to lyoto.
giving the line of wins and his only lost to someone that is 2 times higher than his natural weight class. he comes back to the UFC and asks to take on GSP, nothing wrong with that, what should he prove? he never got a chance to defend his title in a match, why should he have to battle his way back to the top? he's been undefeated in the light weight and welterweight classes since Jens, then you have a hotly debated close loss to GSP, GSP goes down in injury.
why wouldn't Dana take up the match up between Penn and Hughes? Not only does that fight settle the discord over the GSP fight outcome for the fans, but it gives a far move exciting fight with a revenge shot for hughes who had said in public that he wanted Penn before the GSP fight. Again Penn loses to hughes in a close and great fight. Dana asks Penn to drop to the light weight again, he does and takes on the only man that has ever beat him in lightweight and wins, then there is Joe.
UFC 80 was suppose to be setup for for a title shot sherk, but he gets his belt stripped, so he beats Joe, so now he is the champ. so how is this unfair? he's been undefeated in the lightweight since Jens, he was the top contender for the divison before UFC removed the weight class. he's 7-1-1 in the light weight before the fight against Joe, that's a contender record and how can you say that he never defended a title bout when hasn't been able to?
BJ earn his first title shot against Jens, he and Uno was the top fighters in the lightweight after Jens left the UFC. How is it BJ's fault that Dana setup the fight between him and hughes the first time? he beat Hughes in his prime and ended a 13 win streak by Hughes. Why shouldn't he get GSP when he returned? BJ was the champ and had a strong ranking, he asked for the biggest kid on the block and GSP agreed.
BJ took no.2 GSP down to the wire in a contested fight, makes him 3rd in my book, so when GSP goes down, who should fill in?
I don't know how you can discredit his record, when it's his record and his showing in those fights that gives the UFC every reason to give him the shots.
1st and 2nd shots at light weight he earned, 3rd shot in the welterweight was Dana's fault, 4th shot that was in welterweight was to settle the discord over the GSP fight, and 5th again was earned by his record.
hey whats up BJ HATERS....BJ PENN said FUK YOU GUYS...peace out bitches....now what...now keep hating while he kicks everybodys assss.ss....have fun bitches..lol
whatever bro, u still don't know what the fuck ur talking about ur just defending him because u know him.....oohh big whoop there....it doesn't even matter because nothing u can do or say can convince me that bj deserves the title
i bet u do get off on this shit don't u sick fuck.....prolly got a big poster of him on ya wall and beat off 2 it everynight as ur mommy comes and tucks u in huh
i could name a few guys who are more deserving than bj......roger huerta for one, who is on a 6 fight win streak just in the ufc...i believe he has show that he has got what it takes to be in the elite......also tyson griffin is up in the ranks as well....bj in my mind hasn't beat any opponent within the 155 division to convince me that he deserves a shot....i mean dear god it was only his second fight back at 155, he should have at least had to work his way up, not start at the top
well it's obvious 2 see that u are as well a PENN NUT SUCKER........i have my favorite fighters and i don't praise them, i don't praise anyone as a god because there is only one true GOD.....so what if i'm a hater, fuck y'all who dispise me, i didn't think penn deservered the shot....he hasn't even beating top tear guys at 155, the only guy he beat AT 155 in the ufc with any significance was jens pulver, big whoop......i respect bj's skills but as a person, i don't like him at all
it's so striking to me how newbees to the UFC and MMA don't really respect or know BJ. BUT guys who've followed the UFC and MMA from the beginning and guys who've trained in it, well i've yet to see someone like that not respect BJ! u may hate the guy personally, but his MMA skills are unquestionable! true knowledgeable fans and practioners of MMA cannot discredit BJ's MMA prowess, you newbees will COME TO RESPECT BJ, just keep watching, he'll amaze you...
