  • What a cool video. Makes me feel good to see that this guy can broaden his horizons by using a computer with hardware & software that caters to people with disabilities.

  • well done Joe

  • so sad...

  • if u used a pc, i would care, sorry

  • Bless you Joe

  • I really dislike Apple for many many reasons. the restriction over customization, the extreme control over hardware (being forced to use iTunes to put songs on your iPod, etc...) and the environmental destruction that goes into creating apple hardware and waste that is created from discarded hardware that cannot be updated. However, Apple has recognized that not everyone has the same abilities to use a computer but has the absolute right to do so and they've created some wonderful innovations.

  • @Rennonz " the restriction over customization, the extreme control over hardware (being forced to use iTunes to put songs on your iPod, etc...) "

You complain about Apple but you argue on behalf of the Zeitgeist Movement who would exercise extreme control over every aspect of your life. If they manage the resources they are going to TELL you which computer system to use, their whole system is based on enFORCED standards that you won't be able to modify.

    Rennonz, You're an idiot.

  • @justintempler

I do not think using ad hominem attacks gets us very far in any kind of dialogue. But to reply to your statement, the Zeitgeist movement does not advocate such things. Though I am not a speaker on behalf of the Zeitgeist movement, I must say that under a resource based economy people have the ability to build and design their own devices and technologies and to share whatever creations and innovations with everybody else. There will be no such institutions as you describe.

  • @Rennonz An argument accompanied by what you consider an insult is not an ad hom. ad homs consist of an insult instead of an argument.

Without the allocation of resources you will not be able to design and build the devices of your choice. those decisions will be made for you by TZM based on some preconceived idea of of the efficiency towards the goals of the movement.

In a monetary system money serves that purpose, in a Zeitgeist world central planning will serve that pupose.

  • @justintempler You are correct when you say that resources will be allocated in a resource based economy, just as resources are allocated in your local supermarket's inventory. If they are not allocated, things just fall apart and the business fails. This is exactly what is happening to our ecosystem. The ecosystem in which we inhabit is becoming more and more uninhabitable as the monetary system judges the worth of natural resources through the eyes of a profit motive. (cont...)

  • @justintempler (cont.) so many cultures before western industrialization knew this well and acted accordingly, managing their natural environments so their children could also live in a healthy land. Now we don't live by these principles, we live under materialist, quasi-nihilist "individualist" principles where "we only live once" so we should consume as much as can before we are dead. It's suicidal. (cont...)

  • @justintempler Nevertheless, before you actually that there would be "enforced standards". This is extremely misleading because there wouldn't only be an enforced standard by any kind of authority at all. The enforced standard will come from the regular people who judge what kind of goods they see as worthy of using. And because many people will be designing and creating new and innovative things all the time, people will have an amazing catalog of goods to decide their own standards from.

  • @justintempler (sorry I missed a verb there - I meant to say "you actually say that")

Though to add, if you look at the open source movement, you can see the spirit of what I'm talking about. People decide what distribution they want to use because it does what they want it to do. People might want Ubuntu because it's very user-friendly and accessible for those who don't know much about computers, or maybe Gentoo for those who love to customize their OS. People make their own standards.

  • @Rennonz All your open sourcing does is give everybody the ability to produce by eliminating the knowledge problem. You haven't increased scarce physical resources but you have made it easier for more people to consume them. You aren't solving scarcity, you're creating it.

Now everybody and their brother can consume to their hearts content.... Weeeeeee

  • I have common muscular dystrophy ....nothing to complain about ....but I'm confused shouldn't this have been called "Everything I can't do in the real world I can do with my computer." ....I didn't see anything here that my e-system can't do.

  • So retarded boy, you can fuck that Mac? Yea, good luck with that, dawg.

  • lol at first i thought this was a joke. lol this is scary, gonna give me nightmares for a long long time. lol

  • @nepalihercules

This is not funny at all...His life is much better just because he ownes a mac. He can't do much in the "real" world because there's a lot wrong with his spine.

Some people weren't lucky to be born healthy like you and me.

  • @dunkje1 but he could do all those things with windows too, just needs to buy some software, and play some RPGs which are all voice controlled.

