  • Damien Hirst that is.

  • I can't find anyone that puts on a better art show than Damien Gift!!!! He is successful because his is the best at creating simple art with a universal message. So it sells......big deal!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • I like Damien hirst's work but it is just becoming commercialist and repetitive, its loosing its apeal.

  • "don't hate the player, hate the game" comes to my mind when i think of his art.....he is just trying his best to make the most flashy pieces of crap that rich folks can buy.....

and his success is showing us how some parts of society work....it's a all a big bubble!

  • true symbols of power and lust.

  • @HAPPYBEARSOLUTIONS I'll buy stupidity and conspicuous consumption...power and lust is giving the work way too much credit...

  • GREAT....

  • Damian is the biggest example that people don't buy the art...they buy the artist. Whatever he touch he makes sells

  • Riddle me this...if Damien's "auction" back in 2008 was such a success, why is he exhibiting at Gagosian and White Cube? Methinks the auction was a failure...

  • @CatZula silly, the economy collapsed. White Cube and Gagosian show some of the best contemporary art out there.

  • LOL, I appreciate your pluck but since Damien is now running around hinting that the poor critical response to his "paintings" was, in part, a response to the great success of the auction, I'd suggest there's more to the story than him getting cozy with his dealers because of the economic downturn. ;) (Besides, wasn't the auction designed to revolutionize how art is sold and help maximize artists' profits?)...so, yes, I agree, the auction flopped and he's back with his price-inflating dealers.

  • @CatZula money, money money... boring. I don't look to Hirst for painting. I don't care about auctions, I like the Art. Dealers are how we see the Art. So I disagree. The auction is for the marketplace, the gallery for the Art. Don't blame the messengers:)

  • LOL, couldn't agree with you more that money is boring...but Gagosian and Damien both interweave the two...so we end up with paintings of precious stones, fake precious stones, fake diamonds ensconced in gold cabinets...gold, gold, gold...even the severed cow head misses the mark, as, despite the specific symbolism, functionally it's just another golden idol offered up to worship...Damien used to make somewhat interesting art but he's become all about money...just saying he's flubbed that too

  • @CatZula money is the content, Art is the vehicle. I don't think he flubbed anything.........i prefer other stuff. He is an artist, I respect that a lot. :)

  • @3idiot3 I think it's better to respect Art (than a specific Artist)...which means looking at art critically. I don't see the distinction between money as content of the art and art as a vehicle that you're drawing. Damien's primary use of art these days is to depict money to make money--he was even quoted recently saying, "I always think that money is a fantastic tool to get people to take you seriously." This work is just fodder meant to make cash so the public will embrace his "painting."

  • 'beauty and profoundness'?? okay.. really is a case in point for "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" . all I experience when I look at it is 'Expensive Trash" that says nothing! does anyone notice the satanic aspect to his "work" ??

  • @steelumber thanks for nothing. Satanic? grow up.

  • @3idiot3 would love to hear what profound insights you may have about his work? since you didn't bother to explain.

  • @steelumber read a book, or don't.

  • Note nobody is looking at the art, and nobody is gasping at its 'beauty or profoundness.

  • @TomHendricksMusea Hirst will go down in history, your complaints will not.

  • He's is going to be in the History books...he is not going away. And his body of work will be studied for years to come. Either accept it, or change it. Either way bitch ing about it on Youtube isn't doing anything positive.

  • How about using it as an example of what is wrong with mod art and what the art revolution is against. There is a back to basics art that makes NYC art like this, look like an emperor with no clothes in an ivory tower. Take away the sunglasses, mousse, and makeup and this type of art has nothing left - it makes cotton candy look substantial. See the groundbreaking Snake Oil video to put it all in perspective. Real art is making a comeback - maybe NYC will get the message some day. Thanks.

  • You people and your "feelings." I prefer superficiality. It is way more naturally human. Everything is a shiny veneer, it's how we have survived as a species; by studying the physicality of our world and never looking any deeper than we need to. Call me a Psychopath but I just don't think that emotional substantiality is any reflection of the world we live in.

  • "everyones stupid except me" ~Homer Simpson

  • Oh and love the over the neck shooting job...very stealthy.

  • Everything is so shiny and expensive. I love it!

  • Anybody wants to have a good laugh? Have a look at the video called "Hitler learns that MOCA job goes to Deitch"...

  • Go away, DH. Go visit a petting zoo.

  • John McEnroe at 0.44...

  • Nice catch claureic.

  • This type of modern art is the salon art of our day. Time for a revolution against what the trios of galleries, rich patron, and trendy artist have become. James talk about the manifestos of the new art as stated by either Musea or the Stuckists. Both are back to basics art movements where quality is more valued than trendiness. Thanks. and best wishes.

  • @TomHendricksMusea The Stuckists are the Sean Hannity's of the Art World.

  • I'm for quality and against trendiness too.

  • ick, ick and more useless, misguided arrogance....ick :( ....anyone who implies 'trendiness' and 'trendy artists' is a banal follower..........fuck your quality!

  • James, what's your take on the "Snake Oil" conceptual art video? It uses conceptual art to protest the abuses of conceptual art. Check it out.

  • Thanks James!

  • Pink Floyd , Ferrari , Rolex, Damien Hirst.

The Golden Calf from the lehman collapse time frame is my fav.

    Thanks james

  • Someone should curate a show with Damien Hirst and Santiago Seirra.

