What has happened to the theme music? How could they replace the catchy upbeat theme music of the original with this cliche sci fi music? Toodle Pip Fun fun fun in the sun sun sun, Farewell Fresh Mango Juice, Bye Bye Goldfish shoals?
Also why is footage of the curry monster used for the summary of 'Bodysnatcher' and footage from 'White Hole' used for a laser show? Why not say instead "We encountered a 6 foot man made out of curry and played pool with planets" instead of making up new stories.
The one thing americans can not do is british comedy in fact watching that was about as funny as rimmers joke book! I mean why why do they have to ruin top british shows!
Okay, I don't know the actor Craig Bierko who played Lister? But even according to him in an interview he thought this US version was horrible. He also says you should watch the UK series. What a guy! :)
As a musical star I love Hinton Battle, but NOT as Cat. Utter tripe! And I see they even used footage from our UK series? I hope our creators and producers gave them permission? I know that if the US version of 'Sherlock' is in any way similar to the UK, then Moffat and co will sue the pants off them! Shame that crap version of the brilliant 'Life On Mars' did air! LOVE the fact the creators then made 'Ashes To Ashes' to show how they originally intended the story to conclude! :)
What is the point of making US version of any british tv show? I mean is the language barrier so vast it needs re-enactment? And then they get some british actors to do the US show...
@NiteOwl1983 She's in the second attempt; a promo that combined footage from this with the UK series, and which re-cast Rimmer and the Cat, with the latter being made female.
This is only funny if you've seen the British version. Seriously, if you've seen the British version you could look at this as a bunch of cheesy references to various scenes from lots of different episodes throughout the entire series.
@TheARMAProductions I don't think they need to stick to a formula, they just need to know what they're doing, stick to some decent solid principles and not become wacky. From the first episode, Lister was wanting to get back to earth, and was yearning for his ideal woman Kochanski. Series 7 just gave Lister those two things, seemingly without realising what it had done. You can't argue that you're marooned in deep space with people you don't like when you have a time machine and can go anywhere.
@TheARMAProductions Nah, series 8 was a stupid pantomime - all the cast scampering about like clowns and pulling stupid faces. The stories were rubbish, there was barely a scrap of science fiction and the jokes were things like sitting everyone on a toilet to laugh at them, and a dinosaur running around shitting everywhere. Absolutely the worst Red Dwarf ever became, and I'd like to say it's definitely behind us but the people who made it don't seem to agree so series X could be just as awful.
I would argue with you about us yanks, but you are correct. I won't apologize for my stupid American accent because it is the only stupid accent I have. I love the original RED DWARF. This American version is quite embarrassing.
Like watching a train wreck or a car accident, I just had to watch part three. This Smeg blows. Why would someone think this is a good idea? We Americans are smart enough to not only understand British humour, but think its funny without being remade! Idiot producers in this country.
this pilot seems to be wrought with spoilers(the fate of listers cat frankenstein, the evolution of the cat race, the encounter with kryten, and the alternate reality kristine kockansky.)
I do not know why people hate series 8 so much. It has some very funny moments. The Pete episodes, in particular, bad some of the funniest moments in the shows history.
@TheTheoldgit Llewellyn would have appreciated the money for the work, but if anything he was feeling guilty about doing the US version behind the backs of the other cast members.
I love the original series... and I can see why people don't like this. Me, I quite enjoyed it, it's only a rough pilot remember. I liked best the lines which weren't copied from the British version. Some things about it have potential, like Jane Leeves as Holly and Hinton Battle's Cat. Craig Bierko is pretty good too. I just watched it as an idea in its own right, and found it quite funny when I did that (cue irate thunderbolts lol)
@gaozhi2007 And yet the writers, director and cast are really proud of series 8 and consider it some of their best work. So I don't have much hope that new Red Dwarf will ever become very good again.
why would annyone do this to red dwarf? And BTW did whoever created this junk of a coppy (station i mean) never seen the originall none of the charakters is funny or even allike to what it is suposed to be?
OK, were the producers of this fucking abortion of a pilot pulling a prank, or something? The Bierko's portrayal of Lister is flatter than Keira Knightley after a one night stand with Ralphie May and Eigeman never even had a chance as Rimmer because the very character of Rimmer represents a level of pomposity that Americans simply aren't capable of displaying believably. Without Llewellyn carrying this farce, it would have been unwatchable.
