I loved the the U.S version. I absolutely loved it. It was my favorite show at it's time. But the ending SUCKED. I was devastated to hear that it was cancelled. But when they ended it with this, I had no comment, until I thought about it. Then I was like Mavakor, and thought "What if he was in a coma still?" It'd make since, seeing as he still had the shoe on at the ending.
I loved both versions (although the original + Ashes to Ashes was the best). When I first saw this ending I thought "Typical American Producers ruining British shows" but now my personal take on it is that both the British and American versions are set in the same universe. The US Sam Tyler read about the UK Sam Tyler in 2035 (Alex Drake's file), the, because they have the same name, his subcncious tricked him into thinking he WAS the original Sam, reliving the story.
I actually liked the ending and before anyone bites my head off, I'm Australian and I also like the UK version. I'm happy that they didn't do a carbon copy of the ending because, if they did, what's the point? Why not just watch the Brithish one? This ending also really made me think, is the ending literal and the shoe is just symbolism or did he fall deeper into the coma? And, if literal it also works. It changes the message to one about father's and son's. I loved the "Dad" line.
so much potential...... so much disappointment. And seriously with the Obama references???? I honestly thought this was a joke. Great story Great characters. Great Acting. Terrible ending. Terrible graphics. You can even see in all the actors faces that this ending sucked.
Why didn't they just have Sam Tyler throw himself off of the Empire State Building or the Brooklyn Bridge&have a similar ending to the UK show? With Bowie singing Life On Mars. Then Sam could have woken up in 1972&continued life there.
we all know that you have not one shred of originality but do us a favor. Copy shows from Spain or something, or France. This ending SUCKED!!!! kindly leave UK shows alone.
... because American minds can't handle the UK version? ;D Doctor Who Movie was bad enough, why can't they learn... Nobody. Ever. Appreciates. American remakes!
what a dire ending , the only thing it shows is the producers shot the bolt too soon as the ashes to ashes series told the whole story as it was meant to be
ashes 2 ashes tells the whole story life on mars was good but it was only half the story
the only thing i hate about this is the gene hunt actor think someone younger would have been better america have a lot of better actors suited for playing him
Call me a heretic, but I preferred the US version over the UK version. The last episode of the original series was less credible to me than the conclusion of the last episode of its American remake.
Dad?? DAD??? WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL?????? NO! NO! NO! NO!
Seriously, 'it's the freakiest show', 'major Tom'....This show has no right to nick the lyrics from the song if they can't even get it to play at the end....utter bull, waste of 2 minutes. I feel so sorry for anyone who actually watched this show
Loved the series, the ending was flat for me. But I don't think the ending was "real", either. The white patent leather shoe taking the first step was a dead give away that even this wasn't real. *sigh* Since the ending was rushed, I guess we will never know how the US really would've played this out.
When did American superiority end? Not when the economy crashed, but when we started thinking we could do British shows even remotely right. This is...well, pretty awful. And they couldn't get the Bowie song for it? Whatever.
This is how british life on mars would have ended if the writer came down with a sudden case of massive brain hemorrhage.
What makes this ending even more annoying is how they hammered in bowie lyrics like 'ground control to-' and 'it's the freakiest show' GET IT? THEY'RE BOWIE LYRICS LOL, BECAUSE LIFE ON MARS IS A DAVID BOWIE SONG! DO YOU GET IT? DO YOU NEED SOME MORE HINTS? NO? OKAY THEN!
There's so many things about this ending that just piss me right the fuck off.
I'm thinking that this was a last-ditch effort to make a "good" ending to a show with low ratings. I'm actually surprised it lasted a full season. The only thing that gets me is why Ray calls Sam "Spaceman" in the 2035 scenes. It made sense in 1973; he was asking about his computer, Chris mentioned HAL9000 and Ray said "we havew a real space man here." Why would Ray call him Space man here? Aren't they all technically space people? o well.
This is a joke right...? No? WHAT THE FUCK??! The ending was the total ESSENCE of the show, whoever it was deciding that THIS was how it all should end is a complete and utter tosser! Well, maybe I should be nice cause he's probably severly retarded as well, but HONESTLY. I mean I....I....I don't even know. This is an outrage. It's STUPID that's what it is. One can only laugh.
Ouch. I really loved the original. Really? They're in space? REALLY?! They can't just let the title be metaphorical? They had to put him in space? I'm a bit miffed with America at the moment...and I am American. I love sci-fi, but why would a team of writers actively choose to end a series this way? Was it spoofing itself? I'm seriously confused. I don't know how to take this.

