I loved this song when the film "Singles" was released. Starring Matt Dillon, who incidentally picked me up in a bar on the Lower East Side of NYC in about 1985. Or whatever year it was that Andy Warhol died, b/c I first found out about his death in that old tavern & that was around the time I went home with Matt Dillon. He definitely moved me. I was into the poet/musician Jim Carroll at the time & I had written a poem for him & Matt said they were friends yet he couldn't read the words of it...
Hey, what's up everybody... I'm here because all of you guys are Pearl Jam fans, and because, if you can deal with a little bit of 'spam', I'm here to promote my new band Overshadowed. We just got done recording our demo, it's on our channel, and we'd love if anyone could simply check the songs, leave a comment, or anything of the sort. We'd really appreciate it!
FYI, I came HERE because we love and respect Pearl Jam, and are hoping for whatever respect you guys might have leftover...
These people watching this had no clue the band they were watching and what PJ would become. They were coming out of the "big hair/arena rock" coma of the late 1980's and this bitch slapped them into the 90's and gave them a "black" eye I still have for the last 20 years.
Weird to think how the quality of this video surpasses what some people post as "HQ" that look like they were recorded with a calculator... 19 years ago. xD
Thanks for posting. About a yr after this video I saw RHCP with PJ and Smashing Pumpkins... as genuine OPENING ACTS.... Pumpkins were basically booed off with sound problems, and the crowd for PJ - who went on first - were like this crowd here. Amazing to think of now... its "Classic Rock"....
This show is interesting. "Ten" was released about 4 days later and "Nevermind" still hadn't come out yet so maybe thats why the crowd isn't so into it. I wanna say Pearl Jam didn't start "selling" records until 1992. Great stuff, thanks!
The crowd is mellow because the ten cd hadn't been released yet, so nobody had any reference or knew what to make of the band. It was very early on and people in seattle were still in mother love bone mode. Trust me, it was very memorable show!
@JErikR well the crowd must have been crazy cause Stone and Jeff were from Mother Love Bone, so they had to have known something good were to come out of this band
What's up with the crowd??? I'd be all over the place jumpin up and down if I were there. This song is AMAZiNG!! Love the lyrics. Check out PJ on MTV unplugged singing this song it's epic :D
@Kon3k There's no real excuse for this crowd. State of Love and Trust is such and awesome and catchy tune. My guess is the crowd was waiting to hear "Alive", "Evenflow", or "Jeremy" and didn't realize the awesomeness that had just witnessed.
@jakaboy Love Nirvana...But no. Really comparing apples to oranges, Nirvana=punk; Pearl Jam=Class Garage Rock. Pearl Jam is just brilliant, 20 years later the spike they get when they take the stage is still enormous (saw them last week). Nirvana had began to fizzle before Kurt's life tragically ended. Oh well, 2 of my favorite 5 bands ever, like arguing over favorite children..:)
I live in Seattle I was in middle school when this was going on, we set the music for country ,come to Seattle see some shows ,we were so used to grunge it had been going on for the last 5 years before this show it really wasn't a new thing for us it's that everybody started buying all the music we listened to and then we became "the coolest city in the world", quoting kirk loader of MTV news, so what I'm trying to say is that this is not new musical style for the crowd so they are used to it.
@purplethirty Jesus i thought it was just me that saw that lol, !!! i went through that period, i miss it lol!!! I love these guys! I saw 'em 8-24-09 gonna see em again 05- 07-10 noblesville,IN!!!! CAN"T WAIT !!!!

I still enjoy bringing it up every once in awhile & taunting him w/ the fact that he could have gone & witnessed history, but he was too stupid 2 listen. Well, thank GOD I was smart enough 2 get a ticket first thing they went on sale. They exploded about 3 weeks after I bought my ticket, & then they sold the remaining (probably 350) tickets in an instant. I remember being the only 1 around who knew who the hell they were, and then 2 months later the whole world knew. It was quite a trajectory.
just thought they were some nobody band and didn't even want to go. It was at a venue w/ 385 max. capacity. They purposely scheduled small venues so they could be virtually assured of saying that they officially sold out every venue on their first tour. My friend still kicks himself in the ass for not listening to me, and neglecting to go to the concert. I tried to tell him. I said I know music, and this is not just any band. I said this band will be truly great. Later, he became a huge fan.
I Love how the kid in the orange hooded sweatshirt and black hat looks like he is either constantly twitching, or trying to shake off a very persistant mosquito buzzing in his ear.

good call thats fucking hilarious. im blazed as shit right now and cant even take this rocking awesomeness. im listening to stone descendant too, they fucking rock as hard as pj did right here
Who cares if you like the music or not, theyre expressing themselves, and theyre expressing themseleves the same way they did in 1991....through music.
When they come to New Zealand the crowd goes crazy. Jumping, dancing, singing along and making a right mess of the situation. You guys all seem bored as f**k.
This is Seattle during the birth of grunge... they were probably too depressed to jump around... but baffled at the fact that bands were actually channeling their angst lol.
Meaning as an eleven year old I personally wasn't making any differentiations - I'm assuming the crowd here is older than eleven and therefore could tell this wasn't quite what they were used to or expecting to hear.
I was eleven in 1991 and I remember hearing the seattle bands on the radio and not really differentiating them from the 80's bands in my head - all I recognized was that they were great songs that I loved to sing along to. . .it's hilarious to watch this and see the people just stand there - they had no idea what to make of this and so they just stood there in bewilderment. Undoubtedly someone in the crowd is wishing they were seeing Def Leppard or GNR or something like that. . .
Sounds like "not differentiating seattle bands in 1991" is a contradiction to "they had no idea what to make of this & so they just stood their in bewilderment" don't you think ? In other words on one hand you are saying that the music from the 80s was the same as seattle bands on the radio in 91 (you couldn't differentiate them)and on the other hand u are saying the crowd didn't know what to make of it (didn't recognize this music or know what the heck it was) Or am I missing somethin here ?
this is a very good song but I think I like the unplugged version the best:)

Who cares if you like the music or not, theyre expressing themselves, and theyre expressing themseleves the same way they did in 1991....through music.

Whats up with Seattle!
When they come to New Zealand the crowd goes crazy. Jumping, dancing, singing along and making a right mess of the situation. You guys all seem bored as f**k.
It's not an opera!

Undoubtedly someone in the crowd is wishing they were seeing Def Leppard or GNR or something like that. . .
njsfilm 3 years ago
Sounds like "not differentiating seattle bands in 1991" is a contradiction to "they had no idea what to make of this & so they just stood their in bewilderment" don't you think ? In other words on one hand you are saying that the music from the 80s was the same as seattle bands on the radio in 91 (you couldn't differentiate them)and on the other hand u are saying the crowd didn't know what to make of it (didn't recognize this music or know what the heck it was) Or am I missing somethin here ?
