dit is al jaren een van mijn favorieten.ik vind yes ook mooi.maar dit is het ultime,

I wish they had turned back to their early sound. their later music loses much of the "prog" sound if you will, and starts to sound more upbeat and 80ish. no more grinding Roundabout or ethereal South Side of the Sky. Don't get me wrong- this is still good music.
any other YES fans who also love trance music? I get a similar stirring of the blood from great trance music....like 'Neverland' by Andy Blueman. Anybody else?
@howedelamitri - I'm a great fan of trance and I've noticed that some artists, especially the ones from uplifting trance like Andy Blueman, have a prog rock feel on their melodies.
Yeah, he screeches a bit. But I still prefer his human voice hitting notes a bit abrasively to some digitized, studio-altered voice that sounds perfect and perfect souless.
@06hatter totally agree with your comment (from say Jan '10) that the first 3 minutes of Order of the Universe is the most transcendent in the history of recorded sound.
Even though I am a prog fanatic (hence, my monicker), I have to admit that this is one of the best power rock songs of the 1980s. The fact that it comes from members of one of the greatest prog bands ever is another bonus...
grat vid.....such a good song,,just another treasure from these YES guys..good quality rock was back in the 80's...where a cd was worth buying,,no water in this music
For the record, I still wince during certain parts of this song, but I think that 75% of it is pure gold. Howe's fiery guitars are my favorite aspect of this song, and the intro is epic.
I have mixed feelings about ABWH, but overall I like it. 3 stars out of 5. The only negative aspects are some of Wakeman's cheesy synths, Bruford's cheesy Simmons pads, and some corny lyrics. And a couple clunker songs.
But it is redeemed by this one, "Brother of Mine", "Fist of Fire" and "Birthright".
Marvellous video, Totally 5*. And a terrific song that I haven't heard for years. Best one on the album. The first three minutes is a fantastic instrumental piece on its own.
"Without this gift of rock and roll we'd all be wasting time" - What a great line; I almost used it as my High School senior quote but went with a Lennon one instead.
yes i know...but i say YES because when I listen ABWH I listen Yes in their songs..for me Yes is not only Alan White and Squire...but I agree with you ABWH is not YEs
90125 a joke? It saved the band, is my favorite Yes album, and is their best-seller.
I don't want to start some anti-Rabin talk on here, but as the years went by, I started to appreciate every Yes album on its own merits -- not by what I thought was or was not Yes. I'm too open-minded for that.
To me, Yes is a multi-faceted diamond with smooth and rough edges depending on which way you "hold" it. It's psychedelic, it's poppy, it's organic, it's polished, it's ethnic, it's electronic...etc
I think it's great that you think/feel that way (take your pick) I was a teenager in the 80's so 90125 is what I first heard from Yes. Then I heard Fragile. "Same band?!" "Yeah, but different musicians" pause, awakened, shrug. "Cool! More please." (This conversation didn't actually take place but that's how it would have gone if it had.)
I hear you. The musical difference between many Yes albums (even just a few years apart) can be huge. This can make it difficult for people that prefer one sound over another.
But as I get older, my tastes have become more open, and now I love it all, including Tormato, Yes, BG, ABWH, Talk, OYE...it's all great music...
Yes, this is true. I was also refering to how time in general seems to go faster the older we get. One year when you're 2 (like I was in '71) seems much longer than the same span of time when you get older. I think this is because a year at age 2 is a greater percentage of the amount of time you've lived than it is when you're 20..30..40...etc.
Interesting that you later disliked what you heard first. I heard 90125 as a teenager in the late 90's, and because I was already a huge fan of Rush's 80's albums, it was a godsend for me to find an album that was so unashamedly poppy while still being prog.
I guess I've always had a sweet tooth for arena rock, as long as there's a certain musical and lyrical credibility. (I went through a phase of liking Journey, Styx and Boston, but now that more saccharine stuff turns me off.)
You misunderstand me. Sorry about that. I wasn't clear. I still like 90125 (Big Generator, Union and Talk too!) My point was that I like it all too. That just the brief on how it happened. BTW, I'm also Rush fan. I like all of their work as well.
I'm with you my friend, curiously ABWH is the best YES album for me too. I don't why I don't enjoy the other YES albums like this... I'm still wondering why
That video was amazing. And that group was cool as well. Although, I can't help but notice that no one seemed to be able to break free of the 80s completely with their sound. But I liked it, nonetheless.
But I love that video...then again, I am an astrophysics student. Gravitational lensing is awesome!
I agree. Shoulda' been ABWHL. I went back and listened to this whole album, and the bass parts are so great. The whole group melds very well in these recordings. Union is the other album with Levin. I like that one too.
I had always envisioned the beginning of the universe starting with the big bang, expanding in slow motion with bright clouds of gas condensing into stars that whizz by and then forming clusters, galaxies and black holes set to the long intro of this song. I think you have similar visions as me. Great vid, loved it.
Cool video... it's what I picture some 20 years ago.(space travel) I have the DVD of this group in a live concert. It's a good video. Thanx for the posting.
I regret that Anderson has not so many opportunities to collaborate with visual works, which of course includes movies while another good visible music maker, Pat Metheny has collaborated with some good movies.
This CD by itself practically rescued the entire music scene for 1989. Top-40 radio abruptly died during 1987-88 and I had gone from liking nearly everything they played to turning it off completely. This album and Rush's "Show of Hands" live CD were two of the only new recordings I bought the entire year of 1989.
Listening to this song in conjunction with these images proves to me just how much positive energy this music has. It's amazing!
how could human beings write the first 3 minutes of this? it shouldn't be possible