So exactly how did the Sam Tyler in the BBC version survive a jump off a high rise to go back into a coma and live in his dreams? At least the American version is possible, credible and more rooted in reality. When you folks can win a war without our help, or be a big player in world politics without our support or build a car with a decent electrical system, then critize the greatest nation to ever grace the face of the Earth. People still dream of coming here, can you say the same??
@TroyCarm I don't think Sam did survive the jump off the high rise. As I understood it he offed himself because he preferred living in in 1973. I don't think landing on Mars is that much more credible than suicide. And I'm afraid I can't get into a battle of the cultures with you as I'm a sci-fi loving American myself.
@TroyCarm After being brought out of a coma,in reality,he decided to commit suicide&to go back permanently,to save Gene Hunt&the group from being killed,by the armed raiders,as he became friends with Gene Hunt,as well as being in love with Annie&wanted to be with her. Also we never know for sure if it was made up or if this world existed, for dead or dying people. The American version should have stuck to the other-world reality, instead of this. That would have been better. This is comical.
I finally got round to finishing Ashes to Ashes (a few months late I know). With all the tripe that is on TV, Life on Mars (original) and Ashes to Ashes stand out as works of genius.
I only watched the ending of the US version but, to me, it is enough to suggest that they have dragged a fantastic show down to the watered down tripe of most of modern television.
In Britain we can cope with US shows coming over here without needing to change them. TV in the US needs to learn to do the same
This really is the most appalling pile of crap. ABC should be thoroughly ashamed of this drivel and given a severe 'kick up the jacksee', as the original Gene would put it. Thank heaven we have the original to remember how good TV can be, and not this pertrifying heap of festering excretia.

I absolutely adore the UK version... but this is horrible. It completely misses the whole concept of the show!! The BBC should never have handed the rights to Life On Mars to ABC because they killed it... And did it really need to be dumbed down THAT much!? *despairs*
Oh dear Jesus Christ in heaven. Am I right in thinking here that Gene turns out to be Sam's dad? What a load of crap. Doctor Who, Life on Mars... they always have to ruin it! This five mins is the only bit I've watched of the american version, and whereas the ending (the PROPER ending) of our one had me in tears, this one had me crying for very different reasons - it's a load of trash! :D xxx
you know its weird... i really liked this show at first but i stoped half way and i hadnt seen the ending so i thought... you know.... and WOT THE HELL is this.... so disappointing
This is truly atrocious. The UK Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes are infinitely better. America should have learnt by now to leave good films and tv shows from other countries ALONE. This is just one example. Quarantine, a terrible re-make of [REC], the American version of The Ring, bollocks compared to the Japanese originals. But this really takes the cake.
2 words. Piss poor. 2 more? ok. Unimaginativly cheesy. Check out the finales of the UK Life on Mars for some real drama and Ashes to Ashes for a more satisfying conclusion. "thiss will b one successful gene hunt". C'mon?
um, I'm American and I hated the ending just as much as you. BUT, how can you hate on America for a few stupid people in Hollywood?! I didn't create that ending so shut up and be respectful!
Why do American networks seem to think that American's are too stupid to understand the concept of the original show. This really is crap. Gene hunt U.K. is one of the greatest T.V. creations and his last line to Sam tyler in this version is 'I'm gonna miss you most of all scarecrow' - WTF! Anyone who has watched this should really check out the original, so much better.
'That was one successful gene hunt' - worst piece of dialouge ever.
stop the hating, i bet you are all english peaple from the UK, right?? (no offense intented here), c'mon americans can do whatever they want, maybe they didn't understand meaning of the show at all but maybe they have their own way to do things and they even put a romantic touch to this show, like i said maybe it's just their way so don't be offended...;)
@CBoneSImWolf I'm genuinly curious. where is the romantic touch. the ending of season 1 of Life on MArs, the series finale of Life on Mars and Ahses to Ahses was more romantic than this. <sigh> in my opinion
wow...that was so crap! the us never should have tried to copy such a great and original show! the ending to life on mars uk and ashes to ashes was so perfect and that was terrible!
Okay I was curious to see the end. I had watched the first episode when it aired here, and hated it. And the end of the US version? Pile of pants! No wonder this pile of crap ended after one series! Our UK one plus Ashes to Ashes concluded the story admirably. What surprised me was it was similar to LOST! Only the pub was LoM/A2A's place of salvation, not the church! LOL! Brilliant!