and by the way i am not a so-called "newbee" as u say.....and i never said i didn't respect BJ's skills, go look at my comment if u don't remember, NO I DID NOT.....i said i was tired of hearing able him, yes we all know he's good, yes we all know who he's beaten, we all know the same shit we hear out of everyone of his fans' mouths....yes bj has skills, we know that, i just get sick of hearing his praised like he is an mma god....now respect that
i have immense respect for his skills and i made that damn well clear
this argument has literally nothing to do with his skills its about earning a title shot
ill have my rant about sherk hell i said many of the same things about randy, never made a video and in hindsight should have and maybe id get less flack
okay to all you BJ doubters and haters out there who question why BJ gets all these title shots and how everyone "rides his balls." LOL, okay okay, i'll try to put it in very simple terms so you dumbasses can't get confused okay? BJ PENN was chosen by God, made lucky by God, blessed by God WITH 'PRODIGY' CALIBER TALENTS IN THE FIGHTING GAME!!! LOL, first he mastered BJJ in like 3 years, then progressed to MMA. he gets all these title shots B/C THE REAL EXPERTS, not u, KNOW HOW TALENTED HE IS!
penn could have fought 1 more legit opponent and with a victory and good showing both likely have earned a shot, does it kill u to wait for a man to earn a shot?
and u cant tell me that first shot at Hughes was not huge BS, a man coming off a failed attempt at the LW goes up WW and gets a title shot when the likes of GSP, Karo and even Nick Diaz were more entitled

LOL, what year was the first BJ and Hughes fight? yah Karo won a couple already in the UFC, GSP one or two, Nick Diaz??? LOL, dude i was a bigger fan of MMA then, and if i remember correctly all the guys you mentioned were just starting out in the UFC during the first Penn and Hughes. Maybe stupid Dana White don't know what he's doing huh, hey maybe you can lead the UFC, i'm sure you'll have more success than he has! LOL, i mean yah Dana REALLY messed up the UFC and MMA huh???

and who did in the re-genesis days of the division, for the record i rumbled about sherk getting a shot with no fights too, yes bj is the best in the ufc at 155, likely overall, like to see penn vs. melendez maybe penn vs. kawajiri before making the call but he is the odds on favorite
doesnt change the fact that a win over pulver and losses to hughes and gsp hardly qualifies for a title shot
i agree completely with u, everybody rides bj's dick.....i'm tired of fuckin hearing his name.....i hope sherk tears his head off so i won't have 2 hear about him n e more
LOL, well you're hoping on a long shot there! BJ Penn's God-given talents are second to none, he knows this so that's why he gets lazy and takes it for granted several times in the past.......resulted in some of his losses, fact! But a focussed, well-conditioned BJ is UNBEATABLE........only person who can beat BJ when his mind, heart, and body is prepared is well, BJ!!! yah, you'll stop hearing about BJ when BJ says it's time to quit, till then better get used to him! LMAO
and b.j penn is my favourite fighter in the world but i have the sense to agree that dana and the ufc does favour him a lot and he didnt earn the title shot. I think they were still trying to cash in from his stint on tuf.
As for Penn not being credible and not being liked? Penn continues to prove outside of the ring his phenomenal success in MMA is greater than himself. He is big in building and strengthening community. He has been approachable to fans everywhere outside of the octagon. He's worked with the Make A Wish Foundation, check out the Make a Wish Foundation post on him. That's why his fans stand up and defend their hero in BJ Penn. Period.
You go ahead and lay out the list of all the possible UFC fighters? Hughes wanted BJ Penn. GSP wanted BJ Penn. Pulver wanted BJ Penn. Even now, Sherk says he wants BJ Penn. Let's skip to the facts---All the best wants to fight BJ Penn. Again, now that he's on top he will have to defend the belt. Now stop talking in circles. BJ has earned the respect of fighters around the globe to answer your question on deserving. Let's see who comes knocking?
penn's a phenomenal fighter, but also fights dirty. the reason i think so is that he used dirty tactics in both his fights with pulver and with those vs. gsp and his second fight with hughes. here, i only mention that when pulver staggered penn in the fifth round of their first fight, he bought time by kicking him directly in the groin.
