The WCS here is really neat, love it. The Lindy hilarious and fascinating - one of the most precise WCS dancers out there completely out of her comfort zone!
He jumps very well between the two dances, but her styling is definately West Coast (which is great, btw). She does not at all have the feel of a Lindy Hopper.

That was hilarious. I looked up this follow doing lindyhop on purpose cause after seeing her westie i was thinkin "man she'd have killer swivels" but boy was I wrong lol! I think she could be an awesome lindy dancer but she has a mental block about it. Awesome west coaster though.
I love this.. Its great to see the younger generation dancing like this. How long did it take you to learn? How long did you take lessons if you did? I am an country line dancer/2stepper of 12 yrs, so i have some background of the moves. I would love to learn. .

I love max's composition. There may be better technical leads out there, but he produces some of the most seemless and artistic sequences of moves ever seen, frequently in J&J competitions where it isn't even choreographed.
I am losing track of how many different types of swing dancing there are: east coast, west coast, lindy, hollywood...I'm about to bang my head against a wall...excellent dancing
Ceroc is not a division of Swing. They do sometimes play a swing tune or two at a Ceroc venue, but it's not at all based on the footwork or rhythms that the other variants of swing are. (East Coast, West Coast, Lindy, Shag, Charleston, Balboa etc.)
There are a lot of moves that are evocative of salsa, hair combs, pretzels, lots of spins, but unlike West Coast Swing, Ceroc is not slotted (though it can be... some teachers do specialty workshops in dancing Ceroc in a slotted format) and does not at all emphasize footwork or syncopation. It's great for folks who say, "I have two left feet" because it gets you focusing on dancing with your partner instead of stressing about footwork. Think of it as a gateway dance to other styles.
And actually... to avoid confusion... Ceroc is not the name of the dance- it's actually called modern Jive, which when done in various flavors can resemble Jitterbug or Swing. Ceroc a corporate entity that sponsors Modern Jive dance classes and weekenders, around the UK and in a few other countries.
Agree, a video to come back to over and over, and I have. Personally, I think of wcs as smooth, lindy as athletic, and both are great. To me, Lindy's all over the floor, and boy has his way with girl. Wcs, girl owns her dimension ("the slot" - up and back), and the boy has his - he guides, and moves outa' her way. Different count for sure: lindy's eight and wcs is six. Watch again, counting to yourself, and you'll pick it up.
Max is awesome!! It was so apparent that she was scared he was gonna run rings around her and he waited right to the end before he flipped her around! brilliant!!! hehe!
She is a much better West Coast dancer and he is a much better Lindy dancer. She is too upright for Lindy. Hollywood would fit her style better...but pretty good.
The main difference is that the west coast style is done in a slot--so the dancers are going forward and back on the same line. Hollywood is generally done on a circle and is very upright, like West Coast. Generally, Hollywood is faster. It's was the "white folk" response to what was being done at the Savoy ballroom--a mutation of Lindy Hopping in movies.
Oh thanks!!! A friend of mine took me to a dance a little while ago, I attempted Lindy but a guy I met said I would be better at Hollywood. I used to do Ballroom, so maybe it was because my frame is naturally more structured and dare I say stiff?! Coincidentally I have just looked up lessons to learn Hollywood style swing on his recommendation :)
That's great. Both Hollywood and Lindy are good to know, it's just a question of wheich you prefer. They are very stylistic and if you have a great chance at a good instructor-learn both, Why not?
hey guy and girlyou are absolut perfect swing and slowly rythm and perfect moove i like the futur dance in south france its verry class i m just practice when are you com in south france for the demo ?
@ AcousticBruce - not true. Lindy !> West Coast, and West Coast !> Lindy. Neither one is better, each is an individual, yet related, dance. Which is more complicated will be debated 'til they're gone and forgotten - but while the fundamental skills used in each are very close, the fine tuning is different between the two.
I like this, and watched it twice. Agree, she's a very nice WCS dancer, but doesn't know how to lindy. He's good at both. She squeals, but not to be cute; he's dancing circles.
Only the 2nd best??? (note the triple question marks) Er yourself. Granted, I lindy, and don't know WCS, but you could show better manners. Better spelling and punctuation too, come to think.
On the better manners point you could at least find out who she is before passing comment, the importance you placed on my grammar is not really relevant, you should be concentrating on getting all the facts before posting rather than worrying about how something is written, and besides you obviously understood the post otherwise you would not have commented on it.
I have a question, what is the difference between lindy and east coast swing? And, How does lindy and west coast look kinda similar in the step (besides the jumps and kicks)?
Lindy Hop is similar to what you see above, but its more athletic looking (typically) and is more complex. It tends to look "rounder" or more eliptical in its 8 count basic. It doesn't have to stay on a slot, like WC. The man and woman's basic steps are different. East Coast is more of a "mirror" dance - the partners usually stay in front of each other and do the same 6 count basic, but start on different feet.
I was always told that WCS is essentially Lindy Hop, but with more 6-count patterns, some different stylings, in a slot, and usually different music.
I was a lindy hopper who never tried WCS until a friend from work dragged me off to where her friends practiced. All were long-time WCS-ers. I was pulled onto the dance floor and was able to follow everything. It didn't feel much different. The differences seemed like a matter of styling. It was fun, though.
Very true. You can actually see up above: she looks very uncomfortable and almost akward in Lindy - she still tries to butt wiggle in weird places in her basic & her posture is a WCS posture. She prances a bit & doesn't connect to the floor, and doesn't know what to do with the music. He, however, looks comfortable with both, & in each looks grounded, with good posture appropriate to the dance. Its fairly easy to WC your Lindy - de-Westifing your Lindy is harder.
Good to know, Bruce. I've been having trouble with the local Lindy scene. They're stuck in the early 20's. Charleston and early jazz pervasive and they look at you funny if you want to hear boogie woogie or anything that isn't traditional early jazz. I'm getting tired of it after two years in this scene. I spent a few years in LA and SF, and they spoiled me, I guess. ;) My heart is with Lindy, but I feel the need to get out and dance. I'm seriously considering checking out the westie scene.
I agree. It's all about how many beats per minute someone can dance. Megaphone music...yuck! Who cares? There is almost no where to go in SF to Lindy on the weekends. I just got back from Boston where the Lindy scene is alive and kicking with tons of live music everywhere. I've started WCS here just so I can go dancing on a Saturday night! I say it's all swing, it's the MAC vs the PC.
I just noticed the opening said Jack and Jill which means this was not a preset routine. They are paired at random and pulled that off ad-lib. Heh. Gotta love when he can lead her so well that she has to squeel with delight.
Uh... it is pro dancing, Max and Jessica are both pro-swing dancers she West Coast Swing, he Lindy Hop. It is just a more accessible form of dancing, something real people can connect with.
COOL! You two are great. This video has inspired me to order an instructional dvd to learn how to do it. Hubby is even willing. That was GREAT! Do you compete at all? There's just one thing I don't get. At the beginning did you slip or was it fancy footwork? Either way, you made it look really good. The whole thing was AWESOME- way to go!
That first dance wasn't Lindy Hop it was West Coast Swing which, like East Coast Swing, is taken, in part, from Lindy Hop but has ultimately become it's own entity.

i think the lead, max, was amazing in this clip.
but his follow, jessica cox? her west coast was good, and fun to watch. but her lindy hop has room for improvement.
i don't mean to sound harsh, but normally girls don't scream when their lead dips them. she has a lot of style, but a ways to go with lindy hop.
