This is a speech that should be heard in every nation's capital. It is more timely now than ever before. What I find to be the most intolerable is the intentional corruption of what Eisenhower calls our "Spiritual Nature". Of course, the same intentional corruption of the human "hardwired" "Spiritual Nature" has been carried out by ruling elites on every continent. We lost our way as a race. I hope it doesn't take an asteroid or climate change to remind us why there are ten commandments.
Oh hai youtube, just thought i'd ask you how you got the ability to read a man's mind through a video...oh whats that? you cant?, then why in bloody hell do you claim to know what ike was thinking? quote him to the letter or dont say what he "meant"
And "reading between the lines" is impossible to do without giving your own inflection to it, take his words, state them, and state your opinion after, stating your opinion first proves nothing except for that you don't value his words
Regretfully you are not being accurate enough in your interpretation of his words. Eisehower gradually became more progressive in his own life, this is the kind of maturation that all human beings undergo whilst they reflect and dare to introspect.
Wherever and whenever, we need conservative forces and progressive forces as well, in equal measures, like Ike is stating: it is all about the right balance.
@OdeonNijmegen Excuse me, you're calling Eisenhower a progressive? A man who opposed atheism as a legitimate choice of belief? A man who supported America's growing military involvement in Vietnam? A man who barely involve him in the fight for civil rights?
Eisenhower was a mlitary man, pure and simple. He was not a progressive.
In other words never let progressives gain control of this country or they will use our power and technology against us. To interpret it any other way is a distortion of his message.
The problem with republicans is that they actually have the idea that a market can exist without regulation. In other words, they think they can actually run government like a business and, quite simply speaking, government is NOT a business. Government itself is regulation....if you dont allow regulation this country will be controlled by corperations which is exactly what Eisenhower was warning us.
I grew up and named myself after him.He was the last Republican president to be a true father of the nation.I'm not American but I weep for you America
Wow, it's amazing to see how many points he scores in this speech -- he correctly identifies all the problems of our modern society, from the military complex, to the rule of intellectual elites in academia, to the massive spending programs, to the polarizing hatred between the left and right.

He also supports a progressive tax with breaks for the lower and middle class. also gold/silver standard, wow, you have no idea what you're talking about do you.

@Aizen88 I wasn't implying that Eisenhower would support me.
I have no love for Eisenhower or any other president in my short lifetime.

The health care reform package was a gross overreach of government authority, no matter how well intentioned, which will have many negative side effects.