Come on. You must be having delusions. Not even Pulver thinks Penn was fighting dirty. You must have watching that fight and the other fights on drugs. Buying time? Please you must have more than this to call someone a dirty fighter. Your comments just goes to show people will go to all lengths to discredit Penn. What else do you have and come up with? Pulver has multiple Youtube spots talking about dirty fighting done by him. Penn has spots coaching clean grappling tech. You're ridiculous!
You should go check how much it cost's any organization to pay for drug test's across the industry. It is expensive, and it is easier to say fighters are clean, than to admit a loss of a champion. Sherk is like one of the first in the sport. Look at the the Mitchell Report, what a waste of our tax money with all the gaps and blind accusation. Even the long established MLB had problems with dealing with it. The NFL, MLB, and Olympic sports are challenged with clean athletes. This is a new UFC.
They came up with the Ultimate Fighter reality series to get into the "reality" game on TV. They wanted to create a legitimate way to find or develop UFC lightweight fighters. Fact remains it is HARD TO FIND LW's to build up the LW DIVISION. Fan's like you and me keep complaining how many of the UFC cards stink! But, still we want UFC to be ethically-physically better than the PRIDE/K-1? BJ Penn has proven he is BOTH! Why else do they give automatic top billing in other organization? They know!
the TUF series was ur right for reality tv wave but it was not for 155 pound fighters
it wasn't till the 5th season that they used LWs and actually 155 fighters seem to be the easiest to find, for example, how many fight of the year candidates were 155 fights? how many fans really know that theres basically 2 worldwide acknowledged names in the UFC at LW?
and im not sure if any MMA org can stand greatly on ethics
Ultimately, Penn deserves the best chances to the title because he gives the UFC the chance to have a "ultimate champion" in the LW division in BJ, Matt Hughes and Pulver did it for a decent amount of time. D. White is also depending on credibility and as well as likeabiltiy. How many MMA promoters are willing to take the responsibility to make sure their fighters are clean? How many in the LW divisions across the globe are clean? Why did they come up with the U. fighter series? Because...?
some solid points there actually although the UFC does not have anything to do with clean fighters, thats the athletic commissions although the UFC could take a harder line with those caught if they chose (they don't actually but are better than most) any american org in existance does the same testing.
The next question is with BJ with the belt. Who is going to take it from him? The search for fighters to sign with the UFC is a tough challenge. The fighter needs to be clean. They need to have the desire to enter the UFC. Now with Penn at the top maybe there will be more interest? We can see you're a huge Fitch fan. Come out and say you want to date him. You pretty much answered your own questions. Let's see how Sherk does against BJ Penn so you can keep whining?
and u say the desire to be in the ufc? thats the desire to make in gomi's case 1/10th the money he can make in japan? in hellboys and ishidas case saying heres half the money ur contract says but we're giving marcus aurellio a 20k raise
the ufc is a business and unfortunately is not really interested in having the best fighters, they want the best they can have and be cheap
You're right they aren't afraid to be cheap in this still "NEW" MMA game. Fighters come a dime a dozen when it comes to looking for fame and recognition. Everybody wants to call themselves the best without panning out. You and your anti-Penn buddys who waste everybodies elses time subscribing to each others Youtube post only see the half. Talk about hypocrits? Why call Penn "one-of the best grapplers ITW/if not the best" then in another breath come out and say "why does he deserve the best?
not saying he doesnt deserve the best, just general frustration in the concept of earning a shot, such as why does someone have to beat 5 or 6 opponents, some people high quality and someone else gets a title shot with a 1-2 record in their current stint, its not just penn, not a big fan of nog's title shot after 1 win or even rampages or hughes getting the shot after beating lytle
Your point is well taken. Yet, it doesn't seem like you've figured out the facts on why Penn got the title shot? Have you figured in that most of the top ranked fighters in the UFC want to fight the best to prove their worth a championship? Have you figured in BJ Penn runs his career like a business? That's what the UFC is, it's a business. Did you figure in that with BJ Penn at the top of the fight card other fighter's might make their way to try and take the belt? The next question?
