@omyyer No later than a few days ago, I noticed in a Metalica song that Hammet (who got lessons from Joe) plays 3 notes in a way which really sounded like the vowels of the title (too bad I can't remember it now)... If ppl singng overtones use vowel shifting to produce different tones, the opposite may be possible too (using overtones to make a sound sound more like a given vowel). I once read a comment on Youtube saying "his lead guitar is the vocal part; no need to sing".. great thought...
I have an orgasm every time he plays that one riff.. I've played guitar for decage now and Joe's performance has found a new level even from my playing too... so... it's fu** awesome... just trying to keep up with joe...
@Tatoon Can't help but massively disagree with you there dude. Personally I think he's actually got better with age, in live performances but also in his composing. This song may not be emotionally resonant as some of his others (nor is meant to be tbf), but generally he's still keeping that emotional core to his music whilst making tighter albums than some of older ones. Not that his old albums weren't tight. Or brilliant. Dammit the man's just awesome at making music!
Hi! I was a true fan from Joe, back in the 80's and 90's. But now, I think he's lost the feeling to create spectacular songs. This music is not froma guitar god, but from a average good guitar player. No surprises. Same happens to YJM.
*like* Some of the sounds on this track are reminiscent of tracks on the instrumental album "220" by Christian artist Phil Keaggy. Some good, toe-tapping tracks on "Black Swans..." and this is one. Very different from his earlier stuff ("Flying..."; "The Extremist"), but very listenable. Thanks for posting.
@sakourtele in the studio i always thought he used a bunch of amps...he'd pick and choose....flying in a blue dream-the title track was recorded using a mesa boogie rectifier i think
@BRADHblackdragon He usually picks a few of his fav amps and uses them, not a bunch though. Recently it's been marshalls, on the past few records other than this one it was with peaveys.
I hate to be the one to point this out... but isn't this just a re-hash of his previous work? And not to the same level in any way?? Don't get me wrong I'm a massive Satriani fan - the guy is the reason I picked up the guitar. But he's run out of ideas, each song seems to blend into the next, and this one in particular just leaves me dreaming of hearing the chorus to 'Train of Angels' or 'Friends' again for the first time.. Now THAT was Joe at his unequivocal best :)
at 0:33 I said "holy crap" aloud. I was in a library. I got yelled at by the person next to me. I said I was listening to Joe Satriani and they said "oh... understandable".
If you don't know who is Mozart or Beethoven you will never know what is the music!!
If you don't know who is Satriani........................same!!!!!!
Satriani is not a g.player only. Satriani doesn't use his fingers or his ears only like most of the gitar player. He has something more in his mind and his soul. Satriani and the music is same...one thing.Like Mozart or Beethoven. We have heard a lot of big gitar players. But Satriani is the only one.HE IS JOE SATRIANI!!
lookslikeyouhadenuff wow you must cum in your pants everytime you listen to Satch, so much for allowing people to have an opinion! guess what, still think this album is dull, pretty much like the last few :) have another hissy fit now lmao
@Mattallica12 Well its a good thing that you are about as ignorant as it gets when it comes to music. You are obviously not a satch fan and just some poser coming here to stir up trouble but its ok go listen to coldplay some more and let the real people listen to real music! Satch rocks and Id say most of this cd is great a few songs are ok but most are good and another thing is if you were a satch fan in the slightest youd know hes a live artist and his music is always better live. rock on Joe!
besides satch is the riff master and has more emotion than most people could dream of having in his songs, this one being proof of just that. or go to super colassal and listen to 10 words or just like lightnin or well any song on that cd pretty much and tell me those songs arent great. maybe im one of the only true satch fans here but that never changes anywhere i go. rock on joe keep making music man, despite the critics the rest of us still love you man.
@metallica dalen was saying that he doesnt make the same stuff. not he is churning out the same stuff. so in reality you dont agree with anything he said. plus how can you say that with the screen name of metallica? they have made tons of records that wasnt like their marquee old school rock til your fingers bleed stuff. please. maybe u guys lost your hearing with old age or just dont realize that people change it up sometimes. other than satchefunkilis i think every cd satch has is awesome.
Totally agree with Dalen77, Satch is just on autopilot now, dont get me wrong he's an amazing player but to me he''s just just churning out the same old stuff, my personal opinion is that the last album that blew me away was Engines Of Creation which i thought was a total depature from his normal style, it was fantastic! but that just my opinion, im sure im gunna get hammered from you guys on here for saying that but hey ho lol
Oh and another thing joe basically wrote dream song in his sleep hence the name. he dreamed it and woke up wrote what was in his head almost completely. Not many people can write a song period let alone one in their sleep. Satch is the man!
@dalen nothing is wrong with joes ears whats wrong with yours? super colossal was one of his best albums! this album is pretty damn good too. he used alot of keyboard on this album which he usually doesnt do but so what he is changing it up. lots of his albums are different. and lol @ his melodies use to be so great, not a true satch fan i see. sad. Rock on Joe despite some people we all still love you. Cant wait to see you at the chicago theater on dec 19th! will be my 5th time seeing him.
I like the chorus too, its a bit like Mindstorm, I dont know what happened to his melodies in his songs, in the 80s and 90s they used to be so great, I honestly dont really understand what happened to his ear or taste for music, you just cant beat the older songs. His songs lately have sort of modern guitar geek mixed with a sort of old style 70s Hendrix funk.

Do you remember....
1. When you could get on youtube without a huge ad at the top of your homepage?
2. When EVERY music video was from a user, not Vevo?
3. When you could use it as a music player without having an ad in the beginning of a music vid?
4. When copyright infringement wasn't a big deal?
5. When it was YOUtube?
Copy and paste onto videos telling youtube how PISSED we, the YOU in YOUtube, are with their greedy corporate butts.
By the way, please thumbs this up!

Most songs sound the same (very similar riffs). Where is the talent now? Kind of boring songs. Lack of brilliance on music.

I hear you, dude. He's still very good...but he's not what he used to be as a composer.
I can enjoy his last 2 or 3 albums. But they don't blow away my mind like the older ones :(
I hope that's because he got sloppy, and not because he's getting old. If he got sloppy he can still get back on track...
But I guess everything has an end :(

@Mattallica12 As a fan of his early work, such as on most tracks in Surfing with the Alien, for example, I gotta say I agree partially with you
I was quite depressed in the previous albuns, I extracted like 3 good songs from the one before this, and now like 4~ good songs
Definitely Wind in the Trees is my favourite here, THIS song and light years away are average, and I think the rest are quite like 'fillers'~
I gotta say that you have to be REALLY selective, but you can still find good songs
