  • recently saw them live, can't believe i've been without their music for the last 30 years. great performance.

  • A unified front of rock if there ever was one--and those kids who stood up and cheered..I love this video, maybe the best live footage of Devo ever.

  • @juliano66 Check out the footage of them doing Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA on youtube. It is friggin awesome! It's the one uploaded by 'gadgetman 2000, June/13/07, the 'better quality' clip. I think you will really appreciate it. Let me know what you think.

  • this is fkn grand, go hard Devo :)

  • remember seeing this when it originally aired i was 14 and recorded it on cassette tape

  • 21 people never wore a plastic hat

  • To every music ever made,Devo did it first.

  • like awesome dude!!!!! Devolution is alive and kickin!

  • Recently saw DEVO in concert (late 2011) and they were unbelievably awesome. "Gates Of Steel" rocked and almost brought the house down due to the crowd jumping to the beat in perfect unison. Most amazing live performance of any band I've ever seen. Made me so thankful to have been a teenager in the late 70s and early 80s. My parents kept me stocked with every DEVO cassette tape ever produced and listened with me.

  • A man is real!

    Not made of steel!

  • cool hat.

  • @stenu1

    That isn't a hat ---- it's an Energy Dome!!

  • Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame material.

  • i remember seeing this live on tv in 1980-i was 14

  • why did Van Hagar rip this off for "Why Can't This be Love?

  • the best. is kinda math

  • gerry is the best one

  • Too bad it keeps stopping. I LOVE DEVO!

  • @DawnFremy I think the start/stopping was a video effect used at the time it was broadcast. The best 1980 had to offer...

  • for the love of devolution when a band sounds BETTER live than they do recorded you know your on to a good thing! I would choose this version of Gates of Steel to drive into a sucide situation to save my friends from evil over any other soing RECORDED! ALL HAIL DEVO!!!!!

  • two excellent songs: great video

  • I'm glad my father used to listen to this when I was younger, otherwise I wouldn't of heard any of this

  • @stevecam1 Cool dad

  • @stevecam1 You wouldn't *have*. :)

  • The enthusiasm on Geralds face at 4:23 has to be one of the best things ive ever seen :L

  • Much better than the album version. This is their greatest moment.

  • futurista

  • what a cool blue guitar... love thie songs. so influential.

  • Mitici!!!

  • I love this group, have ever since they got started - definitely under appreciated!

  • my sharona

  • @luxordiasgard Knack = shyte

    Devo = gods

    please no.

  • To any haters out there..DEVO is beyond anything anyone has done anywhere.

((OK OK maybe Kraftwerk...)) Yes, DEVO are one of the most influential bands of the 1970's and beyond. If you don't get it, than you're not paying attention.!! PAZ

  • better than GOD.......DEVO!!!!!!!!

  • Nicholas Cage on keyboards!

  • @Rpaulie53

I am glad that you have a mutual admiration and respect for truly genuis musicians. Devo is the best . The show was light as far as the crowd attendance but just as you replied ALL on their feet and dancing and singing along to the older CLASSIC DEVO. I LOVE the Saratoga mountain winery. It is beautiful. Did you get a new blue energy dome that night?

  • I need an energy dome...

  • whip it good...an original band

  • i have loved DEVO since 1978. I still do and always will. Seen them live spread out over the years and i am going again tomorrow night at the Saratoga Mountain Winery. I have sixth row. I am still stoked like i was back in 78.

  • @amynoel100 8/27...i was there at the Winery...saw a great show, just as I did at Warfield in the 80s (the famous live album). Sorry the crowd was thin this sat. nite....all ages on their feet and responsive nonetheless.

  • if i had a top list of songs(ever),this would be on it!

  • Brought back so many memories. If only I had been old enough to go to a concert back then...

  • What an awesome song, and Devo rocked live.

  • truly great rock n roll right here. i could listen this all day

  • If you ever compare Devo> to Weezer for any stupid reason I will find you and kill you

  • @Burningchromosome Weezer is so talentless and unoriginal they were offered money to disband. There was an online petition and a guy was trying to raise the $10M Weezer demanded to disband. Just saw Devo last night... best show ever!

  • @Burningchromosome I would compare them to the WHO, They wrote so many Awesome songs Just like Pete did, Just a amazing band. If these guy came out for the first time in 2011 they would be band of the year.