u say top ranked ufc fighters want to fight the best and there is a lot of truth to that but the BEST at 155 are not in the UFC, proven anyways, while the ufc may have some of the best fighters , at a certain point u have to beat ranked fighters to be ranked, the ufc only has 2 top 10 155ers (penn and sherk) so if u want to fight the precieved best at 155 u really have to go elsewhere
i really dont care to c karo fitch or anyone really anyway...so quit bitchin and enjoy watching bj win ...he did beat joe stevensons ass..hands down..and always gave a good fight..so if joe deserved to be their ..then the hell with what ur saying...i want the guy who doesnt deserve 2 be there then...lol..bj is bad ass ..And If You Dont Know Now You kNOW......ROGGAH DAT....
you gotta understand this from a promoter's stand point. being a big boxing fan, i can easily tell you Penn deserved the fight because this is the only way Dana White can make it a PPV fight. All those other names you mentioned have no draw to people who don't follow UFC too often. Whether you like him or not, he's what made UFC 80 PPV worthy. It's all about the Benjamins.
What people fail to see is that UFC is fucked over by Dana White. Who is trying to monopolize this MMA business. He holds rights through contracts over all these fighters, and promotes these fights as a business. So while you look at it through a truly logical and professional standpoint, White looks at it asking, "what names can i throw out there, to get more money in my pockets?"
the politics are sketchy i will agree, but bj deserves his success, his cardio and attitude is where it should be and he is set to conquer all in his path in my opinion, and it will start with sean 'the steroid shark' sherk.
One last pair of thoughts: I see Fitch and GSP in the main discussion as being a bit unrelated since we're talking about a LW title fight, and that their misfortunes are more a product of TUF 6 mucking things up. Also, most people considered Joe to be a top contender for the LW belt and was even on some top 10 lists. Since BJ made Joe look like an amateur in that fight, I'd say BJ deserved it.
The only person in the debate is Florian, but his problem is that he's already fought Sherk and looked less than spectacular in doing so.
As for guys like JZ, and no offense to you Mike, but I honestly think that you would have acknowledged that he obviously has deep ties and commitments to K1 so any kind of activity with the UFC in the near future would be highly unlikely.
As far as there being nobody else to challenge for the title:
Huerta had recently fought and hasn't beaten enough top competition. Tyson Griffin has but still needs to do a bit more to erase the controversial decisions and loss to Edgar. Edgar is a good pick but recently fought. Thomas, Fisher, And Tavares all recently lost. Lauzon suffers from the same problems as Huerta.
yes but a win over pulver and losses to GSP and Hughes isnt a terribly inspiring deal
Florian's wins over Robinson and Thomas are very solid
The UFC loves saying that Huerta is proven, with wins over dangerous opponents like alberto crane, loenard Garcia and so on (yes its bull but its what they say) and they slated this bout sometime ago, would not have taken much to make it edgar or another
To put the losses in perspective though, Penn pushed GSP harder than just about anyone (I see the Serra loss as more of a fluke). GSP more or less had to resort to stalling on the ground to win that fight, and Penn was schooling Hughes before he injured himself. Even if they are losses, It's not like BJ is losing to bums.
I like Metallica, but not Nothing Else Matters. One of their more overrated songs in my opinion. I prefer the faster stuff (Creeping Death, Disposable Heroes, etc.)
he is a star and the UFC wants the stars to be Champs ....question to you? who do you think deserved to be in that fight?Frankie Edgar?I am a Penn fan ...but I agree with you......the UFC needs more cards they don't have to all be pay per views but mid range cards so contenders can fight and sort out who gets legitimate title shots....Penn should be the champ for a long time but i agree your point ....Fitch will be next in line for a shot after the card in Montreal....no question
good points although it is true that he and sherk are their only reconized worldwide stars, this doesnt change that the ufc really is able to market anyone at star level and people WILL buy it so thats not really the be end of all
another example is keith jardine , of course he was ko`d by alexander but he has recent wins over liddell , griffin and goviea and he gets absolutly no mention ,plus he only gets 7000 per fight...another example of the ufc/public applause
sometimes the ufc seems to roll on public demand,to the ufc he`s a perfect poster boy for their lw champ..dana white keeps claiming his win over gomi makes him number one in the world but as you stated you still need wins to become that number one guy. excellent vid ,5 stars
Be careful Mike the BJ fan don't care about all of that.. The simple logic of "earning" a shot at the title doesn't seem to apply to BJ seeing he is 3 and 3 since 2005
The UFC couldn't just sign JZ, Ishida or Melendez to come in and fight for the title.

