@TCKT42 Watch the whole DVD, and he explains the stick flip. It serves a strong purpose in his sound and flow, and even though it looks cool as hell, I was impressed even more to learn how much thought goes into such a simple gesture as flipping the stick over. Definitely a master of his art
@beeblebrux2112 i call them "chop shots", not sure how he refers to thim in this video, but they dont sound right played on the butt end of the stick. so you have to flip the stick around
You'll hear a few hiccups in his performance throughout this video... does anybody have any idea if DMB had slowed down #41 by the point he recorded this? (1997ish I think) To those that don't know, listen to the studio #41 then a live track from as early as 1998. The song is noticeably slower and lacks the reggae bridge. While the track kicks ass in its studio form as an album track, the live version works way better for the live improvisation Boyd does, IMO.
Actually Kishy that is not true. He also plays close handed. The above statement is true. He learned opened handed because he didn't know any better. Once he started following other drummers such as buddy rich he also learned other variations of playing styles and techniques hence why he can play everything on both hands. Wouldn't matter if you put the ride on the right hand side he would play it the exact same way if he wanted...
@eyeofthevortex From what I've seen of him, the only time he plays close handed is when basically all of his hi-hat stuff is on off-hand beats, like in Crush. Yes, he can play entirely ambidextrously, but he is at heart a left-handed drummer. Look at his fastest rolls in Say Goodbye. Even though it would make more sense to roll down the kit with a right hand lead, he leads the roll left-handed because it's more comfortable to him.
@BooDrummaBoi21 Yes, this song is called #41. It was the 41st song written by Dave Matthews. It used to have different titles at first, but it came to this. My favorite DMB song.
neil peart of rush was/is awesome...but i think carter takes the cake...by FAR...I've drummed all my life, and I'll never be half as good...nevermind the fact that Dave Matthews writes awesome songs, and carter just pushes them up to the clouds where they belong
@chessic4 Well it's not really his off hand. He's an open handed drummer, and always plays left handed like that. That's why his ride is on his left too.
@chessic4 He grew up playing with a weird set up, hes just learned to hit his hats with the left and it stuck when he realized that his setup was unusual. so he has a weird variation of hand techniques and coordination in both hands which is probably what makes him so variable and flexible as a drummer. dude is a monster.
Don't even really like their band all that much...But GOD Carter Beauford is redic.

@800adam008 Beginning of the sax solo. Notice he's about a quarter-note off of the music and it takes a couple of fills to get back in with it.