  • man gates of steel was one bands favorite song to cover besides smart patrol/mr DNA

  • People talk chit on Devo! ha! at the And now it can be told" show in 89 I was standing next to Henry Rollins of all people. Rollins in a basicall confirmed he WAS a big DEVO fan from back in the days when he was living in Back east! I even have a photo of Lemmy (motorhead) standing in the front row with a big smile on his face, arm waving!

  • @mxsurfoc if someone doesn't like devo then i question their ability to realize great music when they hear it. i enjoy many genres of music with devo being one of my favorites!!!

  • greats

  • Isnt that Bob 2 with the blue guitar? I'll bet its the same blue guitar that appears several videos (and decades) later!

  • apes don't have tails

  • Alan the quintessential nerdy powerhouse, you are sorely missed.

  • Datarock just wish they could have been Devo... just like Maroon 5 wish they could have been Dag... even if they sold 100 times more than the original !

  • Two all time songs all the way. A veritable buffet of musical notes.

  • I saw them both times on ''Fridays.'' Saw The Jam and The Clash on there as well. 1980 I believe.(''Freedom of Choice'' was released in 1980; I have the record). May have seen The Plasmatics on the show as well. Wendy O Williams chainsawing a tv. ''Fridays'' often featured great bands and Michael Richards as a pharmacist who was taking the drugs instead of dispensing them. Some of the show was funny but it only lasted about three seasons.

  • i still got the 33 ep

  • Mark Mothersbaugh is the man behind the Rug Rats cartoon music and countless other movies, TV programs etc. Devo was way ahead of ahead of their time. I'm from the class of 81, where here in California we wore Levi 501's, canvas Vans with no socks and listened to Devo:) Good times

  • Weezer reminds me of these guys, although Weezer isn't as cool. :-)

  • @MB3Productions Weezer and Devo my two favorite bands, and they're both very cool =)

  • @abcmon123 Yeah, I like Weezer, but DEVO was so bold for their time. WAY ahead. Many artists have covered them: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Robert Palmer, etc. I'm sure DEVO had some influence on Weezer though. I'd like to hear Weezer cover a DEVO song, maybe "Beautiful World" or something.

  • they kind of rock I ain't gonna lie lol

  • Thank you for sharing this!! My two favorite Devo songs ever!!! Takes me back to summer 1981!!!

  • awesome! Fridays, what a throw back in time

  • 2:45 best moment in the history of music!!

  • @RollCarne lol never noticed that before, well spotted!

  • Comment removed

  • My two favorite tracks in one performance!

  • Could of seen these guys back in 81' at Massey Hall here in Toronto, Canada for $10. One of my biggest musical regrets

  • i wasnt even born when these guys were rocking out the world. devo kicks ass

  • such a sick jam/solo at 1:45....

  • so whip it GOOOOODDD xDD

  • jeez i can play this over & over & over & over &over...

  • my favorite songs of of freedom of choice! gates of steel is better. devo kicks butt!!

  • these guys were always in a league of their own...........loved them

  • "just a girl, GAY BAR!"

  • i love the way the video stops lagging as soon as mark starts singing

  • For some reason I'm hearing "Just a girl. a Girl. A gay one."

  • @firestormthehedgehog Probably your subconsciousness telling you that you're gay.

  • @GuitarTobi11 no i'm not gay. I ctully found thi son a website tat load of people thought they heard that

  • @bleaufire Yep Alan Meyers was known as "the human metronome" !! Top drummer, top group, top tuuuuuuunes!!! :)

  • thankk god for these guys

  • Why do I have the uncontrollable urge to watch "Revenge of the Nerds?" This just is so unbelievably kick ass.

  • (sigh) devo. LOVE IT!

  • I wanna wear one of those 8D

  • @ozimmero Google "DEVO Energy Dome" and you can buy your own.

  • I like Devo.

  • That blue Ibanez iceman is pure sex!

  • i raped the replay button

  • @ilikeylot567 lolz

  • LOVE those CRAZY LEGS!

  • Their "Gates of Steel" is simply an anthem!

  • They're playing tonight in Portland and I'm gonna see them! =)

  • @ehditpilares that show was so fucking great

  • @ilikeylot567 hell yeah!!!

  • @ilikeylot567 hell yeah!!! I have some videos on my channel.

  • 17 people have a girl they want, but know it'll never be more than want.

  • It's easy to forget how intense they were, irreverant and intense quite a combination

  • Duty Now for the Future

  • isn't the guitar an "iceman"?

i thought the explorer was a rip off gibson.