HAHHAHAH! I can't even stop laughing...this is so bad. :D Thank god the original didn't end like this. And I was so pleased that ashes to ashes didn't end like this...
@Hippyann the reason for this ending is that american viewers are dumb. they need things spelled out literally.if a usa tv show involves audience having to think it doesnt go well in ratings
@ChiaraMcD you mean ought to sue abc? this completely destroys the uk brilliance by churning out stuff a five year old could watch.utter crap.thought ashes to ashes ending was great friday
I don't think his 2035 reality is real at all. The odd strip of 70's wallpaper inside the ship at 1:23 makes me question whether any of it is real at all. Perhaps the ending, was simply all a dream...
Shame there's never gonna be a second series, so we'll never know...
Nah, there are two of us. As much as I liked the endings to both LoM UK and Ashes to Ashes, I think the US version's conclusion was a good fit for the spirit of the American show.
@nickthefox72 - I enjoyed the last episode... laughed... knew the producers were thanking us for hanging in with them - it was also a fake out because we had all watched the UK version on YouTube and were expecting the "jump and kiss"...instead we got the old folks home and the astropods... and that cool white shoe with Martian dirt.
I like this version of the ending. I don't think it has the emotional punch of the UK ending, but I don't think it ruins the show, and I really like the crazy thinking that led to it.
This is, quite simply, AWFUL. The BBC ending was both more believable and better made, proving that British programmes should stay with the British. Let's just pray to whatever God is listening that the American networks have no desire to turn Doctor Who into the same kind of crap
Why the hell did they even have to 'Americanize' something so universal anyway, why couldnt the US audience enjoy watching the UK version, If britain can watch american shows like 'friends' in their original format, then why cant ABC keep british formats the same too...
@ukdjkey Thank god for small mercys. That was the most horrible thing anyone could have done to the brilliant LOM concept. The only decent screenwriters left on the planet all seem to work for the BBC. At least the americans show no inclination towards desecrating Dr.Who in a similar fashion.
The 1973 period seemed a convenient choice. It post-dated Star Trek, the Vietnam War, and the Apollo missions. So these never got much mention. And pre-dated Star Wars and such, so it avoided treading on George Lucas or Spielberg. It fell in that scifi dry spell, in the US, occupied only by Planet of the Apes movies, the Six Million Dollar Man, and the Bionic Woman. Imagine 8 years without any Star Trek reruns. Only BBC's UFO and Space 1999 series, relieved the boredom.
assuming obama's oldest daughter is the one being referred to as president in this episode... it would be constitutionally impossible for her to be president in 2035... based soley on her age.
malia, the eldest daughter, was born in 1998. by the time of the 2032 election she would barely be 34 years old. this is one year short of the minimum age required to seek the presidency.
there is no end to the utter stupidity of this show.
Once you realize that Tv execs want their aerospace stock investments to "soar" in value, it make perfect logic they'd turn anything into a trip to Mars.
When I first heard about this series, I thought it was about a place in NYC called "Mars". Like how they have Tribeca. But then nobody referred to this neighborhood as Mars. And I was confused. What's the title got to do with it, beside the song? Even in the UK version? Who names Tv shows after rock songs?!
This ending IS approved by the creators of the original BBC series, I saw the ending of the original.. it was lovely compared to this mindfuck excuse of an ending
thanks for runig life of mars you nutters haha. well we had ashes to ashes. now we are guna have a 5th and final series how can u have a secod series you fuckig raped our show
NOW
we have shamless in us? imagin frank gallacher waking up i 34506 BC haha be good fuck you america
Что с вами? Замечательная концовка!!! Вовсе не дерьмо! Просто вдумайтесь, прошу вдумайтесь в нее! Это не законченая история, которая требует продолжения! А еще весь этот сон это была не мечта!
wot a weird ending. he was supposed to jump off a building and wake up in 1973. Actually landing on Mars? Major Tom aka Harvey Keitel? . "Gene Hunt". How strange
I mean British Sam was distraught! He woke up from a world where he had relationships, and dug up all these things about his father. So mentally scarred even that he did the ultimate act to go back.
And G.I Joe goes oh that was weird, whoo I'm going to Mars! D:
So every heart-wrenching conversation with the hostage taker, Irish gangster, Electrical Insects, Irish gangster's sister and others is just a fake piece of shit? Is that what it is, huh?
So nothing fucking occurred. Just a dream. Oh, I know. The show was cancelled and the director gathered everyone to shoot a quickie finale. That's what it fucking is.
I will pretend that Sam Tyler remained in the seventies. He stayed with Annie and the team. Fuck the writers.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Someone once said the difference between Americans and the British is that Americans think death is optional. Well, until what's her name from the sequel series brings UK-Sam back from BEING DEAD, this version is better, because HE'S ALIVE.
And if you think this was the worst remake of a British series, try "Coupling" -- which stunk in the original version as well.
And Glenister wouldn't last 20 seconds with Keitel -- who's 24 years older.
I hate stereotypes, and I like american movies, but this... creators just confirmed everything was saying about american "pop corn" movies. I can`t stop thinking: "Are you lost your mind? Why did you do it? UK version ending was clear an complete. WTF?!!!"
I saw all the series, i didn't saw this comming, its a hell of a finale, pretty cool!!!!! :D
Awesome
I think that Sam wakes from ''the coma'' i didnt saw this finale comming! Awesome!
A mi me gusto mas el penultimo capitulo, cuando Sam estuvo apunto de saltar. Yo pense que todo era provocado por los mini-robots, por eso prefieron el penultimo capitulo al ultimo.
I like the penultimate chapter, when Sam was about to jump. I thought that everything was caused by the mini-robots, we prefer the penultimate chapter to last.
Aun asi, creo que la version britanica es mejor. Ya que viene con toda secuela (ASHES TO ASHES)

I... I am ashamed. And yet not surprised. American show business (movie or tv) has kind of failed recently.
But how DARE they ruin such a potent and emotionally resonating ending with this cheap crowd-pleasing tactic?
Hell, how dare they attempt to remake such a fantastic show in the first place?
Give it a decade to be awesome before you try (and fail) to overshadow it!

