  • I watched this video simply because of all the hate it was getting.

My conclusion: The dislike bar is correct.

  • Dude this is the most confusing "how to" on YouTube !

Get that camera on Craigs list and buy a calculator to take pictures !

  • I thought you can't use autofocus in video mode on a dslr? This would be useful for me in filming a wedding, e.g. walking down the aisle with a steadicam to get the bride and groom in focus, I guess I can use the autofocus face recognition mode?

  • you suck

  • MANUAL.....the whole point of using a DSLR for video...if i want AUTO i would buy a camcorder

  • lol. that was really useless... maybe change title of video?

  • I think you should read the owner's manual first; it seems to me that you had no idea how to use the AF on live view.

  • This does not really tell a useful way to use AF in video mode. It;s more like why you should not use it. It would be better to make a tutorial on how to keep your subject in focus while making a video.

  • thanks for the interesting information much appreciated.

  • Omg this is very very stupid :(

  • This guy, has no idea what he is doing.

  • NOOB lol !

  • 0:59 Seriously, how do you want it to find focus on a white wall? -_-

  • i have a CANON 60D!!!!

  • @JayShawnFilms

    me too

And I have to use it soon for a job..shooting videos....

.but it seems so complicated...I am looking for someone to tell me how to set EVERYTHING in AUTOMATIC...I mean it! dont have time to learn now.

    Help!!!

  • Show me the focus mode, or focus itself what cath the right point on white wall :)

  • I would use quick mode before I start recording.

  • @2Cool4Games quick mode rules. but there's a problem when you have to focus back and forth in the same scene.

  • Auto focusing in video mode is very noobish!

  • @AldossariEOS well technically having to press a button on the camera would not be considered "auto" to begin with....auto focus is on a camcorder....u don't have to do anything and it automatically focuses but i don't get why the AF and basic focus is so bad on these DSLR's?? Why can't they fix that already! I want the best of everything but these DSLR makers are scammers, they put one good feature in each model of DSLR and people still buy every one of them so they keep doing it!

  • @whole27 True my friend, however I'll tell you why; because video recording in DSLRs is only an extra feature, not basic or what's so called "critical". I never used a camcorder, the only thing that makes me want to record videos with 60D it's because it has 60FPS with customizable shutter speed & aperture. When I said AF in vid is very noobish, I meant for beginners who can't MF, not being a worthless feature.

  • this is the worst video ever

  • Stupid !

  • you have no clue how to use that camera, the white box on the screen is the area the camera auto-focuses and for what I saw it was aimed at a wall which the camera can't focus because there is no contrast on the wall. Use the directional pad to move the white box onto something that as contrast and see what happens :P - 60D users

  • who the hell uses auto focus to shot video, thats crazy

  • Set your dial to Movie Mode. Set the AF on your lens to on, press the AF button on the top of your Canon 60D and set the focus to Live View. Start shooting your video and press your shutter button half way down to achieve AF while shooting. It works but it's too slow to be practical.

But why bother? Shooting in manual mode is easy, quick and gives you full control. It's just a question of practice.

  • didn't really show HOW to autofocus.... More like showed how it doesnt work.... wth

  • Thanks for the video entitled "how to use autofocus in video mode" that tells me not to use autofocus in video mode. You obviously don't know how to use that nice camera, would u like to sell it?

  • DUMB

  • lol thank you for showing us how to auto focus !!

  • LOOOL this guy's a complete dumbass.. i died after the first couple seconds. There's no faces to Detect you fool hahahaha

  • In Video Mode Sony wins

  • For the AF problem I advice a Canon XA10 :D

  • maybe I am mistaken; I thought one of the main differences between some of the Nikon dslrs' video mode and this canon is that the canon (60d) DOES NOT HAVE AUTO FOCUS in video mode what so ever. I believe something weird is going on here or all the research I have been seeing is wrong. Please help????????

  • @oldschoolermx as you press the AF button during a video shoot, you engage the automatic focus. If you don't, you cannot focus on the objects you shoot. With this half automatic focus option, I think Canon is better than the Nikon models which you cannot disable the auto focusing.

  • WTF was this?

  • How NOT to use Auto Focus in Movie Mode on a Canon 60D DSLR is the better title for your movie

  • you are trying to autofucus on a plain white background, Autofocus works by detecting contrast. this vid is stupid lol

  • well this video sucked. For anyone wondering you can use the AF quick mode to use autofocus while in live view BEFORE you press record. then you can switch to manual focus and start filming. This is REALLY useful for when you are running and gunning or shooting your kids birthday party. Especially if you have a zoom lens that allows MF while in AF. you can point, get initial focus, then start recording and manually focus from then on. pretty cool trick

  • @StanGrunder This is a great tip and works but what if you're trying to zoom in and out or panning? You'd need to zoom or slide the camera while manually adjusting focus so it's pretty hard. Two hands one controlling each ring (focus & zoom) while moving if you're on a dolly/tripod/seat/walking. Any suggestion to that?

  • @soccere11 well what you have to do is keep adjusting and you will most likely have to zoom, then re focus, I use prime lenses so I dont have to worry about zoom. But as for general focus, shoot with a higher f stop number such as 16 or 9, the higher the number, the more is in focus, making your job easier. if your lens has focus marks on the top you can gauge how far away a subject is say 5 feet and focus using distance and keep relative distance. For dolly shots, you need to plan your focus

  • @StanGrunder Wow thanks for the quick answer. However, I think you misunderstood what I asked.

I purposely want to zoom in and out while keeping the subject in focus. I guess with the 60D, it's very difficult or I guess the lenses I have. I'm trying to do something like this effect here watch?v=20SuEfgzEmo at 3:44 3:46 3:51

Higher F stop number is not so great too because I'm getting a lot less light.

  • @soccere11 at 3:33 im pretty sure they person is just standing up and leaning back, not zooming, and at 3:51 that is a dolly that has been sped up in post. Most film makers dont zoom unless you are making a documentary. I would say that the shot you are trying to get just requires a tripod, some practice and you will get it. stopping down does reduce light, but it will make it easier, so just ad more light.

  • @StanGrunder Thanks for the tips! I'm still confused but agreeing on the dolly shot part. I guess it will be just a bit of practice but the guy on this video watch?v=cJ-ChSAQpIA says its the push pool or dolly zoom effect by dollying away from the subject while zooming in (or reverse for reverse effect) like at 3:00 in it

  • Not to mention it's extremely loud and ruins the audio bit for the shot.

  • People know that this is video not - photo, so nobody is using AF in Video mode..

  • How is your autofocus so quiet?

  • @clrhghs his lens probly. some lenses have a USM or ultrasonic motor that is quieter than ones that dont have it

  • Very useful, thank you

  • Well, seems like you have no idea how to focus :(

  • whats the name off the camera that you are using to film this video

btw thanks alot this was really helpfull!

  • Can you please explain why you wouldn't recommend using the AF face detection while shooting video just because the camera hunted for auto focus during your demonstration. Didn't the camera do exactly what you asked it, and it couldn't focus because no faces were detected. would it be possible for you to redo this test with a few "faces" in the scene so that the AF face detection could really be tested. I agree that nothing beats MF even for Video but I want to quiet the Nikon D7000 crowd.

  • @rkorczeniewski Ha I use this same song of this vid in the beginning good free song I keep it on my desktop. AF is a PITA on a DSLR much better on the SX20 IS but alas you lose other things.... As a reporter these things are important. So I typically try not to push the AF too hard I just got mine today and working with its limitations but it is a great rig.
