World class. I'm impressed, realy. Music fit very well I dont see any inconvenient in the fact that it seat on undisturb ground without footing/foundation wall, you guys are multi talent. Bravo !
@eggsstink i'm sure you're right. thats the way its usually done. one log cabin book i had showed it the way i did it and it worked out fine. initially, i was going to make it a garage with no floor at all, but then after i got the walls up, i decided to alter my plans and make it into a storage building/workshop, so i added the floor. and then the deck. and then the deck cover. i just wanted to build something out of logs.
@CanadianReich they're bolted to concrete footings. the vertical logs have a 2" wide groove cut out and the horizontal are notched to fit onto the groove, like a mortise/tenon joint.
How did you get the logs in place? They seem so heavy? For instance the logs that you have in place for the roof seems like you would need some sort of lifting device to accomplish that. Thanks.
@ImAChristianFirst lol, yes they were heavy. of course i was younger, stronger and dumber back then. i lifted them up by hand...the heavier ones i would lift one end and prop it on something, then the other end a little higher til i got them up in place.
@ImAChristianFirst once the logs cure as seen in the first half stacked up the water content is 40-60% less water is 8 pounds per gallon. if one does some math you will find out if a log is 400 lbs wet its 40-60% lighter if allowed to cure. See the documentary alone in the wilderness maybe its still in youtube...
Great work and a great cabin! To the people who think it costs an arm and leg to build one I can vouch it doesn't. I built a 1846 sq. ft. log home for just over $12,000.00 and that includes the finished interior. Of course, it was completed back in 1993 and a lot of that cost went into treated lumber for two porches and the metal roof I paid to have installed. Again, great job!!
@imasurvivornthriver Hi. We have an increasing amount of hail around here and my late Mama and her late husband were constantly having roof damage due to that on their home. I decided to go with the metal roofing because of its durability and I also liked the look of it. I imagine that it will outlast me which isn't a stretch as I'm past midlife. Thanks for asking. @waterfowlspecialist i appreciate the advice, but when i'm skidding by hand or a weak 3 wheeler, the logs slide thru the woods WAAAAAAAYYY easier with the bark off. plus they peel much easier as soon after cutting as possible.
Absolutely fantastic! You are a gifted carpenter but I think your best quality is patience. I can see the time and detail that you have put into this. Well done.
I couldnt imagine the labor involved in this build just from the log harvest alone. that one log at 3:33 must weighed 1200-1600 lbs. and with just a 3 wheeler, chainsaw, and simple frame trailer. not to mention the terain. AMAZING!
A simple 5:40 sec video doesnt give this builder full credit. of what he accomplished here.
@fleckyRFC it took 8 or 9 summers. absolutely remove the bark, otherwise bugs will live under it and chew the wood to pieces allowing water to rot the logs very quickly. bark peels off most easily in the spring before its under layer has begun to turn into wood during the summer.
@billman2112 thats for the structure only, not including the land. biggest expense was shingles. ALL the wood was free from my own trees. windows were salvaged from a tear down building. i mixed my own concrete by hand for the footings, bought nails, stain and misc hardware at garage sales. a bit of gas/oil for chainsaws. permits were like $100 as it is a 'storage building', not a habitable dwelling.

you certainly do have quite the talent. I had to take a long look at the stairs as they were unusual. I love the way you framed out the porch roof. It's a work of art to see.
I admire the way you started with nothing and made everything!
@prouter1 youtube took it down....copyright infringement. bummer. this company paid me 25 big ones to put their music on my video ($25 -lol). what the heck...i took it!
Great work, very inspiring! My late dad had built one of these in Norway. This video reminds me of those early memories - thermos coffee, sound of chainsaw in the damp and glistening morning woods.
Did you stack the wall as you went or build it on the ground and then draw the whole thing up? If you stacked, how did you lift the upper wall logs up? if you pre-assembled the wall, how did you lean it up? That small vehicle doesn't look like it could pull a whole wall of logs up.
@SatSound i stacked the logs as i went along. i put lifted the upper (and long) logs similar to the way in your cabinet video.....lifting one end at a time in several steps.
Nice work! Eastern white pine? Looks a bit knotty, perhaps Southern Yellow? I'm a timber-framer. This is not easy work. How's the maintenance on the cabin?
@Grovonator its 95% cedar. some of the roof rafters and the flooring is spruce. no maintenance. it just sits there, altho i suppose the exterior walls will need a new coat of stain/linseed oil/whateverifindatagaragesale someday. : )
Now that is what I call building a cabin. You built it from scratch, literally.
Awesome job brother, I am so proud.
Someday, I will build one just like you. I have a request for you, please plant as many trees as you cut, just so that the future has a chance to do something like this. I am sure you did. Respect.
wow that is beautiful, you are very talented at making cabins how did you learn how to do that? what kind of wood did you use? I love working with wood.
Lots of ingenuity and creative ideas here, both in the final building and the process of building it. Sure looks like a work of love...And for a workshop, wow! Nice!
COOL! I have several acres in Smokey Mtns USA and would love to build something like this!Did U get the idea out of a book or blueprints.Very Nice Job!
@onetoughtechie i like it alot. what type of wood is it built out of? i like the idea of buying land and using the trees on the lot to build your house.
I will be doing something like this someday. It wont be this year or maybe not for a few more years but it will happen eventually. Im not sure if will be a small log cabin or a small earthen home but as soon as I save enough to buy some land it will happen. I can take the time before then to educate myself on how it will be done. Your video is one of many that have inspired me to do this. Thanks.
@OregonAlleyCat Yeah i know but i dont have the time or patience really!!! Not a bad video though considering he built this cabin all perty much by himself it looks!!!

Hello! Thanks for the video. You have beautiful place there. Few advices for you.
1. You should bark those trees after moving them - so that you can take that dirty bark off. If you dried them beforehand then its another case.
2. When sawing trees use lower cutting point that you can take full benefit of the leght of log. And also stumps will be lower.
3. Trust me I am professional in forestry.
- by the way nice work with the fitting!

Don't you think it's sad that the music sucks so much so the so called "artists" have to pay people to get so called "famous?"

SatSound 1 year ago
@SatSound i stacked the logs as i went along. i put lifted the upper (and long) logs similar to the way in your cabinet video.....lifting one end at a time in several steps.

Nice work! Eastern white pine? Looks a bit knotty, perhaps Southern Yellow? I'm a timber-framer. This is not easy work. How's the maintenance on the cabin?
Grovonator 1 year ago
@Grovonator its 95% cedar. some of the roof rafters and the flooring is spruce. no maintenance. it just sits there, altho i suppose the exterior walls will need a new coat of stain/linseed oil/whateverifindatagaragesale someday. : )

Now that is what I call building a cabin. You built it from scratch, literally.
Awesome job brother, I am so proud.
Someday, I will build one just like you. I have a request for you, please plant as many trees as you cut, just so that the future has a chance to do something like this. I am sure you did. Respect.

Thanks.
