This was a big problem on a lot of the earlier models. Coleman has fixed the issue with the newer Roadtrip grills. If you have defective grates you can call Coleman's customer service and they will send you out new ones...free and quick.

Mines is used. A bit of missing coating, but I use PAM coating before heating it up. Works great. Defective, perhaps?
