Long ago, when I when I was a child, I looked into the mirror but I didn't see myself, I just saw other, older, versions of myself that had already strewn my path with road signs and maps that I could only hope to follow, or to understand. I got lost on many occasions, and went around in circles, until I realised that the place I was looking for was where I already was.