  • @stophverismo I'll check that, there was a picture of an "iceman" in the same catalog. I might very well have been confused. Ibanez used to send me catalogs back in the 1980's, that was a along time ago, and I was drunk a lot. If that was my mistake I'm sorry.

  • @stophverismo I checked, you are correct, my mistake. "The Destroyer model was first introduced by Hoshino-Gakki in 1975 and was based on the Gibson Musical Instruments' Explorer design."--Wikipedia "The original Ibanez Iceman production was from 1975 to 1982/1983 with different models having set neck and bolt-on necks."--Wikipedia The guitar in this video is almost certainly an iceman, my mistake and I apologize.

  • In my opinion this band was revolutionary. The multiple keyboards, hammering skins, and Ibanez Explorer in the Gates of Steel vid were like nothing of their time. About the only group I would try to compare them to is Kraftwerk. I have 3 Ibanez guitars and a catalog from that period with a pic of Ace Frehley playing a nearly identical Explorer except Ace's is black. I kinda wish my volume went to "11". TWIST AWAY THE GATES OF STEEL!!!

  • @clintonearlwalker I mostly agree with Devo and Kraftwerk but I'd put The Screamers (aka, The Tupperwares) up there, their just a lesser known band.

  • @Thirdpres Never heard of them, I may try to look them up though. That's kind of why I mentioned Devo as being revolutionary, simply because they were so well known. No other band I know of had this type of sound at that time that was as well known. Other bands I guess I would consider revolutionary for similar reasons from around this time but of a different genre would be the Sex Pistols, and the Dead Kennedys. Just my opinion.

  • @clintonearlwalker Agreed. The Screamers have some pretty good music, different. There are quite a few here on YouTube but they never recorded so you'd best just check here on YouTube for them. The Screamers are the progenitors of the little known genre called Synthpunk (Electropunk). Some other groups in this genra that may, or maynot, interest you: Nervous Gender, The Units, Tone Set, Our Daughters Wedding and Voice Farm. Good luck and enjoy.

  • @clintonearlwalker Before getting back to Devo, I'd suggest Tubeway Army. They are often seen as an important, even revolutionary band in their own right.

  • @Thirdpres I'm certainly no expert on this genre, I may try looking up some of you suggestions when I get a chance, I'm going to bed right now. Probably the first experience I had with "punk" music was the movie "Cheech and Chongs Up in Smoke", it's a great movie if you haven't seen it. There is a great clip in my opinion posted on YT called "PISS OFF" from the movie. Cheers and goodnight.

  • @clintonearlwalker Yeah. I started watching Cheeck and Chong movies back in the early eighties. Hrm. My first experience with punk was back in '76, listening to The Ramones, particularly Sheena is a Punk Rocker. Good times and good night.

  • @Thirdpres I just watched Screamers Vertigo and Eva Braun recorded at UCLA in 1979. I graduated high school in 1979. Back in those days punk was frowned upon by most people or completely unknown. I live in a small town in the woods. A couple of fairly recent vids of a "heavy" type genre that are great "Destroyer" by Static X and "Brackish" by Kittie if you don't know them. Also, I was messaged here on YT once by a member of "Kenelis" a Brit band, they are kind of decent.

  • @clintonearlwalker Thanks for the info on those bands. I was pretty lucky in that I lived in areas (chiefly counties around LA and later Washington DC) where I could listen to punk once it was available, but there is no doubt that punk along with other lesser known genres were difficult to find and listen to back then. The past few decades have really changed things for people from all corners of the Earth.

  • @Thirdpres DC huh? I used to do roofing in Newington VA, I currently live in Western MD. I started college in 1980 and met with people from most of the East Coast and picked up on Zappa, Dead Kennedys, Clash, Sex Pistols etc. The internet is incredible, the main reason I wanted a computer was so I could watch the old music videos. I can also talk to people all over the world like they are in the next room, I don't have a web cam but I send e-mails to guys in Belgium, Croatia, Taiwan, etc.

  • @clintonearlwalker DC for a brief while before moving to Prince William in VA, just south of DC unless there's traffic. '80 for me to. I was familiar with DKs, Clash, Sex P., Zappa plus a good deal more but Tower Records, WHFS, and 9:30 Club all expanded my venues for experiencing new music. Agreed on the Internet. I've been friends for years with folk from all over, even getting together for parties with friends from different states and countries after getting to know them on forums or MMOs.