Isldstorm 4 years ago
BJ took no.2 GSP down to the wire in a contested fight, makes him 3rd in my book, so when GSP goes down, who should fill in?
I don't know how you can discredit his record, when it's his record and his showing in those fights that gives the UFC every reason to give him the shots.
1st and 2nd shots at light weight he earned, 3rd shot in the welterweight was Dana's fault, 4th shot that was in welterweight was to settle the discord over the GSP fight, and 5th again was earned by his record.
Isldstorm 4 years ago
BTW, I'm a GSP fan, I just don't see anyone putting up a reasonable rebuttal this vid.

ultimatefighter08 4 years ago
i could name a few guys who are more deserving than bj......roger huerta for one, who is on a 6 fight win streak just in the ufc...i believe he has show that he has got what it takes to be in the elite......also tyson griffin is up in the ranks as well....bj in my mind hasn't beat any opponent within the 155 division to convince me that he deserves a shot....i mean dear god it was only his second fight back at 155, he should have at least had to work his way up, not start at the top
ultimatefighter08 4 years ago
well it's obvious 2 see that u are as well a PENN NUT SUCKER........i have my favorite fighters and i don't praise them, i don't praise anyone as a god because there is only one true GOD.....so what if i'm a hater, fuck y'all who dispise me, i didn't think penn deservered the shot....he hasn't even beating top tear guys at 155, the only guy he beat AT 155 in the ufc with any significance was jens pulver, big whoop......i respect bj's skills but as a person, i don't like him at all
ultimatefighter08 4 years ago
it's so striking to me how newbees to the UFC and MMA don't really respect or know BJ.
HawaiiRudeboy 4 years ago
and by the way i am not a so-called "newbee" as u say.....and i never said i didn't respect BJ's skills, go look at my comment if u don't remember, NO I DID NOT.....i said i was tired of hearing able him, yes we all know he's good, yes we all know who he's beaten, we all know the same shit we hear out of everyone of his fans' mouths....yes bj has skills, we know that, i just get sick of hearing his praised like he is an mma god....now respect that
ultimatefighter08 4 years ago
i have immense respect for his skills and i made that damn well clear
this argument has literally nothing to do with his skills its about earning a title shot
ill have my rant about sherk hell i said many of the same things about randy, never made a video and in hindsight should have and maybe id get less flack

okay to all you BJ doubters and haters out there who question why BJ gets all these title shots and how everyone "rides his balls." LOL, okay okay, i'll try to put it in very simple terms so you dumbasses can't get confused okay? BJ PENN was chosen by God, made lucky by God, blessed by God WITH 'PRODIGY' CALIBER TALENTS IN THE FIGHTING GAME!!! LOL, first he mastered BJJ in like 3 years, then progressed to MMA. he gets all these title shots B/C THE REAL EXPERTS, not u, KNOW HOW TALENTED HE IS!