  • @nepalihercules

That doesn't matter you said this was funny and it is not...not at all!

  • @dunkje1 well the thing is i wasn't trying to be funny at all. that guy just gives me the chills.

  • @dunkje1 That's an opinion. You just have no sense of humor. I mean really, look at his face at the end.

  • @dunkje1 Were doing the same thing as him. Just that im not on a crap OS

  • weather my friends like it or not :) hehehe this dude is awsum i love him

  • it would be a good idea to have voice controll but to start it you get someone to start the recording thing and it records all the needed words that you would use and then it recognizes your voice and is an easy control

  • this guy is awesome :D

i would love to meet him

  • cool!

  • good job dude you are a truly outstanding man keep up the great videos

  • that made my day.

  • @bruslyman That's where his "mom" came from. At least shes in the kitchen like she should be. I personally hate how him and everyone else are acting like what he has to use a computer is an Apple thing. Its from Logitech and you can get the same and BETTER programs on a PC

  • Bless your heart!

  • I'm thinking it would be easier to get a microphone(built into Macs) and just use voice control. It was pretty much made for people who can't use keyboard and/or mouse.

  • It is not that simple. First of all many people with physical impairments also have difficulty speaking clearly. Dictation and voice commands will not work well in such a case. Secondly, there are many things that are hard with voice control, such as placing a cursor in an exact spot. Imagine trying to draw with voice control...

  • True, but there is(at least on Windows) a voice recognition program to get the Voice Control to adapt better to how you speak. As another option, there are touchscreen PCs. I'm not too sure it would be that effective in this case, though.

  • On the Mac there is a program called Dictate that is actually based on the same technology as Dragon Naturally Speaking where you train the software around your voice. I have tried Dictate and unfortunately my inability to articulate clearly prevents me from even getting past the training period. I am certainly open to speech dictation, but right now the technology isn't quite there yet for individuals with articulation issues.

  • Regarding a touchscreen, such input would be basically impossible for me to do as I have minimal movement in my arms.

Still, thank you very much for the suggestions. I always appreciate hearing about alternative access methods and learning about helpful, new technologies. :-)

The real innovation will come in the form of brain-computer interfaces, where an individual controls a cursor through thought alone. :-)

  • The day that you can control a computer with your brain is probably near, seeing that they got a monkey to control a robotic arm through BCI, and Emotiv and NeuroSky have released consumer BCI headsets. NeuroSky will be showcasing their BCI tech announcements at GDC 2010, which is March 9-13. Something that could also work is eye tracking. It's probably much less expensive than control by thought, but still a bit less effective. The problem with the eye tracking is you'd still have to click.

  • Nevermind. It seems that eye tracking is extremely expensive for the high sensitivity ones.

  • I think eye tracking allows one to click by blinking or staring at an object on the screen for a set amount of time. Plus, I don't know if even the high end models offer as much control as a mouse.

The future is definitely BCi. I would just assume wait till then, rather than spend 20k on something that would give me less control than I have now.

  • @TwistedAcid I am a man with cerebral palsy. My speech is unintelligible, but I can type some what with my fingers. Interestingly some of us need the opposite program - to speak what we type. And Joe has a program to have his computer type what he speaks, you go figure.

"One day there will be a cure for all disabilities."

    said me =)

  • I'm sorry to say this, but I actually rofl at this comment. Note: This reply isn't supposed to harm any people

  • ahh you are the typical british douche bashing on people because of the way they look or the things they use . i really cant explain how god can create people so closed minded and stupid like you. making fun of disable people its not right and also at least he knows how to use his computer from something useful, unlike you who things u can be funny by saying that kind of shit to someone like Him, shame on you no wonder why a lot of people don't like british closed minded fucks like you

  • no its just you being so dirty minded and pessimistic that you instantly take what i said the wrong way. i was merely trying to say that mac users have more accessibility options on a mac to enable them to use there computers. all of you are like that.

  • Dude, stop being racist, I'm British and i dont consider myself to be closed minded. If your angry at that guy, be angry at that guy, but dont make it a nationality issue cause that takes you to his level...

  • Comment removed

  • This video is quite touching! Good to see he is now able to connect with people and use his computer for his hobbies and interests, such as cooking.