  • @Thirdpres Sounds like you are right on top of things. I guess the first 2 rock albums I got were Aerosmith Dream On and Queen A Night at the Opera. I listened to them forever and still love nearly every album by both bands. I've played bass in a couple of local bands that were crap I played trumpet in high school. Torrents are great for me, I can grab nearly any music I want and burn it if I want. Anyway, thanx for your info, Cheers!!

  • @clintonearlwalker Thanks and enjoy the music.

  • only 3 keyboards?

  • @Jawastar99 they're not hats, they're energy domes!

  • 292,309 people thought his hat looks weird

  • I dig those hats.

  • in your face new WAVE fuckers...............way ahead of the times

  • Plenty of hot girls in the audience for those 'spud boys' to bang and they would get them,Devo are innovative.

  • i love this

  • Bob #1 is arguably the most underrated guitarist in the world. That solo at 1:46 is brilliantly subtle.

  • @agiantman agreed.

  • Sweeet They are killer live..........

  • @slashmansevern sound better live!

  • Vital and Fresh

  • devo - way ahead of the world's time

  • seriously i almost cant tell if the instruments are live or not theyve got them almost perfect to the tracks!

  • @pretentiouspigeon Definately live!

  • right when the lights came...when i saw his hat...and his glasses...

    "I LOVE him."

  • Halloween 1981 @ Radio City Music Hall NYC. One of the top 3 concerts I've seen. Also 2006 Roger Waters Birthday show @ PNC Arts Center, Kansas at the Tower Theater New Years Eve 1976.

  • Had the 45 way back then still a great song!

  • apes dont have tails. monkeys do.. apes just have an enormous ass like oprah.

  • This is an amazing tune.

  • Meanwhile: Lady Gaga.

    We must repeat.

  • 3:21

  • He even did some music from Sims 2.

  • i love how angular the opening guitar is! i love how stilted it all is. it was ahead of its time then and it's timeless now. robotic industrial feel but done by real people playing real instruments. and what a groove.

  • thanks for this.

Didn't one of them do the music for the rugrats, (dont ask me why I would know that)

  • @jimromerulez

Mark Mothersbaugh, check out all the stuff he's done the music for, it will blow your mind.

  • @Rabidazell LIke the Rugrats.

  • not bad musik..........for a bunch of mongoloid potatoes.

  • lol, she''s just a girl... (wait for last two words, realize universal truth)

  • Wow, that is an incredibly tight set for a live TV performance.

  • This is the song that my now soon to be husband said haunted him everywhere he went when we first met and he was trying to decide what to do..lol

  • I found out that I see Mark, the lead singer on my daughters favourite TV show all the time. Yoggabaggaba

  • @shuey1974 yeah me too , now i watch it with her quite alot

  • Outstanding...

  • Weird, my hex key set just spoke to me

  • I grew up to this stuff. Love it.....reunion please

  • @shuey1974 reunion? they're still together and never broke up. they have a new album out

  • Drummer is wailing on em!

  • Alan is playing the crap outta that drum kit! He kept it peppy and fast. underrated drummer. Alan, you rock!

  • @bleaufire alan is bad-ass no doubt.............like a human metronome!!!!!

  • @bleaufire He is genius! As they all are!

  • @bleaufire name me one devo member that isn't underrated....even if you worshipped their images in aztec temples, sacrifizing your mothers and teachers, bringing them gifts of plasma Televisions and candy flavoured lipgloss, while wearing the ceremonial jump suits and energy domes/plastic wigs, even then you weren't appreciating them as much as you should, devo> than the human abillity to comprehend infinity.

  • @leiposuctie DEVO IS NOT UNDERRATED THEY ARE HIGHLY ACCLAIMED.

    Effing kids.

  • @bleaufire

    Could not agree more.

  • Love Gates of Steel!

  • fkn awesome

  • The live version of this song sounds better than the album version :)

  • musical geniuses...brilliant. I am Man. I am Devo.

  • Difficult to believe that this is 30 y.o. DEVO was light years ahead of their time. Their stage movements are uncanny and fit perfectly with their music and lyrics. This is still better than 99.99% of the crap being played today.

  • @dlphcoracl Rectification : 100% of the crap, 99.99% of the good music !

  • Mark is playing the infamous 'Spud' Ibanez guitar in this video. He is interviewed in Premier guitar this month, he got it back after like 25 years. Some kid in Japan bought it and still had it!!

  • @tatsandteles

    First off, thats Bob1, Mark's brother. Second, I can't say exactly w