This is pretty awful. A funny moment here and there, but no where near as good as the original. But it's not like this is the pinnacle of American comedy. We've got good shows and bad shows, just like the U.K. I love the BBC. Doctor Who, Sherlock, and Being Human, for example, and hope that none of them will ever be remade (too late on a few I suppose), but love our shows just as much. If you need an example of American comedy at it's finest, try Arrested Development.
@fifidebord cat did appear in the first episode of the original however kryten didn't make an appearance until the last episode of season 1 and became a regular from season 2 hope this helps :-)
i didn't think this was that bad, maybe because i've read for nearly 2 decades how shite the US version was so i expected absolute bab but never bothered to watching it until now... with better casting (namely rimmer and the cat) and less recycled jokes from the British version i think it would have been a decent show... i also agree with the points FifDebord made below me
Rimmer was originally resurrected because as Dave's supervisor he had spoken to him more than anyone else on board. Cat originally showed up a few episodes into the series and there was an interesting mythology behind the disappearance of his species, as did Kryten who was rescued from working as a butler to a dead crew . I think that due to it being a pilot they were forced into condensing a few episodes into one, so a lot of the mystery and existential drama of the original was lost.
I've never seen this before and God willing I won't again. This show is so pacy compared to the BBC original. It's like most of season one in 22 minutes with the sledgehammer wit of the original replaced with the kind of humor US TV executives think people like. Which is jokes that re about as funny as a baby with cancer.
@NorybDrol82 Actually there [ kinda ] was, it was the 1996 TV Movie with Paul McGann and was a co-production between the BBC and Fox. It was an attempt to bring the Series back, but was a rating failure in the US, the film did quite well thou here in the UK, but atleast it kinda helped bring the show finally back some years later.
as it happens, there was an attempt to "Americanize" Doctor Who in 1996, starring an actor named Paul McGann as the Doctor and Eric Roberts (yep, Julia's brother) as the Master. it may of suffered the same fate as the "Dwarf USA" fiasco (namely, no series), but it's actually not too bad (except maybe in the sense that if it had taken off, there might not be the Eccleston/Tennant/Smith series.) i actually almost regret that we never saw what it was capable of. almost.
@shadowyfigure100 Trust me.. I read some of the script synopsis for the series that would have come out of the 1996 movie.. I am glad it didnt make it. I am sad however that Paul McGann didn't get a chance at a full season though. He is awesome as the Doctor in Big Finish Audio
Watching this makes me want to go home and watch the real Red Dwarf. This is one reason why most remakes fail, some things should be left they way they are.
The original Red Dwarf is my favorite show, this is blasphemous. however you must admit that we fixed up "the office". the Brit version is unbearable. back to point though thank god this never aired.
I think the concept of 'less is more' is completely lost in producing this pilot. Lister wakes up as the only human left in the universe and within 5 minutes, the scene has 4 other characters in it...absolutely no room to take in the gravity of the situation.
I think that, over time, Craig Beirko's Lister could have become likeable, but probably nowhere near as funny as Craig Charles. And The Cat would have been okay (though not nearly as charming as Danny John-Jules), but the casting for Rimmer really killed it for me. At least this version of Holly was pretty attractive and did a pretty good job. And of course, Robert Llewellyn was still great as Kryten.
@darksouljoseph I agree I think this show never had a chance as it was being compared to the original, also it was aired I believe around the same time as series 4 or 5 in England which was doing very well, and already had a pretty solid fanbase, and like trekkies, sorry trekkers, smegheads can be pretty pendantic about timelines and characters. Also you have to remember the U.S. Pilot was written by Grant and Naylor, basically the original 1st uk episode, but it feels "dumbed" down.
WHY WHY WHY do the yanks HAVE to create their own version of every good show!!! Or voice over cartoons with stupid American accents.... they'd be far better off with the ORIGINALS and it would improve there primitive and mundane humour as well as the overall culture!
@wordsofwisdom2009 Mostly because our producers around here are damned idiots who have no grasp on anything more than sell it and someone will buy it.
@wordsofwisdom2009 Dude, you need to really calm down, if you get this worked up over a television show, British or American then your problems are much larger and you need to investigate getting mental help.
@wordsofwisdom2009 Since the license for Red Dwarf (and every other british show) is held by UK companies and individuals, it'd be impossible for the yanks to try making their own versions without the permission of the original show's owners/makers. I mean, I get your point, it almost always turns out badly, but if the owners of the IP didn't want it to happen, it couldn't.
@Leperflesh Of course they bought the rights to make it (facepalm)!!! Why they felt the need to do it when the original is far superior is the question!!!