i still think a shot needs to be earned
penn could have fought 1 more legit opponent and with a victory and good showing both likely have earned a shot, does it kill u to wait for a man to earn a shot?
and u cant tell me that first shot at Hughes was not huge BS, a man coming off a failed attempt at the LW goes up WW and gets a title shot when the likes of GSP, Karo and even Nick Diaz were more entitled

Period.
scottboddy 4 years ago
You go ahead and lay out the list of all the possible UFC fighters? Hughes wanted BJ Penn. GSP wanted BJ Penn. Pulver wanted BJ Penn. Even now, Sherk says he wants BJ Penn. Let's skip to the facts---All the best wants to fight BJ Penn. Again, now that he's on top he will have to defend the belt. Now stop talking in circles. BJ has earned the respect of fighters around the globe to answer your question on deserving. Let's see who comes knocking?
scottboddy 4 years ago
penn's a phenomenal fighter, but also fights dirty. the reason i think so is that he used dirty tactics in both his fights with pulver and with those vs. gsp and his second fight with hughes. here, i only mention that when pulver staggered penn in the fifth round of their first fight, he bought time by kicking him directly in the groin.
paulcowsill 4 years ago
You're ridiculous!
scottboddy 4 years ago
You should go check how much it cost's any organization to pay for drug test's across the industry. It is expensive, and it is easier to say fighters are clean, than to admit a loss of a champion. Sherk is like one of the first in the sport. Look at the the Mitchell Report, what a waste of our tax money with all the gaps and blind accusation. Even the long established MLB had problems with dealing with it. The NFL, MLB, and Olympic sports are challenged with clean athletes. This is a new UFC.
scottboddy 4 years ago
They came up with the Ultimate Fighter reality series to get into the "reality" game on TV. They wanted to create a legitimate way to find or develop UFC lightweight fighters. Fact remains it is HARD TO FIND LW's to build up the LW DIVISION. Fan's like you and me keep complaining how many of the UFC cards stink! But, still we want UFC to be ethically-physically better than the PRIDE/K-1? BJ Penn has proven he is BOTH! Why else do they give automatic top billing in other organization? They know!
scottboddy 4 years ago
the TUF series was ur right for reality tv wave but it was not for 155 pound fighters
it wasn't till the 5th season that they used LWs and actually 155 fighters seem to be the easiest to find, for example, how many fight of the year candidates were 155 fights? how many fans really know that theres basically 2 worldwide acknowledged names in the UFC at LW?
and im not sure if any MMA org can stand greatly on ethics
Meodread 4 years ago
Ultimately, Penn deserves the best chances to the title because he gives the UFC the chance to have a "ultimate champion" in the LW division in BJ, Matt Hughes and Pulver did it for a decent amount of time. D. White is also depending on credibility and as well as likeabiltiy. How many MMA promoters are willing to take the responsibility to make sure their fighters are clean? How many in the LW divisions across the globe are clean? Why did they come up with the U. fighter series? Because...?
scottboddy 4 years ago
some solid points there actually although the UFC does not have anything to do with clean fighters, thats the athletic commissions although the UFC could take a harder line with those caught if they chose (they don't actually but are better than most) any american org in existance does the same testing.
Meodread 4 years ago
and the ufc on spike is to bring in casual viewers who aren't going to order PPV without a wetting of the appetite so to speak
Meodread 4 years ago
The next question is with BJ with the belt. Who is going to take it from him? The search for fighters to sign with the UFC is a tough challenge. The fighter needs to be clean. They need to have the desire to enter the UFC. Now with Penn at the top maybe there will be more interest? We can see you're a huge Fitch fan. Come out and say you want to date him. You pretty much answered your own questions. Let's see how Sherk does against BJ Penn so you can keep whining?
scottboddy 4 years ago
betting on bj vs. sherk
and u say the desire to be in the ufc? thats the desire to make in gomi's case 1/10th the money he can make in japan? in hellboys and ishidas case saying heres half the money ur contract says but we're giving marcus aurellio a 20k raise
the ufc is a business and unfortunately is not really interested in having the best fighters, they want the best they can have and be cheap
Meodread 4 years ago
You're right they aren't afraid to be cheap in this still "NEW" MMA game. Fighters come a dime a dozen when it comes to looking for fame and recognition. Everybody wants to call themselves the best without panning out. You and your anti-Penn buddys who waste everybodies elses time subscribing to each others Youtube post only see the half. Talk about hypocrits? Why call Penn "one-of the best grapplers ITW/if not the best" then in another breath come out and say "why does he deserve the best?
