its funny to see how much energy people use to break down other peoples preference of camera....i bought my a550 becaus i wanted a not uber expensive slr camera good enough for sports and if i want to take pictures of anything els i just use my zeiss lens :D .i.. (@canikonfanboys)

Good for:

Sports shooters on a budget, gadget lovers, upgraders wanting the SLR experience without a steep learning curve.

Not so good for:

Anyone else

The A550 is a big cybershot, Sony don´t know what a DSLR is. DSLR is not a handycam,

DSLR are technique and art, not point and shot.

don't have too, everyone knows dpreview don't like sony, so they are not objective. Besides I've used A380 myself, tiltable live-view opens up a whole new world opportunities like discrete shooting, and all kinds of angles comfortable. There is a reason why every other magazine praises Sony's live view, and other camerabrands introducing tilt lcd too.

Well, sony is a good electronic camera, but, if you need only and always a fantastic LCD, buy a Cybershoot.

If you need a DSLR buy a Nikon, Canon, Sigma, Pentax etc.

@parabellumantonio i prefer the cameralab review....Sony’s also done its homework and unlike some cameras which simply jump on the bandwagon of fashionable features, the Alpha A550 and its more affordable sibling, the A500, actually target a genuine desire of many photographers. In a word: speed.....

If you need always that "wonderful" LCD buy a Cybershot, if you need Optical viefinder buy a Canon, Nikon, Sigma etc.

The place for Sony is in mirrorless cameras.

@parabellumantonio actually a DSLR is a camera mainly used by hobbyists and professionals.

photography is about technique and art. oh and the point you make about a DSLR is not a handycam. i'll think you'll find that sony are (strangely?) the only one out of the big three that havent introduced video on there DSLR's.

I just don't see why a electronics manufacturer gets it's nose into buisiness that is based on precision and the dedicated love of making Lenses and not like sony a massproducer of almost everything that has a curcuit. Next they will be building satalites...

Do you guys even have real lenses that own in quality? You can have all the so good camera, without a lens it's useless...

well considering ziess are a legendary lens manufacturer compared to canon and nikon it makes a world of difference. think of it this way, a nikon lens is the old 1980's banger and the ziess is a brand new porsche 911, both are cars however the porsche is much better naturally compared to the old banger, oh and not to cause a war but im not trying to insult nikon im just quoting a nikon lens.

Lenses cost more the older they are, they don't get cheaper.

actually its an analogy the whole cars thing. oh and the Zeiss branding correction is debatable because both are accepted however it's normally referred to as Zeiss because Carl Zeiss was the original founder.

personally, I like the exterior look of the first generation alphas better.