As hard as it is to see the entire landscape from where you are standing. It really seems quite astounding that Ike was so absolutely dead on right about what was to come. he even was able to understand that "improvements" to our agriculture may not be in our best interest. (Monsanto). I tend to think that he was privy to many things that were being planned as far back as then. And without sufficient time to change the course of things. My fellow Americans, I like to steal money and help the rich. Tonight while u sleep the big banks will steal money from your accounts. Thank you for understanding. God Bless my fat bank account!
He warned us. He really warned us. We did not listen. We were in denial that this could happen in the USA, the Beacon of freedom. He was right, he IS right, me must stand up again to preserve the freedom of which was given to us by those who died for it. At ALL costs. It is our duty as Americans, as was our former President, to preserve the Constitution and country against enemies, foreign and domestic. Our freedom comes at a cost. Are you willing to pay for it? I know I am.
This man was, perhaps, one of the last American presidents who functioned independently of big business and truly had the best interest of the U.S. citizen in mind. Don't fool yourself - there is NO presidential candidate we have seen for the past 20 years at least that is not intimately tied to the Military Industrial complex and who does not heed the siren call of corporate money rather than reason. If you think Obama is different perhaps you should take a look at his resume.
Americans must understand greed will destroy us in the end. It seems that we are a nation of hypocrites. Congressmen and women are bought by lobbyist each and everyday. If we don't change this soon, I fear the our best days are now behind us. Obama is just doing his best. Now that he has planted the crops of Americas future success, we can't wait for the harvest. Harvest time starts this year. Watch a great up turn in our economy will be in full swing in 2011, just in time for his reeelection.
I'm afraid I must disagree with you. Politicians are not bought once they are in their positions, it is clear that they are there in the first place only due to the sponsorship of corporate money. The U.S. political system serves the interests of big business first and foremost in EVERY case. Republicans and democrats alike are all in the pockets of the same people. Unfortunately Obama is not an exception. If you look at his professional history you will see he is a corporate servant like others
" Politicians are not bought once they are in their positions". Oh really. Then why is the health insurance lobbyist spending over a million dollars a day to defeat healthcare reform?
"Unfortunately Obama is not an exception". To that I reply if you go to D.C. you will wake up with fleas. When the economy rebounds and America sleeps better at night, I wonder if you will feel the same way, about him?
Our system of lobbying merely proves that our senators and congressmen are for sale to the highest bidder. I wonder how you are making your predictions about "the great economic rebound of 2011" or are so confident that Obama's hand alone will bring us back into the black. His stimulus plans so far have given BILLIONS to the very corrupt financial institutions that landed us in this mess... with which they gave bonuses to their chairmen. Surely that is a policy that favors the American people?
"His stimulus plans so far have given BILLIONS to the very corrupt financial institutions that landed us in this mess".
DUDE YOU KEEP FORGETTING THEY HAVE TO PAY THAT MONEY BACK PLUS INTEREST . They want the gov. out of their books ASAP. So they can be free to steal even more. Yes I am sure of 2011. Can't you see some of the crops have even now began to get ripe.
I just feel that Obama is for the people all the people. Not just the rich few.
Sorry to reply so many times so quickly, I just wanted to give a little glimpse to the fact that Obama is as endebted to big money as any other politician. Those are only small examples. I'm not trying to be rude and I'm glad that you have faith in the president, but I think it is fairly clear that our entire political system is corrupt down to every last senator congressman and representative, and the only hope we have for TRUE change is the total reform of all of it.
It's so sad that I have to agree with you. But what if do what the French did, Off with their heads". But I feel that Obama is really trying to help all Americans and it almost time to enjoy the fruits of his labor.
No problem heh. Obviously you feel very personally tied to Obama as you and your family were positively affected by his career. I am not writing from such personal experience, I didn't even know who Obama was before his presidential campaign. All I know about him are impersonal facts which I believe show the same tendencies toward the establishment that pretty much every political career does. You are right, certain elements of big business will fight Obama...
America just like Chicago will reap the benefits of Obama. One Question my friend. Since you know so much about who gave Obama money. Did Big Oil give him any money. Because I know they sure owned Bushit. Big Oil and the Saudi's (you know the ones that actually flew the planes).
Some days, I love my fellow American each and everyday. No matter what Fixed News says. Am I to hate my fellow Americans just because they disagree with me? Sorta like religion, they say that only their beliefs will get you into heaven. You must believe in what they say. Bullshit, I believe that you just have to be a good person. Sorta like the scales of justice, but these scales are on every humans life. If you do more good than bad you go to heaven, or what ever else that is good out there.
WAKE UP MAN, Obama is a new world order puppet, democrats and republicans are one and the same, they are funded by the people, these people are the real government. The media is lying because these people own the media too. watch the obama deception and fall of the republic, here
You should look at the facts first and then establish a theory. Not establish a theory first because it bears the risk of unsonciously (or not) twisting the facts to make them fit into your theory.
So please take a carefull look. and do some research before posting crap like this.
What facts? Conspiracy arises when you are presented with so much room for doubt. I have been presented with enough information to allow me to piece a huge jigsaw together, and the world now makes perfect sense. Go back 200 years. Rothschild funded Marx, Ritter and Nitsche, whos theories founded Communism and Fascism. Two supposed opposites which I now realise are pretty much the same.
Nietzsche was extremely anti-socialist and anti-communist. The world makes perfect sense ? It sure does if you ignore the facts or get your information from websites that have an agenda. That Nietzsches theories have founded facism is just a lie. I bet you havn't read anything from him.
No I haven't got there yet. Even though it is right in front of you, I bet you haven't watched obama deception or fall of the republic, like I said, which explains how and why big business funds both sides. Read anything by Jim Marrs or Henry Makow? These are non zionist historians, and most of our school/university education in history has a zionist agenda. Google this and explain why it is wrong "House Of Rothschild: No One Can Understand What Has Happened To The Planet Without Reading This"
In Obamas eight years in the Illinois Senate, from 1996 to 2004, almost two-thirds of the money he raised for his campaigns — $296,000 of $461,000 — came from PACs, corporate contributions, or unions, according to Illinois Board of Elections records. He tapped financial services firms, real estate developers, healthcare providers, oil companies, and many other corporate interests, the records show.
Dude I saw the changes that Chicago went threw during Obama senatorial years. I have family in Chicago. All I know is that Obama made Chicago a better place to live.
While refusing money directly from federal lobbyists, who get their income from clients, Obama takes money from those clients. In the first quarter of 2007, he accepted a combined $170,000 from Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, two financial services giants that have numerous issues pending in Washington and spent a total of $4.6 million on lobbying in 2006.
Why are you so bent on who gives him money? I bet big business America spend even more money trying to defeat him. After all Big business wants all the money and say fuck you little man.
I, being more to the Left in politics always trumpeted the warning about he industrial complex. I have always found George Washington's Farewell address as the best of all best for the founding of this country. But Eisenhower's is call to balance the new with our traditions of government and freedom to me run right into what could be called sensible and American.
It is a freakishly foretelling speech. The policy makers in this country (US) seem to leave the history books on the shelf. It might have been a bad idea to elect the head of a defense contractor to the vice-presidency. I think there is also some history about sending large military forces into Afghanistan. Might want to read up on that as well.
" plundering for our own ease and convenience the precious resources of tomorrow " wow how could you sum up our national mindset better. i also like the part when he warn of " becoming a community of dreadful fear and hate "
Wow, what a speech, I've never seen anything but clips. It was interesting to hear the whole of his warning about "the military-industrial complex." But something that was equally interesting is the warning about the 'government-educational' complex (to parot his prior warning phrase). I wish I knew more about the context to know whether it was anti-intellectualism (like Nixon & Reagan) or a warning of how ideas can be made servants to the interests of the govt, or the power behind the govt.
He died a truly free man, but wait...he;s not dead, but still very much alive. I was 3 months old when this was made, now at 48 I've seen it for the very first time. Good on ya Dwight, you still are a great previous president!!
Ike had commanded this nation's armies and served as well. He had also dined with and played golf with the nation's industrialists and capitalists; I believe it goes without saying he knew would could be coming.
Let us all remember that each of us, have one moment in our lives when we are taken from the crowd, by fate, and given a chance to make a difference. Let us do so with all haste.
Whoa Nellie. Black & White... Grainy... Seems like 100 years ago -- not less than 50. He said: "As we peer into society's future, we ... must avoid the impulse to live only for today, plundering for our own ease and convenience the precious resources of tomorrow. We cannot mortgage the material assets of our grandchildren without risking the loss also of their politcal and spiritual heritage."
WHAT? I've heard this described as "prophetic" and "a warning"... economically so as well...
The lack of deference to Ike Eisenhower is undermining our role in the world let alone our liberties and democratic processes. You might say we live in a different world than in 1950s, but the threat then was a huge nuclear arsenal starring us right in the face. Bush also said as we address these challenges and others we cannot foresee tonight, America must maintain our moral clarity, in stark contrast to President Eisenhower who obviously foresaw a lot.
Bush said in his farewell address, the first decade of this century has been a period of consequence. He also highlighted the use of cyberspace by the government to fight the War on Terrorism. If consequence is the case, then 9/11 was the result of something, just as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were in the administrations view, a consequence of 9/11. In turn they have created possible insurmountable consequences.
The last great Republican president, but nowadays you only here the GOP lauding Reagan, Teddy Roosevelt and Lincoln. Its remarkable the difference between his farewell address and that of George W. Bush. Eisenhowers prophetic words on the Military Industrial Complex and information technology is haunting. Im sure he never had a concept of the Internet or the use of cyberspace by the government and military, but he knew that the computer would be a war fighting tool in the future.
Holy shit. "A proud confederation of mutual trust and respect", that's what we need. The great general speaks against war with an elequence unmatched till perhaps our new president.
The greatest speech of all, we didn't pay attention, we were entertained by the the mainstream media. So much foresight, so much courage my general, may God have you in eternal glory. Thanks for uploading this in its entirety and adding the subtitles. I'll spread it around!!!
He signed away all authority over the commitee handling ufo disclosure yet he warns about misplacing power to the military industrial complex. Sounds like he regrets what he did, and he should because it is the reason that we still have not had ufo disclosure to this day. 1:18 to 2:03