scottboddy 4 years ago
not saying he doesnt deserve the best, just general frustration in the concept of earning a shot, such as why does someone have to beat 5 or 6 opponents, some people high quality and someone else gets a title shot with a 1-2 record in their current stint, its not just penn, not a big fan of nog's title shot after 1 win or even rampages or hughes getting the shot after beating lytle
Meodread 4 years ago
Your point is well taken. Yet, it doesn't seem like you've figured out the facts on why Penn got the title shot? Have you figured in that most of the top ranked fighters in the UFC want to fight the best to prove their worth a championship? Have you figured in BJ Penn runs his career like a business? That's what the UFC is, it's a business. Did you figure in that with BJ Penn at the top of the fight card other fighter's might make their way to try and take the belt? The next question?
scottboddy 4 years ago
u say top ranked ufc fighters want to fight the best and there is a lot of truth to that but the BEST at 155 are not in the UFC, proven anyways, while the ufc may have some of the best fighters , at a certain point u have to beat ranked fighters to be ranked, the ufc only has 2 top 10 155ers (penn and sherk) so if u want to fight the precieved best at 155 u really have to go elsewhere

good video , you earned my predicton...i was wondering where you rank kid yamamoto in featherweight?
pridelegend39 4 years ago
you gotta understand this from a promoter's stand point. being a big boxing fan, i can easily tell you Penn deserved the fight because this is the only way Dana White can make it a PPV fight. All those other names you mentioned have no draw to people who don't follow UFC too often. Whether you like him or not, he's what made UFC 80 PPV worthy. It's all about the Benjamins.
King0fTheRing 4 years ago
What people fail to see is that UFC is fucked over by Dana White. Who is trying to monopolize this MMA business. He holds rights through contracts over all these fighters, and promotes these fights as a business. So while you look at it through a truly logical and professional standpoint, White looks at it asking, "what names can i throw out there, to get more money in my pockets?"
King0fTheRing 4 years ago

One last pair of thoughts: I see Fitch and GSP in the main discussion as being a bit unrelated since we're talking about a LW title fight, and that their misfortunes are more a product of TUF 6 mucking things up. Also, most people considered Joe to be a top contender for the LW belt and was even on some top 10 lists. Since BJ made Joe look like an amateur in that fight, I'd say BJ deserved it.
brianisebay 4 years ago
Gomi and Sakurai are both possibilities but of course they're only in talks. Signings for title fights are still a ways off.
brianisebay 4 years ago
The only person in the debate is Florian, but his problem is that he's already fought Sherk and looked less than spectacular in doing so.
As for guys like JZ, and no offense to you Mike, but I honestly think that you would have acknowledged that he obviously has deep ties and commitments to K1 so any kind of activity with the UFC in the near future would be highly unlikely.
brianisebay 4 years ago
JZ was just a name that came to mind
and Florian could still be done, i mean chuck fucked up babalu once and then again, second fight still sold and florian has a much better popularity

Lauzon suffers from the same problems as Huerta.
brianisebay 4 years ago
yes but a win over pulver and losses to GSP and Hughes isnt a terribly inspiring deal
Florian's wins over Robinson and Thomas are very solid
The UFC loves saying that Huerta is proven, with wins over dangerous opponents like alberto crane, loenard Garcia and so on (yes its bull but its what they say) and they slated this bout sometime ago, would not have taken much to make it edgar or another
Meodread 4 years ago
To put the losses in perspective though, Penn pushed GSP harder than just about anyone (I see the Serra loss as more of a fluke). GSP more or less had to resort to stalling on the ground to win that fight, and Penn was schooling Hughes before he injured himself. Even if they are losses, It's not like BJ is losing to bums.
brianisebay 4 years ago
while true they remain losses and a 1-2 record since returning is really not the record of a number 1 contender

Be careful Mike the BJ fan don't care about all of that.. The simple logic of "earning" a shot at the title doesn't seem to apply to BJ seeing he is 3 and 3 since 2005