  • PERHAPS This means the End of An Era Of being suspicious of Capitalism and wealth.

I think it's probably time to accept all this, and work within the capitalistic framework?

The Calf can represent Hedonism from the story of Abraham and the 10 commandments. Hedonism and wealth is accepted while folks trying to be good and enforce morals upon these attitudes have nothing to argue.

    At the same time

    Hedonism=wealth=vanity=temporality

  • @kidluna I hope it's not the end of "being suspicious of Capitalism and wealth" (for a few people at the cost of all the others) - I hope it's the final end of capitalism and wealth FOR A FEW GREEDY PEOPLE AT THE COST OF ALL THE OTHERS IN THE WORLD (who will come and take their part away)!

  • get a job.

  • Awesome James!

  • let's all completely subtract the argument that this is a wealthy artist, etc. just view the pieces on their merit as if they were made by an unknown "struggling" artist. they would be ruled to be self serving decorative pieces for the high end design industry. almost art.

  • Can someone please pay this man for his excellent reporting, so his fantastic wife can retire! James you take us on a journey of fine art for everyone....60 Minutes hire this man!

(new member of the Kate fan club...)

  • Yes Kate, the Commander In Chief, and Executive Producer!

And don't miss the James Kalm Frames New York on Babelgun programs as well.

  • I agree

  • i too agree

  • James... your the best... Love what you do KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK

  • I absolutly despise Hirst's work. I can totally see death, decay, and the amount of money put into the work as being a conceptual view....but seriously...his work is shit. apparently the art world has come to the conclusion of millionaires will buy art for how much money was put into the work.

  • I think you people are way too kind to Damien - I enjoyed watching the babes more than his art

  • I hate Damien hirst work. To me his numb skull head covered with diamonds symbolised how alot of the snobbery Art world is dead & its all about the money...in my eyes he's not a Artist at all. he has no charisma & is unable to connect . he should embalm him self id pay £5 for that peice to let my dog pee on it

  • @strawwoodclaw I think you've missed the point of Hirst work, or maybe you've actually nailed it. His work is 100% about commodification and consumption, and he's not trying to hide that, his skull was called "for the love of god". And you say he's not connecting to anyone? Well he certainly has connected with all the rich sob's that buy his work. Oh and by your tone, he's definitely made some sort of a connection with you ;)

  • @seemorgrillz , The rich only buy his work to show off , or because next door owns one that cost 2 million so they buy one that cost 3 million , it has nothing to do with loving a piece of Art work. It's a Joke & it stinks , Van Gough , Van Vliet, Picasso are what I call Artist . just because something gets a reaction it doesn't make it Art I could paint CUNT on a canvas it would shock some people but that doesn't make it Art, these people resort to these antics as they have nothing el

  • @seemorgrillz He's not connecting with anybody...the skull was purchased by a group of investors who (in large part) included Hirst himself. It's all smoke and mirrors. Also, not sure if you've ever talked with any of these collectors...they haven't a clue about the commodification angle...they just see the money exchanging hands (or seeming to exchange hands) and want in...meanwhile Damien just keeps cranking out skulls and butterflies.

  • Its very interesting to see how his work polarizes people.I feel his work to be a glamorization of decadence, wealth, blatant disregard for life and humanity.I find his work to be obscenely vulgar but at the same time aesthetically pleasing. This dichotomy makes me nauseous when viewing his works.

Sweets are bad for your health.

    Thanks James!

  • As all of these self important glam folks dressed in black crowd around trying to get an audience with Mr. Hirst (and largely ignore the items on the walls), somewhere legions of anonymous people are starving to death.

    Thanks James!

  • c'mon. 'people are starving'. !? Can't blame Art. Mr Hirsts work embodies OUR decadence. Our diamonds are equated with disease and death. Simple stuff. And! Quit picking on the crowds. Openings are free and fun for hard working people. Openings are about the crowd, the rest of the exhibition is for the Art. thanks mr Kalm :)

  • OUR decadence? You´ll have to remind me the last time myself or anyone in my community (I live in Mexico) commissioned a piece of artwork made out of 8,000 diamonds.

  • YOU brought up 'starving people'. Right. So, anyone with running water and plumbing and access to healthcare and a functioning society are DECADENT when compared to the 'starving' that you cite. That is my point., and maybe Mr. Hirsts too. WHY did YOU bring up the starving?

  • @MrWowforever Very simple answer:

Because the "decadents" stole their goods from the starving people and the "first" world stole their wealth from the "third" world, this is an historical fact. (And the "third" world's people will come and take away their part. - Look to the border of Mexico and look to the boat-people on the Mediterranian Sea between africa and europe)

  • Why are you telling me this? I asked Calebengler why they felt compelled to cite the 'starving'. Thanks for nothing.

  • @MrWowforever Yes it was a very hard and "honourable" work to bring the slaves from africa to america

  • Again, what are you talking about???????

  • @MrWowforever It's an art-project, haha

  • ....again, thanks for nothing.

  • Interesting you picked "Money For Nothing" as the background song. Is that commentary? ;-)

  • damien hirst fuck you

  • To ar4216: Just to continue our discussion, what I like in Hirst's work: vanity, death, decay, implicit irony aimed at the very billionaires who buy his works. Reminds me of Warhol. Also, the show now at White Cube in London, a continuation of the wallace show: no longer childish imitations of Bacon, but real painterly works and mastered technique. The man is one thing, the artist another...
