I think foreign oil dependency was an issue in Nixon's admin as well. Jon Stewart's Daily Show on June 16, 2010 has an entertaining and informative sketch ,might be called "8 Presidents"
I give President Ford a lot of credit for taking on Energy Policy when he did.
Passing a Comprehensive Energy Policy that promoted American Energy Resources, getting America off of Foreign Oil & moving us towards Energy Independence would of been a big boost to are economy & made the Economic Crisis of the Late 70's & Early 80's less painful.
give that man 40 more almanacs!! they've STILL done nothing--this needs to be re-broadcasted to the useless group of people that make up the US Congress (HOR/SEN)
I always have, and always will love and revere Pres. Ford, very deeply. He was a very kind and caring man. He was always very honest, and really felt our pain as a people. I only wish we had him in the White House today. Then at least I wouldn't need to fear the imminent loss of most of our political and civil liberties.
Gerald R Ford was way ahead of his time on the energy situation we are in today. The problem today is much worse and nearly impossible. I remember President Ford. I also remember gas below 70 cents!
History repeating itself yet again. F'n A-rabs have us by the balls with their towel head oil. The govt needs to wake up and quit scratching their balls and move towards wind/solar/natural gas. 33 yrs later and still nothing. Unf'nbelieavable
Right the United States have been talking about energy independence since Nixon and here were are 6 president's later and another one in three months (Obama) and they're still talking about it. This is sad.
Actually a hostile Democrat controlled Congress went against Ford, then Carter got elected and did nothing. There was little Reagan could do with another hostile Dem controlled Congress.
And likewise Clinton couldn't pass a BTU tax with a Republican congress.
Carter and H.W. Bush passed legislation but it didnt have enough effect.
Reagan wanted to dismantle the department of energy and gave us temporary solutions to a growing problem among other things so don't give the impression he really tried, look at whom he appointed in his cabinet
that in hindsight reagans policies werent very prudent and hurt us and congress has been fearful of passing real reform because it may hurt the economy
Carter stated the fact that to liberate ourselves from foreign oil we must first reduce our insatiable demand. Unfortunately Americans are a bunch of pussies and are not willing to sacrifice their conveniences to the good of our country. So, a whore was then elected and the consumption resumed.

Energy Independence is not an issue that came up 10 years ago but has been around for at least 40 years

You cant sell congress on energy, because congress in owned by the oil industry. unless we never relect someone back to congress.