Watch a great up turn in our economy will be in full swing in 2011, just in time for his reeelection.
hiiamrick 2 years ago
I'm afraid I must disagree with you. Politicians are not bought once they are in their positions, it is clear that they are there in the first place only due to the sponsorship of corporate money. The U.S. political system serves the interests of big business first and foremost in EVERY case. Republicans and democrats alike are all in the pockets of the same people. Unfortunately Obama is not an exception. If you look at his professional history you will see he is a corporate servant like others
analagouswithevil 2 years ago
" Politicians are not bought once they are in their positions". Oh really. Then why is the health insurance lobbyist spending over a million dollars a day to defeat healthcare reform?
"Unfortunately Obama is not an exception". To that I reply if you go to D.C. you will wake up with fleas. When the economy rebounds and America sleeps better at night, I wonder if you will feel the same way, about him?
hiiamrick 2 years ago
Our system of lobbying merely proves that our senators and congressmen are for sale to the highest bidder. I wonder how you are making your predictions about "the great economic rebound of 2011" or are so confident that Obama's hand alone will bring us back into the black. His stimulus plans so far have given BILLIONS to the very corrupt financial institutions that landed us in this mess... with which they gave bonuses to their chairmen. Surely that is a policy that favors the American people?
analagouswithevil 2 years ago
"His stimulus plans so far have given BILLIONS to the very corrupt financial institutions that landed us in this mess".
DUDE YOU KEEP FORGETTING THEY HAVE TO PAY THAT MONEY BACK PLUS INTEREST . They want the gov. out of their books ASAP. So they can be free to steal even more. Yes I am sure of 2011. Can't you see some of the crops have even now began to get ripe.
I just feel that Obama is for the people all the people. Not just the rich few.
hiiamrick 2 years ago
Sorry to reply so many times so quickly, I just wanted to give a little glimpse to the fact that Obama is as endebted to big money as any other politician. Those are only small examples. I'm not trying to be rude and I'm glad that you have faith in the president, but I think it is fairly clear that our entire political system is corrupt down to every last senator congressman and representative, and the only hope we have for TRUE change is the total reform of all of it.
analagouswithevil 2 years ago
It's so sad that I have to agree with you. But what if do what the French did, Off with their heads". But I feel that Obama is really trying to help all Americans and it almost time to enjoy the fruits of his labor.
hiiamrick 2 years ago
Sorry my friend I feel it refreshing to find one that can debate the issues instead of personally attacking me and calling me names.
hiiamrick 2 years ago
No problem heh. Obviously you feel very personally tied to Obama as you and your family were positively affected by his career. I am not writing from such personal experience, I didn't even know who Obama was before his presidential campaign. All I know about him are impersonal facts which I believe show the same tendencies toward the establishment that pretty much every political career does. You are right, certain elements of big business will fight Obama...
analagouswithevil 2 years ago