:D xxx

I know what the REAL Gene Hunt would say to the person who wrote this crap:
"Oy! A word in yer shell-like pal ..."
[Boof! Bosh! Thump! Twat! Crunch! Smash!]
"Raymondo! Charge this Yankee low-life and throw him in the cells!"
Ray: "Charged?! What with?"
"Crimes against Television! Get him out of my sight!! .."

I think this was a great ending to a decent TV show. It's a lot better than any crap that's on NBC right now, that's for sure.

I'm ashamed to be living the US with this crap on TV.... the UK version was 50 thousand times better!!!!!!!
Ravent42 1 year ago 7
This is truly atrocious. The UK Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes are infinitely better. America should have learnt by now to leave good films and tv shows from other countries ALONE. This is just one example. Quarantine, a terrible re-make of [REC], the American version of The Ring, bollocks compared to the Japanese originals. But this really takes the cake.
soupyy227 1 year ago 2
2 words. Piss poor. 2 more? ok. Unimaginativly cheesy. Check out the finales of the UK Life on Mars for some real drama and Ashes to Ashes for a more satisfying conclusion. "thiss will b one successful gene hunt". C'mon?
227060 1 year ago
um, I'm American and I hated the ending just as much as you. BUT, how can you hate on America for a few stupid people in Hollywood?! I didn't create that ending so shut up and be respectful!
kelliec01 1 year ago
Why do American networks seem to think that American's are too stupid to understand the concept of the original show. This really is crap. Gene hunt U.K. is one of the greatest T.V. creations and his last line to Sam tyler in this version is 'I'm gonna miss you most of all scarecrow' - WTF! Anyone who has watched this should really check out the original, so much better.
'That was one successful gene hunt' - worst piece of dialouge ever.
axemanand 1 year ago
stop the hating, i bet you are all english peaple from the UK, right?? (no offense intented here), c'mon americans can do whatever they want, maybe they didn't understand meaning of the show at all but maybe they have their own way to do things and they even put a romantic touch to this show, like i said maybe it's just their way so don't be offended...;)
CBoneSImWolf 1 year ago
@CBoneSImWolf I'm genuinly curious. where is the romantic touch. the ending of season 1 of Life on MArs, the series finale of Life on Mars and Ahses to Ahses was more romantic than this. <sigh> in my opinion

LOL! Brilliant!

@ukdjkey Thank god for small mercys. That was the most horrible thing anyone could have done to the brilliant LOM concept. The only decent screenwriters left on the planet all seem to work for the BBC. At least the americans show no inclination towards desecrating Dr.Who in a similar fashion.
dudewhosaysarrh 1 year ago
The 1973 period seemed a convenient choice. It post-dated Star Trek, the Vietnam War, and the Apollo missions. So these never got much mention. And pre-dated Star Wars and such, so it avoided treading on George Lucas or Spielberg. It fell in that scifi dry spell, in the US, occupied only by Planet of the Apes movies, the Six Million Dollar Man, and the Bionic Woman. Imagine 8 years without any Star Trek reruns. Only BBC's UFO and Space 1999 series, relieved the boredom.
youtub3k 2 years ago
i just did the math... this show is so stupid.
assuming obama's oldest daughter is the one being referred to as president in this episode... it would be constitutionally impossible for her to be president in 2035... based soley on her age.
malia, the eldest daughter, was born in 1998. by the time of the 2032 election she would barely be 34 years old. this is one year short of the minimum age required to seek the presidency.
there is no end to the utter stupidity of this show.

'The show's called 'Life on Mars'. I know, let's make it all about a mission to Mars!'
What kind of strange logic is that?!
What's wrong with a little symbolism, a little ambiguity- hell, even a little DEPTH?
Gah.
eversoplucky 2 years ago 4
Once you realize that Tv execs want their aerospace stock investments to "soar" in value, it make perfect logic they'd turn anything into a trip to Mars.
When I first heard about this series, I thought it was about a place in NYC called "Mars". Like how they have Tribeca. But then nobody referred to this neighborhood as Mars. And I was confused. What's the title got to do with it, beside the song? Even in the UK version? Who names Tv shows after rock songs?!