You should look at the facts first and then establish a theory. Not establish a theory first because it bears the risk of unsonciously (or not) twisting the facts to make them fit into your theory.
So please take a carefull look. and do some research before posting crap like this.
Ben900000 1 year ago
Two supposed opposites which I now realise are pretty much the same.
zephiloyd 1 year ago
Nietzsche was extremely anti-socialist and anti-communist. The world makes perfect sense ? It sure does if you ignore the facts or get your information from websites that have an agenda. That Nietzsches theories have founded facism is just a lie. I bet you havn't read anything from him.
Ben900000 1 year ago

All I know is that Obama made Chicago a better place to live.
hiiamrick 2 years ago
While refusing money directly from federal lobbyists, who get their income from clients, Obama takes money from those clients. In the first quarter of 2007, he accepted a combined $170,000 from Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, two financial services giants that have numerous issues pending in Washington and spent a total of $4.6 million on lobbying in 2006.
analagouswithevil 2 years ago

Arndys 2 years ago
This was probably our first truly brilliant farewell address since George Washington stepped down and gave his, also brilliant, address.

" plundering for our own ease and convenience the precious resources of tomorrow " wow how could you sum up our national mindset better. i also like the part when he warn of " becoming a community of dreadful fear and hate "
undermislengteng 2 years ago 3
Wow, what a speech, I've never seen anything but clips. It was interesting to hear the whole of his warning about "the military-industrial complex." But something that was equally interesting is the warning about the 'government-educational' complex (to parot his prior warning phrase). I wish I knew more about the context to know whether it was anti-intellectualism (like Nixon & Reagan) or a warning of how ideas can be made servants to the interests of the govt, or the power behind the govt.

RandianoDosSantos 3 years ago
The lack of deference to Ike Eisenhower is undermining our role in the world let alone our liberties and democratic processes. You might say we live in a different world than in 1950s, but the threat then was a huge nuclear arsenal starring us right in the face. Bush also said as we address these challenges and others we cannot foresee tonight, America must maintain our moral clarity, in stark contrast to President Eisenhower who obviously foresaw a lot.
eecs2010 3 years ago
Bush said in his farewell address, the first decade of this century has been a period of consequence. He also highlighted the use of cyberspace by the government to fight the War on Terrorism. If consequence is the case, then 9/11 was the result of something, just as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were in the administrations view, a consequence of 9/11. In turn they have created possible insurmountable consequences.
eecs2010 3 years ago
The last great Republican president, but nowadays you only here the GOP lauding Reagan, Teddy Roosevelt and Lincoln. Its remarkable the difference between his farewell address and that of George W. Bush. Eisenhowers prophetic words on the Military Industrial Complex and information technology is haunting. Im sure he never had a concept of the Internet or the use of cyberspace by the government and military, but he knew that the computer would be a war fighting tool in the future.
